Leaky gut (more precisely called increased intestinal permeability) is when the single-cell lining of the gut with its tight junctions becomes looser, allowing microbes, toxins and undigested food particles to cross into the bloodstream and trigger immune activation and chronic inflammation. Common triggers include stress, medications, food sensitivities, dysbiosis (imbalanced gut flora), infections, low stomach acid, hormones, toxins and genetics. Symptoms can be digestive (bloating, gas, IBS) but often are non‑digestive — food intolerances, brain fog, fatigue, mood problems, skin issues, allergies, hormonal imbalances and even contributions to autoimmune disease and nutrient malabsorption (and in severe cases links to a “leaky brain”). Because presentation varies, clinicians advise testing rather than guessing: food‑sensitivity panels, SIBO breath tests (methane/hydrogen), and in selected cases endoscopy/biopsy. Management focuses on removing triggers (temporary elimination of reactive foods), correcting dysbiosis and infections, supporting gut barrier repair and then reintroducing foods when safe.
