Mental health conditions are common and can be serious: about 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience a mental illness in a 12-month period, and roughly 5% experience a severe or serious mental illness. These conditions often go beyond occasional low mood — a diagnosis usually means day-to-day functioning, relationships, school or work are meaningfully affected and, in some cases, risk to life. Among young people the burden is especially large: an estimated 17% of youth experience a mental disorder in a given year, and lifetime adolescent estimates approach 49.5%, with about 22.2% experiencing serious disorders. Trauma exists on a spectrum (including subthreshold trauma) and can sensitize the limbic system so that minor triggers generalize (for example, loud noises or voices) and repeatedly set off anxiety or reactivity. Small, accumulating stressors and patterns of social comparison can feed into negative thought spirals, worsening mood and functioning. Overall, mental health is a widespread public-health issue that impairs quality of life, relationships, and sometimes leads to self-harm, so early recognition and care are important.
