A sleep disorder is any condition that disrupts normal sleep quality, timing, or duration — common examples include insomnia, restless legs syndrome (RLS), REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), and obstructive or central sleep apnea. These problems cause daytime fatigue, mood and cognitive changes, and in conditions like Parkinson’s can worsen tremor, memory, and mood symptoms. Sleep has distinct phases (non‑REM deep/slow‑wave sleep and REM sleep), and REM in particular — which predominates in the second half of the night — is critical for emotional regulation and memory, so cutting or fragmenting sleep disproportionately harms function. Some disorders (e.g., RBD causing violent dream enactment, RLS causing difficulty falling asleep, or REM‑dominant sleep apnea) can also increase risk of injury or severely fragment sleep. Disorders frequently coexist, and treating one problem (like sleep apnea) may not fully restore sleep if others or sleep anxiety remain. If you suspect a sleep disorder, improve sleep hygiene and a consistent sleep schedule, and see a clinician or sleep specialist for evaluation (which may include polysomnography and targeted treatments).
