Preventing a Deadly Disease

It’s no secret that Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease that affects the lives and families of millions nationwide. But did you know that as of 2022 more than 6 million Americans were confirmed to have this disease? To most, a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is considered to be a life sentence, as there is currently no known cure.

That being said, recent research has shown that there are ways of reversing Alzheimer’s and prolonging the quality of life that you and your loved ones hold dearly.

Understanding Alzheimer’s

Simply put, Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that affects memory, cognition, and behavior. It is progressive and neurodegenerative in nature, meaning that in most cases the symptoms get worse over time, eventually becoming fatal.

Accounting for roughly 70% of dementia cases, Alzheimer’s disease is the most common and debilitating of memory loss conditions. This disease mostly surfaces in the late-onset variety in people over the age of 65, however, early-onset Alzheimer’s can begin as early as in a person’s 30s.

For most people, the early signs of Alzheimer’s include problems with memory and a general decline in cognitive abilities. Given that this disease is progressively degenerative, there are different symptoms for different stages. Symptoms for early stage or mild Alzheimer’s include:

  • Memory loss that disrupts daily life
  • Poor judgment, leading to bad decisions
  • Mood and personality changes
  • Increased anxiety and/or aggression

As the disease progresses to a moderate stage, symptoms include:

  • Increased confusion and memory loss, such as forgetting events or personal history
  • Difficulty with language and problems with reading, writing, and working with numbers
  • Difficulty organizing thoughts and thinking logically
  • Difficulty carrying out familiar, multistep tasks, such as getting dressed
  • Hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia
  • Repetitive statements or movement, occasional muscle twitches

Towards the end of a person’s life and experience with Alzheimer’s disease, severe symptoms include:

  • Inability to communicate
  • No awareness of recent experiences or surroundings
  • Seizures
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Loss of bowel and bladder control

There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, however, there are a number of conventional drugs and treatments available to help manage symptoms and improve one’s quality of life. Prescribed medications that help reduce/control cognitive and behavioral issues include:

  • Galantamine
  • Rivastigmine
  • Donepezil
  • Memantine

The Promise of Natural Remedies

While research is continually being done on conventional approaches to treating Alzheimer’s, holistic or natural remedies have also been growing in popularity in recent years.

Natural remedies can slow the progression of the disease, improve cognitive function and memory, and reduce symptoms, and are often more appealing than conventional medications because they are less costly and don’t carry as many side effects. Some examples of natural remedies include:

  • Diet: Increasing consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, and decreasing consumption of processed foods and sugars have been shown to help manage inflammation and improve cognitive function.
  • Exercise: Regular physical activity can help enhance mood, improve brain function, and regulate sleep, all of which are crucial to cognitive health.
  • Supplements: Supplements like omega-3 fatty acids and B-complex vitamins have been linked to improved cognitive function and reduced symptoms in Alzheimer’s patients.
  • Alternative therapies: Acupuncture, meditation, massage therapy, and herbal remedies can help reduce stress and anxiety, and boost the overall health and happiness of people with Alzheimer’s.

Research into treating and managing the symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s disease is at the forefront of the medical and holistic communities. This begs the question, can Alzheimer’s be reversed?
