It’s no secret that most people want to live as long as possible. But is life worth living if you’re unhealthy and in pain? Living as long as you can while maintaining your health is the true meaning of longevity and, as such, the medical community is beginning to shift its focus from lifespan towards the concept of healthspan. Actively working to keep your mind and body healthy for as long as possible ensures that you’ll still enjoy a quality of life worth living as you enter your later years. With this in mind, expert researchers have identified inflammation as one of the leading causes of aging and disease. What’s more, inflammaging: chronic inflammation in aging, cardiovascular disease, and frailty seems to have a direct correlation to decreased healthspans in the population. The Reverse Inflammaging Body and Mind Longevity Medicine Summit 2023 aims to address these findings and offer insights from more than 40 functional medicine experts, scientists, researchers, and doctors on how you can combat inflammaging and live a long, healthy, and disease-free life.

Inflammation and Longevity

What causes inflammaging? It’s important to understand that inflammation is not inherently negative. After an injury or infection, inflammation is the body’s natural response and short term solution for healing and recovery. Simply put, inflammation is a process in which the body:

  • Activates immune cells
  • Releases inflammatory mediators
  • Recruits blood vessels to aid at the site of an injury or infection

When inflammaging becomes chronic, however, it can lead to a multitude of health problems, as the body is not built to be in a state of perpetual inflammation. This is why inflammaging causes disease and premature aging. These health problems, all of which accelerate the aging process and affect longevity, include:

  • Cancer
  • Heart Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Ulcerative Colitis

With diseases brought on by chronic inflammation, a person’s quality of life rapidly decreases. While a person may be able to live for a long time with some of these diseases, there is a good chance they will be living in discomfort or pain. Thus, when discussing how to improve longevity, it is important to shift focus from lifespan, or how many years a person is alive, towards the concept of healthspan, which is concerned with extending the number of healthy years a person experiences as they age.

Reversing Inflammation and Mind Longevity Medicine

There is no doubt that the mind and body are interconnected. When we experience mental health issues like chronic stress, trauma, anxiety, or depression, our bodies are affected negatively as well. Expert researchers in the field have found that poor mental health can contribute to chronic inflammation and, in turn, chronic illnesses. Healing the mind/body connection is one of the first steps you must take if you want to decrease inflammation and increase your overall healthspan. There are many holistic approaches to healing the mind/body connection, including:

  • Progressive muscle relaxation
  • Mindfulness-based stress reduction
  • Meditation
  • Biofeedback
  • Yoga

Practices such as these help to strengthen psychological resistance, improve stress management, and heal trauma, all of which contribute to reducing inflammation and increasing healthy longevity.

As previously discussed, chronic inflammation is one of the primary drivers of aging and disease. Some of the main causes of chronic inflammation outside of an unhealthy mind/body connection include:

  • Exposure to toxins
  • Untreated acute (short-term) inflammation
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Obesity
  • Smoking

While it is important to partake in the aforementioned approaches to healing the mind/body connection, it is also important to make lifestyle choices that improve longevity and work to reduce inflammation. These include:

  • Drinking alcohol in moderation (no more than 1-2 drinks a day)
  • Eating anti-inflammatory foods (leafy greens, tomatoes, walnuts, blueberries, salmon)
  • Eliminating inflammatory foods (processed red meats)
  • Controlling blood sugar
  • Routinely exercising
  • Keeping your BMI in a healthy range
  • Not smoking cigarettes
