COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus disease, is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It first emerged in late 2019 and quickly developed into a global pandemic. The virus primarily spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough, fatigue, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell, and body aches. However, the severity of symptoms can vary widely, ranging from mild to severe, and some individuals may remain asymptomatic. COVID-19 can lead to complications such as pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and multi-organ failure, particularly in older adults and those with underlying health conditions.
