Clinical Pearl of the Day đ Thinking about adding berberine to your routine? Berberine has real evidence behind it for metabolic health. But in a randomized crossover study in healthy volunteers, 300 mg three times daily for two weeks reduced the activity of three major drug-metabolizing enzymes: CYP2D6, CYP2C9, and CYP3A4. Translation: berberine can change how your body clears certain medications. That matters if you take things like: Statins Metoprolol Warfarin or other blood thinners Tramadol or codeine Certain antidepressants And because berberine also lowers blood sugar on its own, stacking it with metformin or other diabetes medications can push glucose lower than you intended. None of this means berberine is off limits. It means it deserves the same review a prescription would get. This is exactly what a pharmacist-led medication and supplement review is for. Catching the interaction before it becomes a problem. đ Guo Y, et al. Eur J Clin Pharmacol. 2012;68(2):213-217. PMID: 21870106 Interested in learning more? What if the symptom youâve been trying to manage... isnât where your healing needs to begin? For pharmacist Amber, the biggest breakthrough in her rheumatoid arthritis journey didnât come from adding another medication. It came from healing her gut. She noticed a dramatic difference in her pain, swelling, brain fog, and even her lab work. That experience completely changed how she approaches patient care today. In functional medicine, we know the gut influences far more than digestion. It plays a critical role in immune function, inflammation, nutrient absorption, and overall healthâwhich is why itâs often one of the first places we investigate. If youâve been told your symptoms are âjust part of getting olderâ or youâve been managing them without getting real answers, this episode is one you wonât want to miss. đ§ Comment EPISODE59 to hear Amberâs story and learn why gut health is often a foundational step toward lasting wellness. #functionalmedicine #pharmtotable #womenshealth #rootcausehealing
What do Turkish rugs and your gut have in common? At first glance, a Turkish rug looks like one
What do Turkish rugs and your gut have in common? At first glance, a Turkish rug looks like one beautiful design. Look closer, and youâll find thousands of individual threads woven together. Remove or weaken enough of those threads, and the entire pattern begins to change. Your microbiome works much the same way. Itâs not just one type of bacteria. Itâs an ecosystem where trillions of microbes work together to support digestion, immune function, metabolism, and more. Thatâs why we donât focus on finding one âgoodâ bacteria or one perfect supplement. We focus on understanding the ecosystem as a whole and creating the conditions that help it function well. Because better gut health isnât built by one microbe. Itâs built by supporting the entire community. Comment MICROBES if youâd like to learn more about how we evaluate gut health.
More fiber
More fiber. More water. More probiotics. And somehow⌠more bloated? đŽâđ¨ Hereâs what most people donât realize: your gut isnât just digestion. Your gut bacteria help make your mood and focus chemicals (serotonin, dopamine, GABA), influence your hormones and energy, and even produce key vitamins, while inflammation at the gut wall can be the hidden root behind all of it. Our Gut Performance Report maps your gut from one simple at-home sample, and when you order your kit, I walk you through exactly what it means and what to do next, in the right order. ⨠Check out the test here https://pharmtotable.life/programs/gut-performance/ #guthealth #bloating #constipation #SIBO #functionalmedicine womenshealth
Hot flashes arenât the only thing changing during menopause
Hot flashes arenât the only thing changing during menopause. Your gut microbiome changes too. As estrogen declines, beneficial bacteria can decrease, inflammation can increase, and your gut-brain communication may become disrupted. These changes may contribute to symptoms like: â Brain fog â Bloating â Poor sleep â Mood swings â Weight changes â Digestive issues The good news? Your microbiome is something you can support through nutrition, lifestyle, and targeted interventions based on your unique needs. The probiotic aisle is not the problem
The probiotic aisle is not the problem. Most people start there because itâs the easiest thing to reach for. Take one a day, wait a few weeks, hope the bloating settles down. When it doesnât, the usual conclusion is that you picked the wrong brand, so you try another one. But strains are not interchangeable. The one that helps a friendâs digestion may do nothing for the fatigue, food reactions, or skin flares youâre dealing with, because those may be coming from something the supplement was never designed to address. Guessing gets expensive, and it costs you time you could have spent actually feeling better. Weâd rather start with information: what your symptoms are telling us, what your history looks like, how youâre actually living day to day, and functional testing when itâs warranted. Your gut is specific. Your plan should be too. Comment Performance if youâd like to learn more about our approach to gut health. #functionalmedicine #pharmtotable #womenshealth #rootcausehealing
Most people donât have a supplement problem
Most people donât have a supplement problem. They have an information problem. I have nothing against collagen, cinnamon, monk fruit, or other ingredients that can support overall health. In fact, I use many of them myself. But if youâre still struggling with bloating, food reactions, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, or brain fog despite making âhealthyâ choices, adding another powder to your routine probably isnât the missing piece. Your gut microbiome influences digestion, inflammation, immune function, hormone signaling, and even how your body responds to the foods youâre eating. Without understanding whatâs happening inside your gut, itâs difficult to know which strategies are actually right for you. Thatâs why we focus on testing before recommending another supplement or protocol. A comprehensive microbiome analysis provides insights into microbial diversity, inflammatory patterns, short-chain fatty acid production, and other markers that help us personalize your plan rather than relying on trial and error. ⨠Comment PERFORMANCE to learn more about how to find out what bugs are in your gut! #GutHealth #Microbiome #FunctionalMedicine #StoolTesting #RootCauseMedicine

Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do isnât another supplement
Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do isnât another supplement. Itâs saying hello. Building meaningful relationships isnât always easy, especially as adults. It takes courage to start a conversation, introduce yourself, or simply be open to connection. The truth is, community doesnât usually appear overnight. Itâs built through small moments: â Talking to someone while waiting for coffee. â Asking about the book theyâre reading. â Starting a conversation instead of staying in your own world. Research continues to show that strong social connections support both physical and mental health. Community isnât just nice to have. Itâs one of the foundations of long-term wellness. Making friends as an adult can feel uncomfortable⌠but connection is worth the courage
Making friends as an adult can feel uncomfortable⌠but connection is worth the courage. At some point, many of us start believing: âEveryone already has their people.â âNo one is looking for a new friend.â âItâs too awkward to put myself out there.â But the truth? There are so many people looking for the exact same thing: â A deeper conversation â A supportive community â Someone to share coffee with â A friend who understands Connection rarely happens by accident. Sometimes it looks like: â Inviting someone over for coffee â Joining a book club â Trying a new hobby â Asking a neighbor to dinner â Starting the conversation first And yes, it can feel uncomfortable. Especially if youâre naturally introverted or youâve spent years focused on caring for everyone else. But community is one of the most important foundations of health. Because we are not designed to do life alone. Your wellness journey isnât just about what you eat, how you move, or the supplements you take. Itâs also about the people who support you, encourage you, and remind you that you belong. If youâve been waiting for someone else to make the first move⌠Maybe this is your sign to send the invitation. đ đ§ Comment EPISODE60 to listen to this weekâs Table Talk episode. #functionalmedicine #pharmtotable #womenshealth #rootcausehealing
