Experts talk about how toxic mold is

There is a compound produced by mold that is so immunosuppressive, modern medicine uses a version of it to keep transplant patients alive. It's called mycophenolic acid. When mold is actively growing, it releases this compound into the air around it as a byproduct of its metabolism. That same compound forms the basis of a drug called CellCept, prescribed to organ transplant recipients for a single purpose: to suppress the immune system enough that the body will not reject a foreign organ. So when someone says mold can't make you sick, or that it doesn't affect your gut, brain, or immune system, consider this. Doctors are using a version of it on purpose to suppress the immune system of transplant patients. And of course, many of those patients end up with gut symptoms. Because yes, mold affects your gut too. In an environment with active mold growth, you are breathing it in. Not at a measured therapeutic dose, but continuously, without prescription or oversight. Over time, that kind of immune disruption is part of why so many people with mold exposure end up sick. Want to hear more of my conversation with Dr. Jill? Sleep and Detox

No matter how much sleep I get… I wake up exhausted. I hear this from people on calls every week, usually right after they tell me every lab their last doctor ran came back "normal." Exhaustion that sleep never fixes is one of the loudest signs your body is dealing with something it can't clear on its own. Sleep is not just rest. It is one of your body's main detox windows. While you're in deep sleep, your brain flushes waste through the glymphatic system and your liver and other organs do a lot of their repair and clearing work. So when something is interfering with your sleep, you lose the very process that's supposed to help your body get the junk out. Now picture what happens when that something is a toxin. Mold and mycotoxins keep your nervous system on alert and your detox pathways overloaded. You sleep less deeply, you clear less, more builds up, and the cycle tightens. That is how you end up sleeping nine hours and still waking up wrecked. Mycotoxins like Ochratoxin A and Aflatoxin G2 can do real damage. Ochratoxin A is rough on the kidneys and nervous system and tracks with chronic fatigue, brain fog, headaches, and anxiety. Aflatoxin hits the liver and immune system and can drive inflammation, nausea, and appetite changes. And if you're new here, welcome. I'm Dr. Diana, aka the Detox Doc. The Detox Doc’s Report

Your immune system can't see your environment. So it reads your gut instead. I sat down with microbiologist @kiranbiome on The Detox Doc's Report, and he broke down something most people never think about. It completely reframes how I think about gut health and environmental illness. Your immune system is one of the only systems in your body that has to adapt to wherever you are. Your immune cells are born naive. They aren't preloaded with a list of friends and threats. They have to learn it, constantly, because your surroundings keep changing. But your immune system has no forward facing sensors. Nothing on your skin scanning the air for danger. So how does it decide what to attack, what to ignore, and how seriously to react? It uses your microbiome as the translator. Your gut bacteria take in information about your environment and pass it to your immune system. That is how your immune cells get educated. So when the microbiome gets disrupted, by mold, by mycotoxins, by years of environmental exposure, the messages your immune system receives get scrambled. It starts overreacting to things it should tolerate and missing things it should flag. This is part of why I see so much immune chaos in people dealing with mold and toxins. Histamine intolerance, MCAS, and new reactions to foods, smells, and chemicals that never used to be a problem. It also explains why I never start with aggressive detox. If the gut is the translator and the translator is compromised, you support it first. Every body, every exposure, and every healing path is different, so think of this as the why, not a protocol. Comment POD and I'll send you the full episode with Kiran.
