Dr. David Lai is a physician whose career has crossed clinical medicine, humanitarian response, global public health and functional medicine. Over more than two decades, his work has taken him from individual patient care to complex humanitarian emergencies and health-system challenges, including senior work with the World Health Organization.
His experience in global health has included humanitarian medicine, emergency preparedness and response, outbreak management, public health and health-system strengthening. Working in environments where health is shaped not only by disease but by nutrition, infrastructure, displacement, environment, resilience and the interaction of multiple systems has strongly influenced the way he thinks about medicine.
Today, Dr. Lai is the founder of Tao Functional Health, where he brings that systems perspective to individual health. His work focuses on people experiencing persistent symptoms or changes in their health that may not be fully understood by looking at individual symptoms, diagnoses or laboratory results in isolation.
Rather than searching for a single hidden cause behind every health problem, he looks at how different influences may interact across time. These can include metabolic health, nutrition, sleep, physical activity, medications, previous illness, stress, digestive health, recovery, ageing and other aspects of an individual’s physiology and health history. The aim is to understand why health may have changed in that particular person and which factors deserve attention.
This thinking forms the basis of Medicine Before Symptoms, an idea that explores how physiology can begin to change long before conventional disease becomes apparent. Dr. Lai is particularly interested in functional and preventive medicine, healthy ageing, metabolic health, fatigue and energy, sleep and recovery, digestive health, biological resilience, and the interpretation of emerging health and longevity science.
Alongside his clinical and educational work, he continues to write and speak about global health, humanitarian medicine and the lessons that complex health systems can teach us about human health. His career offers an unusual perspective across two scales of medicine: understanding the health of populations and health systems, and understanding the physiology of the individual.
He is the founder of Tao Functional Health and creator of Tao Papers and Signal & Noise, a physician-led series examining the evidence behind contemporary health practices, emerging science and health claims.
