Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that colonizes the stomach lining and can cause various gastrointestinal conditions. It is a common infection, with many people harboring the bacterium without experiencing symptoms. However, H. pylori infection is associated with gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining), peptic ulcers, and an increased risk of certain stomach cancers. Infection usually occurs during childhood and may persist for many years if left untreated. Helicobacter pylori is typically diagnosed through breath, blood, or stool tests and can be treated with a combination of antibiotics and acid-reducing medications.
