Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks (Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus). Common symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, and a characteristic "bull's-eye" rash. If left untreated, Lyme disease can lead to more severe complications, affecting the joints, heart, and nervous system. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment with antibiotics are essential to prevent long-term complications. Preventive measures include wearing protective clothing in tick-prone areas, using insect repellent, and conducting thorough tick checks after spending time outdoors.
