Can You Start HRT After 60? | Dr. Valorie and Dr. Maki Explain
Can you start HRT after 60? YES.
Women still need estrogen.
There is no excuse to dismiss HRT for simply being:
• Over 60
• Several years postmenopausal
• More than 10 years past menopause
Again, there is no reason to simply dismiss HRT and send a woman away with nothing because she is over 60.
But there is an important distinction: the way we start HRT later in life matters.
In this episode, Dr. Valorie Davidson and Dr. Robert Maki talk about:
• Why being over 60 or more than 10 years postmenopausal doesn’t automatically mean you’ve “missed your chance” for HRT
• Why how long you’ve been without estrogen can influence how we start
• Why starting low and gradually increasing estradiol may reduce side effects
• How progesterone needs can differ based on your uterus, dose, form, and route
The answer shouldn’t simply be, “You’re over 60, so no HRT.”
The better question is: How do we introduce hormones appropriately for you now? That’s the conversation we’re having in this episode.
