Full Transcript Root Cause Cardiology Explained 0:02 And I feel in the ADHD of conventional 0:02 And I feel in the ADHD of conventional medicine where you have a 7 and 1/2 0:03 medicine where you have a 7 and 1/2 0:03 medicine where you have a 7 and 1/2 minute visit, medical school really just 0:05 minute visit, medical school really just 0:05 minute visit, medical school really just becomes learning a bunch of if-then 0:06 becomes learning a bunch of if-then 0:06 becomes learning a bunch of if-then statements. And I say at least with 0:07 statements. And I say at least with 0:07 statements. And I say at least with artificial intelligence, it's thinking. 0:09 artificial intelligence, it's thinking. 0:09 artificial intelligence, it's thinking. [music] How many times do you think I 0:11 [music] How many times do you think I 0:11 [music] How many times do you think I heard the word mold? Negative six would 0:13 heard the word mold? Negative six would 0:13 heard the word mold? Negative six would be an overestimate. Two to threefold 0:15 be an overestimate. Two to threefold 0:15 be an overestimate. Two to threefold higher risk of cardiovascular events, 0:17 higher risk of cardiovascular events, 0:17 higher risk of cardiovascular events, you absolutely have to look at their 0:19 you absolutely have to look at their 0:19 you absolutely have to look at their exposures. We have the knowledge how to 0:20 exposures. We have the knowledge how to 0:20 exposures. We have the knowledge how to detoxify someone. 0:22 detoxify someone. 0:22 detoxify someone. >> If you're someone who's already done the 0:23 >> If you're someone who's already done the 0:23 >> If you're someone who's already done the research, maybe tried functional 0:24 research, maybe tried functional 0:24 research, maybe tried functional medicine, a bunch of labs, a cleanse, 0:27 medicine, a bunch of labs, a cleanse, 0:27 medicine, a bunch of labs, a cleanse, different diets, and you still feel like 0:28 different diets, and you still feel like 0:28 different diets, and you still feel like something deeper is being missed, I'd 0:30 something deeper is being missed, I'd 0:30 something deeper is being missed, I'd love for you to take our Root Cause 0:31 love for you to take our Root Cause 0:31 love for you to take our Root Cause Quiz. It's a short, thoughtful 0:33 Quiz. It's a short, thoughtful 0:33 Quiz. It's a short, thoughtful assessment designed to help you see 0:35 assessment designed to help you see 0:35 assessment designed to help you see patterns that might not have been 0:36 patterns that might not have been 0:36 patterns that might not have been detected yet. Things like hidden toxin 0:38 detected yet. Things like hidden toxin 0:38 detected yet. Things like hidden toxin exposure or nervous system overload or 0:40 exposure or nervous system overload or 0:40 exposure or nervous system overload or gut disruption or mold exposure, past or 0:43 gut disruption or mold exposure, past or 0:43 gut disruption or mold exposure, past or present. It's completely free and it 0:45 present. It's completely free and it 0:45 present. It's completely free and it takes just a few minutes. You'll find 0:46 takes just a few minutes. You'll find 0:46 takes just a few minutes. You'll find the link in the description below. Take 0:48 the link in the description below. Take 0:48 the link in the description below. Take it and see what shows up and let's start 0:50 it and see what shows up and let's start 0:50 it and see what shows up and let's start making sense of what your body's been 0:51 making sense of what your body's been 0:51 making sense of what your body's been trying to tell you. So many times your 0:53 trying to tell you. So many times your 0:53 trying to tell you. So many times your body's not making a mistake, it's trying 0:55 body's not making a mistake, it's trying 0:55 body's not making a mistake, it's trying to share with you, "Hey, I'm doing the 0:56 to share with you, "Hey, I'm doing the 0:56 to share with you, "Hey, I'm doing the best I can under all of these stressors 0:59 best I can under all of these stressors 0:59 best I can under all of these stressors that I've been put under." And it all 1:00 that I've been put under." And it all 1:00 that I've been put under." And it all makes logical sense once you can connect 1:02 makes logical sense once you can connect 1:02 makes logical sense once you can connect the dots. Welcome, Dr. Sanjay. It's so 1:04 the dots. Welcome, Dr. Sanjay. It's so 1:04 the dots. Welcome, Dr. Sanjay. It's so great to have you here. Sakara, thank 1:06 great to have you here. Sakara, thank 1:06 great to have you here. Sakara, thank you so much for having me. I'm so 1:07 you so much for having me. I'm so 1:07 you so much for having me. I'm so excited about our conversation today. 1:08 excited about our conversation today. 1:08 excited about our conversation today. You do a really deep dive into not just, 1:12 You do a really deep dive into not just, 1:12 You do a really deep dive into not just, "Okay, you have heart disease, here's 1:13 "Okay, you have heart disease, here's 1:13 "Okay, you have heart disease, here's something to throw at it." But you 1:14 something to throw at it." But you 1:14 something to throw at it." But you really have a root cause approach to 1:16 really have a root cause approach to 1:16 really have a root cause approach to what are the factors behind heart 1:18 what are the factors behind heart 1:18 what are the factors behind heart disease. Can you speak to that? 1:19 disease. Can you speak to that? 1:19 disease. Can you speak to that? Absolutely. So, cardiology for years has 1:22 Absolutely. So, cardiology for years has 1:22 Absolutely. So, cardiology for years has been really successful in helping reduce 1:26 been really successful in helping reduce 1:26 been really successful in helping reduce heart attack risk, keeping people alive. 1:28 heart attack risk, keeping people alive. 1:28 heart attack risk, keeping people alive. But I think we've been right for a lot 1:30 But I think we've been right for a lot 1:30 But I think we've been right for a lot of the wrong reasons. And as you look at 1:32 of the wrong reasons. And as you look at 1:32 of the wrong reasons. And as you look at cardiovascular medicine, you know, we're 1:34 cardiovascular medicine, you know, we're 1:34 cardiovascular medicine, you know, we're bringing blood pressure down, we're 1:35 bringing blood pressure down, we're 1:35 bringing blood pressure down, we're bringing LDL cholesterol down, we're 1:38 bringing LDL cholesterol down, we're 1:38 bringing LDL cholesterol down, we're getting people on all these medications. 1:40 getting people on all these medications. 1:40 getting people on all these medications. So, we're treating the consequence of a 1:43 So, we're treating the consequence of a 1:44 So, we're treating the consequence of a root cause issue, but not the root cause 1:45 root cause issue, but not the root cause 1:45 root cause issue, but not the root cause itself. And as we think about root cause 1:48 itself. And as we think about root cause 1:48 itself. And as we think about root cause cardiology, it's a lot of the same 1:51 cardiology, it's a lot of the same 1:51 cardiology, it's a lot of the same things that we see in root cause 1:53 things that we see in root cause 1:53 things that we see in root cause disruption of almost any organ system. 1:55 disruption of almost any organ system. 1:55 disruption of almost any organ system. It's the toxicities and the exposures 1:57 It's the toxicities and the exposures 1:57 It's the toxicities and the exposures that we have. It's the stress, the lack 2:00 that we have. It's the stress, the lack 2:00 that we have. It's the stress, the lack of sleep, our diets leading to our body 2:03 of sleep, our diets leading to our body 2:03 of sleep, our diets leading to our body really getting out of balance, and our 2:07 really getting out of balance, and our 2:07 really getting out of balance, and our our systems don't know what to do. Um 2:09 our systems don't know what to do. Um 2:09 our systems don't know what to do. Um so, oxidative stress is a huge thing 2:12 so, oxidative stress is a huge thing 2:12 so, oxidative stress is a huge thing that I contend with in my functional 2:14 that I contend with in my functional 2:14 that I contend with in my functional cardiology practice. Yeah, I'm thinking 2:16 cardiology practice. Yeah, I'm thinking 2:16 cardiology practice. Yeah, I'm thinking about my own heart issue story. And this 2:18 about my own heart issue story. And this 2:18 about my own heart issue story. And this is how I ended up in the hospital. I 2:19 is how I ended up in the hospital. I 2:19 is how I ended up in the hospital. I thought I was having a heart attack. 2:20 thought I was having a heart attack. 2:20 thought I was having a heart attack. Uh-oh. And I didn't have medical 2:22 Uh-oh. And I didn't have medical 2:22 Uh-oh. And I didn't have medical insurance, so I went to an urgent care 2:23 insurance, so I went to an urgent care 2:23 insurance, so I went to an urgent care and they said, "Yeah, you got to go to 2:25 and they said, "Yeah, you got to go to 2:25 and they said, "Yeah, you got to go to the ER right now." Really scared me. And 2:28 the ER right now." Really scared me. And 2:28 the ER right now." Really scared me. And of course, um come to find out the EKG 2:31 of course, um come to find out the EKG 2:31 of course, um come to find out the EKG fine. They couldn't find anything wrong 2:33 fine. They couldn't find anything wrong 2:33 fine. They couldn't find anything wrong with me even though I felt like I was 2:35 with me even though I felt like I was 2:35 with me even though I felt like I was dying. 2:37 dying. 2:37 dying. And it wouldn't stop. Um they put me 2:39 And it wouldn't stop. Um they put me 2:39 And it wouldn't stop. Um they put me through the MRIs, the cat scans, there's 2:40 through the MRIs, the cat scans, there's 2:40 through the MRIs, the cat scans, there's nothing to cut. And so, out, you know, 2:42 nothing to cut. And so, out, you know, 2:42 nothing to cut. And so, out, you know, so they just went from being very 2:44 so they just went from being very 2:44 so they just went from being very interested in me, the hospitalists were 2:46 interested in me, the hospitalists were 2:46 interested in me, the hospitalists were like, "Oh, we have a live one. Let's 2:47 like, "Oh, we have a live one. Let's 2:47 like, "Oh, we have a live one. Let's figure this case out." To, "Why are you 2:49 figure this case out." To, "Why are you 2:49 figure this case out." To, "Why are you still asking me questions? I don't want 2:51 still asking me questions? I don't want 2:51 still asking me questions? I don't want to stop by your room." And actually 2:53 to stop by your room." And actually 2:53 to stop by your room." And actually walked out of that hospital without even 2:55 walked out of that hospital without even 2:55 walked out of that hospital without even checking myself out because I was so 2:57 checking myself out because I was so 2:57 checking myself out because I was so sure that I was going home to die. I 2:59 sure that I was going home to die. I 2:59 sure that I was going home to die. I didn't even fill out the paperwork. So, 3:01 didn't even fill out the paperwork. So, 3:01 didn't even fill out the paperwork. So, cuz when there's no way to pay the bill, 3:03 cuz when there's no way to pay the bill, 3:03 cuz when there's no way to pay the bill, too, I was really sure I was going to be 3:04 too, I was really sure I was going to be 3:04 too, I was really sure I was going to be dead by then. 3:05 dead by then. 3:05 dead by then. And you know, come to find out years 3:07 And you know, come to find out years 3:07 And you know, come to find out years later in the process of trying to 3:08 later in the process of trying to 3:09 later in the process of trying to resolve my illness issues, um 3:11 resolve my illness issues, um 3:11 resolve my illness issues, um that, "Oh, okay, mold can be a huge 3:12 that, "Oh, okay, mold can be a huge 3:12 that, "Oh, okay, mold can be a huge driver of cardiovascular stress." And 3:15 driver of cardiovascular stress." And 3:15 driver of cardiovascular stress." And that tachycardia and those signs and 3:17 that tachycardia and those signs and 3:17 that tachycardia and those signs and signals that my nervous system was 3:19 signals that my nervous system was 3:19 signals that my nervous system was completely shutting down could have 3:21 completely shutting down could have 3:21 completely shutting down could have actually driven solely by mold. Yeah, I
Mold Exposure And Heart Health 3:24 actually driven solely by mold. Yeah, I 3:24 actually driven solely by mold. Yeah, I mean, when we think about the 3:25 mean, when we think about the 3:25 mean, when we think about the traditional cardiovascular risk factors, 3:27 traditional cardiovascular risk factors, 3:27 traditional cardiovascular risk factors, things like age, family history, 3:29 things like age, family history, 3:29 things like age, family history, smoking, diet, in the in the 3:32 smoking, diet, in the in the 3:32 smoking, diet, in the in the conventional model of cardiology, we 3:34 conventional model of cardiology, we 3:34 conventional model of cardiology, we don't think outside of those five or six 3:36 don't think outside of those five or six 3:36 don't think outside of those five or six risk factors. I I mean, I did, you know, 3:39 risk factors. I I mean, I did, you know, 3:39 risk factors. I I mean, I did, you know, three years of internal medicine 3:40 three years of internal medicine 3:40 three years of internal medicine training, three of cardiology, one of 3:42 training, three of cardiology, one of 3:42 training, three of cardiology, one of general cardiology, one of 3:43 general cardiology, one of 3:43 general cardiology, one of interventional cardiology. And in those 3:45 interventional cardiology. And in those 3:45 interventional cardiology. And in those four years of cardiology, how many times 3:47 four years of cardiology, how many times 3:47 four years of cardiology, how many times do you think I heard the word mold? 3:49 do you think I heard the word mold? 3:49 do you think I heard the word mold? Negative six would be an overestimate 3:51 Negative six would be an overestimate 3:51 Negative six would be an overestimate how often I heard that. So, we really 3:54 how often I heard that. So, we really 3:54 how often I heard that. So, we really aren't trained to think of these 3:57 aren't trained to think of these 3:57 aren't trained to think of these quote-unquote zebras, as we say in 3:59 quote-unquote zebras, as we say in 3:59 quote-unquote zebras, as we say in medicine, because the by and large 4:02 medicine, because the by and large 4:02 medicine, because the by and large things that we're dealing with are heart 4:04 things that we're dealing with are heart 4:04 things that we're dealing with are heart attack from diet or essential, what we 4:06 attack from diet or essential, what we 4:06 attack from diet or essential, what we call essential hypertension, which I 4:07 call essential hypertension, which I 4:07 call essential hypertension, which I don't think is really essential. But but 4:09 don't think is really essential. But but 4:09 don't think is really essential. But but just the things that we have therapies 4:12 just the things that we have therapies 4:12 just the things that we have therapies for, right? It's like don't ask a 4:13 for, right? It's like don't ask a 4:13 for, right? It's like don't ask a question you don't have an answer to. 4:15 question you don't have an answer to. 4:15 question you don't have an answer to. When someone does come in and doesn't 4:17 When someone does come in and doesn't 4:17 When someone does come in and doesn't fit that mold, so to speak, right? 4:19 fit that mold, so to speak, right? 4:19 fit that mold, so to speak, right? Doesn't fit the traditional framework, 4:21 Doesn't fit the traditional framework, 4:21 Doesn't fit the traditional framework, and maybe it's a mold issue or it's an 4:22 and maybe it's a mold issue or it's an 4:22 and maybe it's a mold issue or it's an environmental exposure issue, 4:25 environmental exposure issue, 4:25 environmental exposure issue, we don't know in our conventional 4:27 we don't know in our conventional 4:27 we don't know in our conventional training how to address that. So, these 4:30 training how to address that. So, these 4:30 training how to address that. So, these these patients, these people become I 4:32 these patients, these people become I 4:32 these patients, these people become I call them patient nomads, medical 4:33 call them patient nomads, medical 4:34 call them patient nomads, medical nomads. They go from here to there 4:35 nomads. They go from here to there 4:35 nomads. They go from here to there searching for answers, never finding any 4:37 searching for answers, never finding any 4:37 searching for answers, never finding any one person who can say, "Oh yeah, tell 4:39 one person who can say, "Oh yeah, tell 4:39 one person who can say, "Oh yeah, tell me about where you grew up." You know, 4:41 me about where you grew up." You know, 4:41 me about where you grew up." You know, "Oh, you're from Florida." This happened 4:42 "Oh, you're from Florida." This happened 4:42 "Oh, you're from Florida." This happened to me the other day. I had a patient and 4:44 to me the other day. I had a patient and 4:44 to me the other day. I had a patient and she was saying, "Ever since I was 17, 4:48 she was saying, "Ever since I was 17, 4:48 she was saying, "Ever since I was 17, I've just felt off. My my periods were 4:51 I've just felt off. My my periods were 4:51 I've just felt off. My my periods were abnormal, I get these weird headaches, I 4:53 abnormal, I get these weird headaches, I 4:53 abnormal, I get these weird headaches, I have these recurrent sinusitis episodes, 4:55 have these recurrent sinusitis episodes, 4:55 have these recurrent sinusitis episodes, this, that, and the other." And I was 4:57 this, that, and the other." And I was 4:57 this, that, and the other." And I was like, "17, huh? Interesting. You know, 4:59 like, "17, huh? Interesting. You know, 4:59 like, "17, huh? Interesting. You know, that was your junior to senior year and 5:00 that was your junior to senior year and 5:00 that was your junior to senior year and I have my kids are in that space right 5:02 I have my kids are in that space right 5:02 I have my kids are in that space right now and I can't imagine them feeling so 5:04 now and I can't imagine them feeling so 5:04 now and I can't imagine them feeling so poor for such a long time." I said, 5:05 poor for such a long time." I said, 5:05 poor for such a long time." I said, "Tell me about the house you grew up 5:06 "Tell me about the house you grew up 5:06 "Tell me about the house you grew up in." "Oh, well, that was the year we 5:08 in." "Oh, well, that was the year we 5:08 in." "Oh, well, that was the year we moved from Texas to Florida." Oof. And 5:11 moved from Texas to Florida." Oof. And 5:11 moved from Texas to Florida." Oof. And was it humid in where you lived? "Oh 5:13 was it humid in where you lived? "Oh 5:13 was it humid in where you lived? "Oh yeah, it was super super humid. You 5:15 yeah, it was super super humid. You 5:15 yeah, it was super super humid. You know, my hair would poof out." All these 5:16 know, my hair would poof out." All these 5:16 know, my hair would poof out." All these things. And I said, "You know what? 5:17 things. And I said, "You know what? 5:17 things. And I said, "You know what? You've probably been dealing with 5:18 You've probably been dealing with 5:18 You've probably been dealing with chronic mold for so long or at least 5:21 chronic mold for so long or at least 5:21 chronic mold for so long or at least some exposure to mold that nobody ever 5:24 some exposure to mold that nobody ever 5:24 some exposure to mold that nobody ever addressed." And I think of her, she's 5:26 addressed." And I think of her, she's 5:26 addressed." And I think of her, she's now in her early 50s, for 25 years, 5:29 now in her early 50s, for 25 years, 5:30 now in her early 50s, for 25 years, their I mean, the the quote-unquote best 5:31 their I mean, the the quote-unquote best 5:31 their I mean, the the quote-unquote best years of her life, she's been suffering 5:33 years of her life, she's been suffering 5:34 years of her life, she's been suffering with these issues that nobody thought to 5:36 with these issues that nobody thought to 5:36 with these issues that nobody thought to address because they never even knew how 5:37 address because they never even knew how 5:37 address because they never even knew how to how to ask the right question. And 5:40 to how to ask the right question. And 5:40 to how to ask the right question. And she happens to be a mom on one of my 5:41 she happens to be a mom on one of my 5:41 she happens to be a mom on one of my kids' sports teams and she said, "Hey, 5:43 kids' sports teams and she said, "Hey, 5:43 kids' sports teams and she said, "Hey, you're a functional doctor now, right? 5:45 you're a functional doctor now, right? 5:45 you're a functional doctor now, right? Like, can I just can I just, you know, 5:47 Like, can I just can I just, you know, 5:47 Like, can I just can I just, you know, ask you about this?" And it's tragic to 5:49 ask you about this?" And it's tragic to 5:49 ask you about this?" And it's tragic to see how many people are unserved by our 5:53 see how many people are unserved by our 5:53 see how many people are unserved by our conventional system that are just forced 5:56 conventional system that are just forced 5:56 conventional system that are just forced to suffer because 5:58 to suffer because 5:58 to suffer because the the conventional wisdom or the 6:00 the the conventional wisdom or the 6:00 the the conventional wisdom or the conventional teaching just doesn't teach 6:01 conventional teaching just doesn't teach 6:01 conventional teaching just doesn't teach you even the right questions to ask.
What Functional Cardiology Still Misses 6:03 you even the right questions to ask. 6:03 you even the right questions to ask. >> So, I have to ask because of that. Like, 6:04 >> So, I have to ask because of that. Like, 6:04 >> So, I have to ask because of that. Like, you're you're have a functional medicine 6:05 you're you're have a functional medicine 6:06 you're you're have a functional medicine approach and you do much more in-depth 6:07 approach and you do much more in-depth 6:07 approach and you do much more in-depth testing than most cardiologists. What is 6:09 testing than most cardiologists. What is 6:09 testing than most cardiologists. What is still getting missed in the functional 6:12 still getting missed in the functional 6:12 still getting missed in the functional cardiology space that you wish more of 6:14 cardiology space that you wish more of 6:14 cardiology space that you wish more of your colleagues understood? Yeah, I 6:16 your colleagues understood? Yeah, I 6:16 your colleagues understood? Yeah, I think cholesterol is a part of the 6:18 think cholesterol is a part of the 6:18 think cholesterol is a part of the equation, but it's not the entire 6:20 equation, but it's not the entire 6:20 equation, but it's not the entire equation, right? It's just one term in 6:22 equation, right? It's just one term in 6:22 equation, right? It's just one term in the equation, so to speak. Uh you have 6:24 the equation, so to speak. Uh you have 6:24 the equation, so to speak. Uh you have to look at people's lifestyle, their 6:27 to look at people's lifestyle, their 6:27 to look at people's lifestyle, their stress level, the sleep that they're 6:28 stress level, the sleep that they're 6:28 stress level, the sleep that they're getting. You absolutely have to look at 6:30 getting. You absolutely have to look at 6:30 getting. You absolutely have to look at their exposome, look at their exposures. 6:32 their exposome, look at their exposures. 6:32 their exposome, look at their exposures. I mean, we have literature in the 6:35 I mean, we have literature in the 6:35 I mean, we have literature in the cardiology space that that documents 6:37 cardiology space that that documents 6:37 cardiology space that that documents this. There's a landmark trial from I 6:40 this. There's a landmark trial from I 6:40 this. There's a landmark trial from I think it was Circulation a few years 6:41 think it was Circulation a few years 6:41 think it was Circulation a few years ago, which is one of our big journals, 6:43 ago, which is one of our big journals, 6:43 ago, which is one of our big journals, that said people who live within 50 m of 6:46 that said people who live within 50 m of 6:46 that said people who live within 50 m of a highway, like a major interstate, are 6:48 a highway, like a major interstate, are 6:48 a highway, like a major interstate, are at a two- to threefold higher risk of 6:50 at a two- to threefold higher risk of 6:50 at a two- to threefold higher risk of cardiovascular events because of the 6:52 cardiovascular events because of the 6:52 cardiovascular events because of the particulates in the air. There is a 6:55 particulates in the air. There is a 6:55 particulates in the air. There is a little known journal called the New 6:57 little known journal called the New 6:57 little known journal called the New England Journal of Medicine that ran a 6:58 England Journal of Medicine that ran a 6:58 England Journal of Medicine that ran a review article on 7:00 review article on 7:00 review article on environmental factors and heart disease. 7:03 environmental factors and heart disease. 7:03 environmental factors and heart disease. And it's a fantastic article, but as I 7:05 And it's a fantastic article, but as I 7:05 And it's a fantastic article, but as I go to cardiology conferences, nobody is 7:07 go to cardiology conferences, nobody is 7:07 go to cardiology conferences, nobody is ever talking about it. Why? Because I 7:09 ever talking about it. Why? Because I 7:09 ever talking about it. Why? Because I think there's just not an understanding 7:11 think there's just not an understanding 7:11 think there's just not an understanding of, what do we do, right? What do we 7:13 of, what do we do, right? What do we 7:13 of, what do we do, right? What do we what do we do with this? And that's 7:15 what do we do with this? And that's 7:15 what do we do with this? And that's where the functional model is so 7:16 where the functional model is so 7:16 where the functional model is so important because we have that. We have 7:18 important because we have that. We have 7:18 important because we have that. We have the knowledge how to detoxify someone. 7:20 the knowledge how to detoxify someone. 7:20 the knowledge how to detoxify someone. Lead, cadmium, you know, we we know how 7:22 Lead, cadmium, you know, we we know how 7:22 Lead, cadmium, you know, we we know how to get some of that stuff out. If 7:23 to get some of that stuff out. If 7:24 to get some of that stuff out. If there's mold exposure, we know number 7:25 there's mold exposure, we know number 7:25 there's mold exposure, we know number one how to test for it, what are the 7:26 one how to test for it, what are the 7:26 one how to test for it, what are the most common offenders, and then what can 7:28 most common offenders, and then what can 7:28 most common offenders, and then what can you do to support to support someone's 7:30 you do to support to support someone's 7:30 you do to support to support someone's own detox so their body can can heal. Um 7:33 own detox so their body can can heal. Um 7:33 own detox so their body can can heal. Um and that's just, 7:35 and that's just, 7:35 and that's just, you know, it's it's it's difficult, 7:36 you know, it's it's it's difficult, 7:36 you know, it's it's it's difficult, right? It's not something that's easy. 7:38 right? It's not something that's easy. 7:38 right? It's not something that's easy. It's not like I can say take 10 days of 7:40 It's not like I can say take 10 days of 7:40 It's not like I can say take 10 days of this and and you'll feel better. I mean, 7:41 this and and you'll feel better. I mean, 7:41 this and and you'll feel better. I mean, these things take time. And I feel in 7:44 these things take time. And I feel in 7:44 these things take time. And I feel in the ADHD of conventional medicine where 7:46 the ADHD of conventional medicine where 7:46 the ADHD of conventional medicine where you have a 7 and 1/2 minute visit with a 7:48 you have a 7 and 1/2 minute visit with a 7:48 you have a 7 and 1/2 minute visit with a doctor once every 6 months and the 7:50 doctor once every 6 months and the 7:50 doctor once every 6 months and the patients on average are getting 7:51 patients on average are getting 7:51 patients on average are getting interrupted what, 7.2 seconds into their 7:54 interrupted what, 7.2 seconds into their 7:54 interrupted what, 7.2 seconds into their visit by the practitioner, we just don't 7:57 visit by the practitioner, we just don't 7:57 visit by the practitioner, we just don't have the the long-term approach and the 7:59 have the the long-term approach and the 8:00 have the the long-term approach and the long-term thought to what can I do to 8:02 long-term thought to what can I do to 8:02 long-term thought to what can I do to really not just treat this patient 8:04 really not just treat this patient 8:04 really not just treat this patient today, but heal this patient over a long 8:06 today, but heal this patient over a long 8:06 today, but heal this patient over a long term. And that's that's that mindset 8:08 term. And that's that's that mindset 8:08 term. And that's that's that mindset shift that we need to see not just in 8:10 shift that we need to see not just in 8:10 shift that we need to see not just in cardiology, certainly, but I think in 8:11 cardiology, certainly, but I think in 8:11 cardiology, certainly, but I think in all of medicine. You're watching the 8:12 all of medicine. You're watching the 8:13 all of medicine. You're watching the Detox Nation podcast. Firstly, thank you 8:14 Detox Nation podcast. So, this is our body 8:31 patients need most. So, this is our body 8:31 patients need most. So, this is our body of work. It's not a one-off and it means 8:32 of work. It's not a one-off and it means 8:32 of work. Thank you so much for being an essential part of it. We 8:44 for being an essential part of it. We 8:44 for being an essential part of it. We love supporting you. When I look at that
The Impact of Exposures 8:45 love supporting you. When I look at that 8:45 love supporting you. When I look at that and the exposures and how they have 8:47 and the exposures and how they have 8:47 and the exposures and how they have increased over the last couple of 8:49 increased over the last couple of 8:49 increased over the last couple of decades, you know, when you add things 8:50 decades, you know, when you add things 8:50 decades, you know, when you add things in like glyphosate, you're really 8:52 in like glyphosate, you're really 8:52 in like glyphosate, you're really destroying the gut's ability to absorb 8:54 destroying the gut's ability to absorb 8:54 destroying the gut's ability to absorb its own nutrients and you're creating 8:56 its own nutrients and you're creating 8:56 its own nutrients and you're creating leaky gut on contact with that 8:58 leaky gut on contact with that 8:58 leaky gut on contact with that glyphosate even in micro amounts. So, 9:01 glyphosate even in micro amounts. So, 9:01 glyphosate even in micro amounts. So, then you're almost requiring an immune 9:03 then you're almost requiring an immune 9:03 then you're almost requiring an immune response because things are getting out 9:05 response because things are getting out 9:05 response because things are getting out into the bloodstream that never should 9:06 into the bloodstream that never should 9:06 into the bloodstream that never should have been there. Leaky gut, you just 9:08 have been there. Leaky gut, you just 9:08 have been there. Leaky gut, you just said it. Goes into the bloodstream and 9:10 said it. Goes into the bloodstream and 9:10 said it. Goes into the bloodstream and leads to leaky vessel, right? So, now 9:12 leads to leaky vessel, right? So, now 9:12 leads to leaky vessel, right? So, now we're starting to talk about damaging 9:14 we're starting to talk about damaging 9:14 we're starting to talk about damaging the inner lining of the blood vessels, 9:15 the inner lining of the blood vessels, 9:15 the inner lining of the blood vessels, the glycocalyx, the endothelium. And 9:17 the glycocalyx, the endothelium. And 9:17 the glycocalyx, the endothelium. And what happens when that gets disrupted? 9:19 what happens when that gets disrupted? 9:19 what happens when that gets disrupted? Well, your body says something is 9:21 Well, your body says something is 9:21 Well, your body says something is happening that's not supposed to happen. 9:23 happening that's not supposed to happen. 9:23 happening that's not supposed to happen. I'm going to start attacking things like 9:24 I'm going to start attacking things like 9:24 I'm going to start attacking things like LDL. I'm going to start doing things 9:27 LDL. I'm going to start doing things 9:27 LDL. I'm going to start doing things like bringing this in, creating plaques, 9:29 like bringing this in, creating plaques, 9:29 like bringing this in, creating plaques, and putting calcium around them to to 9:31 and putting calcium around them to to 9:31 and putting calcium around them to to block them from going anywhere. And 9:32 block them from going anywhere. And 9:32 block them from going anywhere. And that's that's the intrinsic link in the 9:35 that's that's the intrinsic link in the 9:35 that's that's the intrinsic link in the knee bone to thigh bone to hip bone kind 9:36 knee bone to thigh bone to hip bone kind 9:37 knee bone to thigh bone to hip bone kind of connection that you see with with my 9:40 of connection that you see with with my 9:40 of connection that you see with with my with what I see now in cardiology in in 9:41 with what I see now in cardiology in in 9:41 with what I see now in cardiology in in the functional space is you can't heal 9:44 the functional space is you can't heal 9:44 the functional space is you can't heal the vessels until you've healed the gut, 9:45 the vessels until you've healed the gut, 9:45 the vessels until you've healed the gut, right? And you have to look at diet. And 9:47 right? And you have to look at diet. And 9:47 right? And you have to look at diet. And you can't And and even at that, you 9:49 you can't And and even at that, you 9:49 you can't And and even at that, you mentioned the foods that we're eating, 9:50 mentioned the foods that we're eating, 9:50 mentioned the foods that we're eating, the the orange of today is so different 9:53 the the orange of today is so different 9:53 the the orange of today is so different than the orange that I grew up with, 9:55 than the orange that I grew up with, 9:55 than the orange that I grew up with, right? In terms of nutrient density, but 9:56 right? In terms of nutrient density, but 9:56 right? In terms of nutrient density, but also in terms of the pesticides, right? 9:59 also in terms of the pesticides, right? 9:59 also in terms of the pesticides, right? And the and the and the chemicals that 10:01 And the and the and the chemicals that 10:01 And the and the and the chemicals that are used to grow our food, not only just 10:02 are used to grow our food, not only just 10:03 are used to grow our food, not only just leaching the microbiome of the soil, 10:05 leaching the microbiome of the soil, 10:05 leaching the microbiome of the soil, making it more difficult for vitamins to 10:06 making it more difficult for vitamins to 10:06 making it more difficult for vitamins to get fixed and heavy metals to become 10:08 get fixed and heavy metals to become 10:08 get fixed and heavy metals to become bioavailable, that also then comes into 10:10 bioavailable, that also then comes into 10:10 bioavailable, that also then comes into us and and feeds or destroys our own 10:12 us and and feeds or destroys our own 10:13 us and and feeds or destroys our own microbiome and you get really you can 10:15 microbiome and you get really you can 10:15 microbiome and you get really you can get major dysbiosis, right? Major 10:17 get major dysbiosis, right? Major 10:17 get major dysbiosis, right? Major abnormalities of the microbiome that 10:19 abnormalities of the microbiome that 10:19 abnormalities of the microbiome that have health consequences. But then even 10:21 have health consequences. But then even 10:21 have health consequences. But then even these micro shifts in the microbiome, 10:24 these micro shifts in the microbiome, 10:24 these micro shifts in the microbiome, you know, losing one or two different 10:25 you know, losing one or two different 10:25 you know, losing one or two different species here and there has to have an 10:28 species here and there has to have an 10:28 species here and there has to have an effect. Nothing happens by accident in 10:29 effect. Nothing happens by accident in 10:29 effect. Nothing happens by accident in nature. And we have a robust microbiome 10:32 nature. And we have a robust microbiome 10:32 nature. And we have a robust microbiome for a reason. Why? Because we need all 10:34 for a reason. Why? Because we need all 10:34 for a reason. Why? Because we need all of it. And the thing that fascinates me 10:36 of it. And the thing that fascinates me 10:36 of it. And the thing that fascinates me is we're we're born from a sterile 10:37 is we're we're born from a sterile 10:37 is we're we're born from a sterile environment, right? Mom's wombs are 10:39 environment, right? Mom's wombs are 10:39 environment, right? Mom's wombs are sterile. Somehow all these bacteria get 10:41 sterile. Somehow all these bacteria get 10:41 sterile. Somehow all these bacteria get into our system. Right? They're supposed 10:44 into our system. Right? They're supposed 10:44 into our system. Right? They're supposed to be there. Right? And all these things 10:46 to be there. Right? And all these things 10:46 to be there. Right? And all these things that we're doing in terms of our 10:47 that we're doing in terms of our 10:47 that we're doing in terms of our lifestyle, stress, sleep, you know, that 10:49 lifestyle, stress, sleep, you know, that 10:49 lifestyle, stress, sleep, you know, that is not just something as as, you know, 10:51 is not just something as as, you know, 10:51 is not just something as as, you know, obvious as the the chemicals in our 10:54 obvious as the the chemicals in our 10:54 obvious as the the chemicals in our food, but stressing out, right? Blue 10:57 food, but stressing out, right? Blue 10:57 food, but stressing out, right? Blue light devices, that stress affects the 10:59 light devices, that stress affects the 10:59 light devices, that stress affects the composition of our microbiome and 11:01 composition of our microbiome and 11:01 composition of our microbiome and therefore our cardiovascular health, our 11:03 therefore our cardiovascular health, our 11:03 therefore our cardiovascular health, our brain health. Yeah, I think about how
The Stress Pandemic 11:04 brain health. Yeah, I think about how 11:04 brain health. Yeah, I think about how the nervous system is responding to the 11:06 the nervous system is responding to the 11:06 the nervous system is responding to the world around us today. And as soon as 11:08 world around us today. And as soon as 11:08 world around us today. And as soon as you start to go into a stress response, 11:10 you start to go into a stress response, 11:10 you start to go into a stress response, of course your body will for the short 11:11 of course your body will for the short 11:11 of course your body will for the short term down regulate digestion, drainage, 11:15 term down regulate digestion, drainage, 11:15 term down regulate digestion, drainage, detox, repair 11:16 detox, repair 11:16 detox, repair and send all of your resources into 11:18 and send all of your resources into 11:18 and send all of your resources into meeting life's challenge in the moment 11:20 meeting life's challenge in the moment 11:20 meeting life's challenge in the moment right then. But if you're always 11:21 right then. But if you're always 11:21 right then. But if you're always stressed, either by the toxicants coming 11:23 stressed, either by the toxicants coming 11:23 stressed, either by the toxicants coming in from your environment through your 11:24 in from your environment through your 11:24 in from your environment through your food, air, and water and your skin or 11:26 food, air, and water and your skin or 11:26 food, air, and water and your skin or through the screen and whatever the 11:28 through the screen and whatever the 11:28 through the screen and whatever the stressful news is that you're watching, 11:30 stressful news is that you're watching, 11:30 stressful news is that you're watching, you feel out of control, feel like your 11:32 you feel out of control, feel like your 11:32 you feel out of control, feel like your world around you is unsafe, of course 11:34 world around you is unsafe, of course 11:34 world around you is unsafe, of course that's going to have a physiological 11:35 that's going to have a physiological 11:35 that's going to have a physiological response. 11:37 response. 11:37 response. Right? And then your body's not going to 11:38 Right? And then your body's not going to 11:38 Right? And then your body's not going to be in a position to keep up with just 11:40 be in a position to keep up with just 11:40 be in a position to keep up with just the daily wear and tear and the needs of 11:42 the daily wear and tear and the needs of 11:42 the daily wear and tear and the needs of your digestive tract, of course it's 11:44 your digestive tract, of course it's 11:44 your digestive tract, of course it's going to add up and all compound. And 11:45 going to add up and all compound. And 11:45 going to add up and all compound. And then we have a loss of resilience, 11:47 then we have a loss of resilience, 11:47 then we have a loss of resilience, right? You're just being beaten down so 11:49 right? You're just being beaten down so 11:49 right? You're just being beaten down so much that there's only so much your body 11:51 much that there's only so much your body 11:51 much that there's only so much your body can take. Right? And oftentimes we'll 11:53 can take. Right? And oftentimes we'll 11:53 can take. Right? And oftentimes we'll see this in in our in our practices, 11:55 see this in in our in our practices, 11:55 see this in in our in our practices, people bend until they break, right? 11:57 people bend until they break, right? 11:57 people bend until they break, right? They'll be like, man, I've you know, I 11:58 They'll be like, man, I've you know, I 11:58 They'll be like, man, I've you know, I had this chronic issue for years and 12:00 had this chronic issue for years and 12:00 had this chronic issue for years and years and all of a sudden I just fell 12:02 years and all of a sudden I just fell 12:02 years and all of a sudden I just fell off a cliff. Right? And and and there's 12:04 off a cliff. Right? And and and there's 12:04 off a cliff. Right? And and and there's only so much stress that we can put our 12:06 only so much stress that we can put our 12:06 only so much stress that we can put our bodies through. And these I think are 12:08 bodies through. And these I think are 12:08 bodies through. And these I think are the folks that are most disturbed 12:09 the folks that are most disturbed 12:09 the folks that are most disturbed because they'll go to a doc, a 12:12 because they'll go to a doc, a 12:12 because they'll go to a doc, a conventional doctor, and get labs 12:13 conventional doctor, and get labs 12:13 conventional doctor, and get labs checked, and what's the thing they say? 12:15 checked, and what's the thing they say? 12:15 checked, and what's the thing they say? Well, your numbers aren't that abnormal. 12:17 Well, your numbers aren't that abnormal. 12:17 Well, your numbers aren't that abnormal. Here I don't know why you're feeling you 12:18 Here I don't know why you're feeling you 12:18 Here I don't know why you're feeling you must be, you know, it must be stress. 12:20 must be, you know, it must be stress. 12:20 must be, you know, it must be stress. Here's some some depression medicine or 12:22 Here's some some depression medicine or 12:22 Here's some some depression medicine or anxiety medicine, right? And it's 12:23 anxiety medicine, right? And it's 12:24 anxiety medicine, right? And it's >> Don't love your cholesterol that, so 12:25 >> Don't love your cholesterol that, so 12:25 >> Don't love your cholesterol that, so take a statin and here's your SSRI. One 12:27 take a statin and here's your SSRI. One 12:27 take a statin and here's your SSRI. One of the things that I think is so 12:28 of the things that I think is so 12:28 of the things that I think is so hilarious in medicine that everyone's so 12:30 hilarious in medicine that everyone's so 12:30 hilarious in medicine that everyone's so worried about artificial intelligence 12:32 worried about artificial intelligence 12:32 worried about artificial intelligence and and taking over. 12:34 and and taking over. 12:34 and and taking over. And as I see it, medical school really 12:36 And as I see it, medical school really 12:36 And as I see it, medical school really just becomes learning a bunch of if-then 12:37 just becomes learning a bunch of if-then 12:37 just becomes learning a bunch of if-then statements. If 12:39 statements. If 12:39 statements. If cholesterol high, then do this. If 12:41 cholesterol high, then do this. If 12:41 cholesterol high, then do this. If thyroid is low, then do this. And I see 12:43 thyroid is low, then do this. And I see 12:43 thyroid is low, then do this. And I see at least with artificial intelligence, 12:45 at least with artificial intelligence, 12:45 at least with artificial intelligence, it's thinking. 12:46 it's thinking. 12:46 it's thinking. >> [laughter] 12:46 >> [laughter] 12:46 >> [laughter] >> It's like it's considering more things. 12:48 >> It's like it's considering more things. 12:48 >> It's like it's considering more things. It's not just I think it it is what we 12:51 It's not just I think it it is what we 12:51 It's not just I think it it is what we need, we know, we have to model our 12:52 need, we know, we have to model our 12:52 need, we know, we have to model our brains off of these AI models in 12:55 brains off of these AI models in 12:55 brains off of these AI models in medicine and really say, "Okay, I know 12:57 medicine and really say, "Okay, I know 12:57 medicine and really say, "Okay, I know that 99% of the time it's it's, you 12:59 that 99% of the time it's it's, you 12:59 that 99% of the time it's it's, you know, this, but what if it's that 1%?" 13:01 know, this, but what if it's that 1%?" 13:01 know, this, but what if it's that 1%?" Right? But we are our heuristics and our 13:03 Right? But we are our heuristics and our 13:03 Right? But we are our heuristics and our algorithms in our brain just treat a 13:05 algorithms in our brain just treat a 13:05 algorithms in our brain just treat a thing make us treat things that we see 13:07 thing make us treat things that we see 13:07 thing make us treat things that we see all the time. And so we forget about 13:10 all the time. And so we forget about 13:10 all the time. And so we forget about those other things. We forget about 13:11 those other things. We forget about 13:11 those other things. We forget about oxidative stress. Everyone learns about 13:13 oxidative stress. Everyone learns about 13:13 oxidative stress. Everyone learns about that in medical school. Right? Everyone 13:15 that in medical school. Right? Everyone 13:15 that in medical school. Right? Everyone understands, at least as a human, you 13:17 understands, at least as a human, you 13:17 understands, at least as a human, you know, the impact that poor diets can 13:19 know, the impact that poor diets can 13:19 know, the impact that poor diets can have, lack of exercise, lack of sleep. I 13:22 have, lack of exercise, lack of sleep. I 13:22 have, lack of exercise, lack of sleep. I mean, it's it's it's not rocket science, 13:24 mean, it's it's it's not rocket science, 13:24 mean, it's it's it's not rocket science, right? So one of the things that we say, 13:26 right? So one of the things that we say, 13:26 right? So one of the things that we say, but I think that what we don't 13:27 but I think that what we don't 13:27 but I think that what we don't understand is the true physiologic 13:28 understand is the true physiologic 13:28 understand is the true physiologic impact that it has on so many levels. 13:31 impact that it has on so many levels. 13:31 impact that it has on so many levels. And as an interventional cardiologist 13:32 And as an interventional cardiologist 13:33 And as an interventional cardiologist for 15 years, I was often the front line 13:34 for 15 years, I was often the front line 13:34 for 15 years, I was often the front line of that um when I treated someone's 13:37 of that um when I treated someone's 13:37 of that um when I treated someone's heart attack. They would come in 2:00 in 13:38 heart attack. They would come in 2:00 in 13:38 heart attack. They would come in 2:00 in the morning, middle of the night, an 13:39 the morning, middle of the night, an 13:39 the morning, middle of the night, an artery would rupture burst, cause a 13:41 artery would rupture burst, cause a 13:41 artery would rupture burst, cause a blood clot in a vessel, I'd go in there 13:42 blood clot in a vessel, I'd go in there 13:42 blood clot in a vessel, I'd go in there and and do a procedure. And one of the 13:44 and and do a procedure. And one of the 13:44 and and do a procedure. And one of the first questions I'd ask after the fact 13:46 first questions I'd ask after the fact 13:46 first questions I'd ask after the fact is, "Tell me about your life. How much 13:48 is, "Tell me about your life. How much 13:48 is, "Tell me about your life. How much stress do you have?" "Oh, doc, I've got 13:49 stress do you have?" "Oh, doc, I've got 13:49 stress do you have?" "Oh, doc, I've got my business is this and my family is 13:51 my business is this and my family is 13:51 my business is this and my family is this and whatever." 13:53 this and whatever." 13:53 this and whatever." And I wish that that, you know, if we 13:54 And I wish that that, you know, if we 13:54 And I wish that that, you know, if we had a mind shift, a mindset shift in 13:56 had a mind shift, a mindset shift in 13:56 had a mind shift, a mindset shift in this is addressing those stresses before 13:58 this is addressing those stresses before 13:58 this is addressing those stresses before they explode, right? And and you can't 14:01 they explode, right? And and you can't 14:01 they explode, right? And and you can't take away stress. That's just adulting, 14:02 take away stress. That's just adulting, 14:02 take away stress. That's just adulting, right? Adulting, do not recommend, zero 14:04 right? Adulting, do not recommend, zero 14:04 right? Adulting, do not recommend, zero out of five stars. 14:05 out of five stars. 14:05 out of five stars. >> lifey right now. Yeah, it's just it's 14:07 >> lifey right now. Yeah, it's just it's 14:07 >> lifey right now. Yeah, it's just it's not fun. But what we can do is is alter 14:10 not fun. But what we can do is is alter 14:10 not fun. But what we can do is is alter the way that we react to life, right? 14:14 the way that we react to life, right? 14:14 the way that we react to life, right? Alter the way that react to stress. How 14:16 Alter the way that react to stress. How 14:16 Alter the way that react to stress. How do we take that on and just spit it out, 14:18 do we take that on and just spit it out, 14:18 do we take that on and just spit it out, right? Just just kind of get through it. 14:20 right? Just just kind of get through it. 14:20 right? Just just kind of get through it. Um and I I think that that, you know, 14:23 Um and I I think that that, you know, 14:23 Um and I I think that that, you know, one of the un- under-appreciated 14:26 one of the un- under-appreciated 14:26 one of the un- under-appreciated um 14:27 um 14:27 um uh pandemics that's really going on is 14:29 uh pandemics that's really going on is 14:29 uh pandemics that's really going on is the stress pandemic and it's coming from 14:31 the stress pandemic and it's coming from 14:31 the stress pandemic and it's coming from everywhere. And if we could just 14:33 everywhere. And if we could just 14:33 everywhere. And if we could just deep breathe, do breath work, you know, 14:34 deep breathe, do breath work, you know, 14:35 deep breathe, do breath work, you know, have like, if you ever had uh 1984, the 14:37 have like, if you ever had uh 1984, the 14:37 have like, if you ever had uh 1984, the two minutes hate, let's do the two 14:38 two minutes hate, let's do the two 14:38 two minutes hate, let's do the two minutes of breath work, right? Every 14:40 minutes of breath work, right? Every 14:40 minutes of breath work, right? Every hour on the hour. You know, I think 14:42 hour on the hour. You know, I think 14:42 hour on the hour. You know, I think humanity would improve so much. Mood, 14:45 humanity would improve so much. Mood, 14:45 humanity would improve so much. Mood, health, stress levels, family 14:47 health, stress levels, family 14:47 health, stress levels, family connection, emotion, all of these things 14:48 connection, emotion, all of these things 14:48 connection, emotion, all of these things would get so much better. We'll make
Infections And Heart Disease Link 14:50 would get so much better. We'll make 14:50 would get so much better. We'll make sure that we ask about your top tips for 14:51 sure that we ask about your top tips for 14:51 sure that we ask about your top tips for folks for doing that at home before the 14:53 folks for doing that at home before the 14:53 folks for doing that at home before the end, but I want to make sure we talk 14:54 end, but I want to make sure we talk 14:54 end, but I want to make sure we talk about that oxidative stress piece cuz we 14:56 about that oxidative stress piece cuz we 14:56 about that oxidative stress piece cuz we talked about how toxins can drive that 14:59 talked about how toxins can drive that 14:59 talked about how toxins can drive that irritation at the cellular level and 15:01 irritation at the cellular level and 15:01 irritation at the cellular level and also compromise the body's ability to 15:03 also compromise the body's ability to 15:03 also compromise the body's ability to self-regulate. But we also need to 15:05 self-regulate. But we also need to 15:05 self-regulate. But we also need to address the infections and the parasites 15:09 address the infections and the parasites 15:09 address the infections and the parasites that can just add to that oxidative 15:10 that can just add to that oxidative 15:10 that can just add to that oxidative stress load. So how should people be 15:12 stress load. So how should people be 15:12 stress load. So how should people be thinking about parasites and infections 15:14 thinking about parasites and infections 15:14 thinking about parasites and infections when it comes to heart issues? I mean, 15:16 when it comes to heart issues? I mean, 15:16 when it comes to heart issues? I mean, there is a robust and ever-evolving 15:19 there is a robust and ever-evolving 15:19 there is a robust and ever-evolving literature suggesting that 15:22 literature suggesting that 15:22 literature suggesting that cardiovascular disease, specifically 15:24 cardiovascular disease, specifically 15:24 cardiovascular disease, specifically atherosclerosis, may be infectious in 15:26 atherosclerosis, may be infectious in 15:26 atherosclerosis, may be infectious in origin. Um so there's one uh oral flora 15:30 origin. Um so there's one uh oral flora 15:30 origin. Um so there's one uh oral flora chlamydia um uh pneumonia that they'd 15:33 chlamydia um uh pneumonia that they'd 15:33 chlamydia um uh pneumonia that they'd actually isolated from coronary plaques 15:35 actually isolated from coronary plaques 15:35 actually isolated from coronary plaques and carotid plaques. Um and there are a 15:37 and carotid plaques. Um and there are a 15:37 and carotid plaques. Um and there are a lot of people that that think that um 15:40 lot of people that that think that um 15:40 lot of people that that think that um that infections are really the cause of 15:43 that infections are really the cause of 15:43 that infections are really the cause of cardiovascular disease or at least part 15:44 cardiovascular disease or at least part 15:44 cardiovascular disease or at least part of the problem, part of the part of the 15:45 of the problem, part of the part of the 15:45 of the problem, part of the part of the issue. Um and again, parasitic 15:48 issue. Um and again, parasitic 15:48 issue. Um and again, parasitic infections, chronic inflammation, your 15:50 infections, chronic inflammation, your 15:50 infections, chronic inflammation, your body doesn't know what to react against. 15:52 body doesn't know what to react against. 15:52 body doesn't know what to react against. It's like when my dog you know, flips 15:54 It's like when my dog you know, flips 15:54 It's like when my dog you know, flips out at the Amazon driver. No, he's, you 15:56 out at the Amazon driver. No, he's, you 15:56 out at the Amazon driver. No, he's, you know, he's bringing us something good or 15:57 know, he's bringing us something good or 15:57 know, he's bringing us something good or she's bringing us something good, but 15:59 she's bringing us something good, but 15:59 she's bringing us something good, but he's so trained to kind of like bark at 16:01 he's so trained to kind of like bark at 16:01 he's so trained to kind of like bark at anything that's out of the ordinary that 16:03 anything that's out of the ordinary that 16:03 anything that's out of the ordinary that he goes from zero to 60. He freaks out, 16:04 he goes from zero to 60. He freaks out, 16:05 he goes from zero to 60. He freaks out, right? Or barks at a tree or something. 16:07 right? Or barks at a tree or something. 16:07 right? Or barks at a tree or something. So that's what happens with our body. 16:08 So that's what happens with our body. 16:08 So that's what happens with our body. When we're so primed, so stressed, we're 16:09 When we're so primed, so stressed, we're 16:09 When we're so primed, so stressed, we're reacting to all of these insults even at 16:12 reacting to all of these insults even at 16:12 reacting to all of these insults even at a low grade, we start to attack 16:15 a low grade, we start to attack 16:15 a low grade, we start to attack ourselves, right? We start to attack 16:16 ourselves, right? We start to attack 16:16 ourselves, right? We start to attack plaque. Plaque is atherosclerosis is 16:19 plaque. Plaque is atherosclerosis is 16:19 plaque. Plaque is atherosclerosis is really arteritis, it's an inflammatory 16:21 really arteritis, it's an inflammatory 16:21 really arteritis, it's an inflammatory process of our body reacting against. 16:24 process of our body reacting against. 16:24 process of our body reacting against. And that's reactive oxygen species, 16:26 And that's reactive oxygen species, 16:26 And that's reactive oxygen species, that's pernitrate ions, all these things 16:29 that's pernitrate ions, all these things 16:29 that's pernitrate ions, all these things that lead to DNA damage. And when your 16:32 that lead to DNA damage. And when your 16:32 that lead to DNA damage. And when your body is so 16:33 body is so 16:34 body is so in tune to fighting off what it thinks 16:37 in tune to fighting off what it thinks 16:37 in tune to fighting off what it thinks are foreign offenders, 16:39 are foreign offenders, 16:39 are foreign offenders, it doesn't have time to repair itself. 16:41 it doesn't have time to repair itself. 16:41 it doesn't have time to repair itself. So our own body gets into a greater and 16:44 So our own body gets into a greater and 16:44 So our own body gets into a greater and greater state of disrepair because we're 16:46 greater state of disrepair because we're 16:46 greater state of disrepair because we're fighting off all of these environmental 16:48 fighting off all of these environmental 16:48 fighting off all of these environmental toxins, all these potential infectious 16:50 toxins, all these potential infectious 16:50 toxins, all these potential infectious toxins, all these stressors, all of 16:52 toxins, all these stressors, all of 16:52 toxins, all these stressors, all of these things, so we just don't give our 16:53 these things, so we just don't give our 16:53 these things, so we just don't give our biology a chance to do what it's 16:55 biology a chance to do what it's 16:55 biology a chance to do what it's designed to do. From your perspective,
Lifestyle Pillars For Heart Health 16:58 designed to do. From your perspective, 16:58 designed to do. From your perspective, what is a root cause resolution approach 17:00 what is a root cause resolution approach 17:01 what is a root cause resolution approach to cardiac issues today? Anything that 17:03 to cardiac issues today? Anything that 17:03 to cardiac issues today? Anything that we can do to reduce inflammation. And so 17:04 we can do to reduce inflammation. And so 17:05 we can do to reduce inflammation. And so in my practice, I really focus on diet 17:07 in my practice, I really focus on diet 17:08 in my practice, I really focus on diet and lifestyle. So stress, sleep, and 17:10 and lifestyle. So stress, sleep, and 17:10 and lifestyle. So stress, sleep, and diet. Those are the three pillars of my 17:11 diet. Those are the three pillars of my 17:11 diet. Those are the three pillars of my approach. Um we 17:13 approach. Um we 17:14 approach. Um we we've learned so much. We'll start with 17:15 we've learned so much. We'll start with 17:15 we've learned so much. We'll start with sleep because I think it's the least 17:17 sleep because I think it's the least 17:17 sleep because I think it's the least obvious to most people. Um but 17:20 obvious to most people. Um but 17:20 obvious to most people. Um but seven and a half hours, there's 17:21 seven and a half hours, there's 17:21 seven and a half hours, there's something magical about seven and a half 17:23 something magical about seven and a half 17:23 something magical about seven and a half hours of sleep. You look at cancer 17:24 hours of sleep. You look at cancer 17:24 hours of sleep. You look at cancer rates, you look at cardiovascular 17:25 rates, you look at cardiovascular 17:25 rates, you look at cardiovascular events, 17:26 events, 17:26 events, um and you look at brain function, and 17:28 um and you look at brain function, and 17:28 um and you look at brain function, and seven and a half always keeps coming up. 17:31 seven and a half always keeps coming up. 17:31 seven and a half always keeps coming up. Um there's this newly described uh 17:34 Um there's this newly described uh 17:34 Um there's this newly described uh system called the glymphatic system, 17:36 system called the glymphatic system, 17:36 system called the glymphatic system, right? It's like the the trash 17:37 right? It's like the the trash 17:37 right? It's like the the trash collection system of the body and it 17:39 collection system of the body and it 17:39 collection system of the body and it works best magically at seven and a half 17:41 works best magically at seven and a half 17:41 works best magically at seven and a half hours. That's that's really when it 17:43 hours. That's that's really when it 17:43 hours. That's that's really when it works. So so we need sleep to reset our 17:47 works. So so we need sleep to reset our 17:47 works. So so we need sleep to reset our our brain function, but that's a great 17:49 our brain function, but that's a great 17:49 our brain function, but that's a great amount of time for our body again to 17:51 amount of time for our body again to 17:51 amount of time for our body again to repair itself, for the heart to repair 17:53 repair itself, for the heart to repair 17:53 repair itself, for the heart to repair itself, for our normal circadian diurnal 17:55 itself, for our normal circadian diurnal 17:56 itself, for our normal circadian diurnal rhythms to take effect the way that they 17:58 rhythms to take effect the way that they 17:58 rhythms to take effect the way that they need to so we can surge cortisol at the 17:59 need to so we can surge cortisol at the 17:59 need to so we can surge cortisol at the right time to help us wake up. Cortisol 18:01 right time to help us wake up. Cortisol 18:02 right time to help us wake up. Cortisol is is a bad word sometimes in in 18:05 is is a bad word sometimes in in 18:05 is is a bad word sometimes in in functional medicine because we're living 18:07 functional medicine because we're living 18:07 functional medicine because we're living in the stress, you know, wired and tired 18:09 in the stress, you know, wired and tired 18:09 in the stress, you know, wired and tired mode, but you need diurnal cortisol 18:11 mode, but you need diurnal cortisol 18:11 mode, but you need diurnal cortisol variations to function correctly. And so 18:13 variations to function correctly. And so 18:13 variations to function correctly. And so that can't happen if you're not sleeping 18:15 that can't happen if you're not sleeping 18:15 that can't happen if you're not sleeping well, right? That that is the reset 18:18 well, right? That that is the reset 18:18 well, right? That that is the reset button on a 24-hour cycle for our bodies 18:21 button on a 24-hour cycle for our bodies 18:21 button on a 24-hour cycle for our bodies to know, all right, it's daytime, it's 18:22 to know, all right, it's daytime, it's 18:22 to know, all right, it's daytime, it's nighttime. Um stress we mentioned 18:25 nighttime. Um stress we mentioned 18:25 nighttime. Um stress we mentioned already and I think the other thing is 18:27 already and I think the other thing is 18:27 already and I think the other thing is diet. Again, a lot of the foods that we 18:30 diet. Again, a lot of the foods that we 18:30 diet. Again, a lot of the foods that we think are healthy 18:31 think are healthy 18:31 think are healthy aren't healthy, right? You've probably 18:33 aren't healthy, right? You've probably 18:33 aren't healthy, right? You've probably seen this in your practice as well as a 18:34 seen this in your practice as well as a 18:34 seen this in your practice as well as a lot of things that people think are 18:36 lot of things that people think are 18:36 lot of things that people think are healthy for general populations might 18:38 healthy for general populations might 18:38 healthy for general populations might not be healthy for them. I had someone 18:40 not be healthy for them. I had someone 18:40 not be healthy for them. I had someone who ate a ton of salmon and turns out 18:42 who ate a ton of salmon and turns out 18:42 who ate a ton of salmon and turns out they were reacting to salmon. Well, doc, 18:43 they were reacting to salmon. Well, doc, 18:43 they were reacting to salmon. Well, doc, what am I supposed to eat? Salmon's the 18:45 what am I supposed to eat? Salmon's the 18:45 what am I supposed to eat? Salmon's the healthiest thing there is. No, there's 18:46 healthiest thing there is. No, there's 18:46 healthiest thing there is. No, there's so many other options. But but we have 18:49 so many other options. But but we have 18:49 so many other options. But but we have to move towards this what works for you, 18:52 to move towards this what works for you, 18:52 to move towards this what works for you, right? What's called end of one medicine 18:54 right? What's called end of one medicine 18:54 right? What's called end of one medicine because your genetics, your lifestyle, 18:57 because your genetics, your lifestyle, 18:57 because your genetics, your lifestyle, your things that you've been exposed to, 18:59 your things that you've been exposed to, 18:59 your things that you've been exposed to, the things that you think are funny, and 19:00 the things that you think are funny, and 19:00 the things that you think are funny, and the car like the like to drive probably 19:02 the car like the like to drive probably 19:02 the car like the like to drive probably they're very different than me, right? 19:04 they're very different than me, right? 19:04 they're very different than me, right? And and it would make sense that you 19:06 And and it would make sense that you 19:06 And and it would make sense that you would like to drive a pickup truck and I 19:07 would like to drive a pickup truck and I 19:07 would like to drive a pickup truck and I want a sports car. Oh yeah, I could I 19:09 want a sports car. Oh yeah, I could I 19:09 want a sports car. Oh yeah, I could I could see why that would be, right? So 19:10 could see why that would be, right? So 19:10 could see why that would be, right? So why am I telling you, you know, well, 19:13 why am I telling you, you know, well, 19:13 why am I telling you, you know, well, the foods that you're eat that are going 19:14 the foods that you're eat that are going 19:14 the foods that you're eat that are going to be healthy are the same foods that I 19:15 to be healthy are the same foods that I 19:15 to be healthy are the same foods that I eat that are going to be healthy. We 19:16 eat that are going to be healthy. We 19:16 eat that are going to be healthy. We don't know that for sure, right? We 19:18 don't know that for sure, right? We 19:18 don't know that for sure, right? We can't we can't base population-based or 19:21 can't we can't base population-based or 19:21 can't we can't base population-based or we can't use population-based statistics 19:23 we can't use population-based statistics 19:23 we can't use population-based statistics to apply to an individual. So I'm really 19:25 to apply to an individual. So I'm really 19:25 to apply to an individual. So I'm really excited about precision medicine and and 19:27 excited about precision medicine and and 19:27 excited about precision medicine and and using nutrigenomic testing and all of 19:29 using nutrigenomic testing and all of 19:29 using nutrigenomic testing and all of these things to figure out our nuances 19:31 these things to figure out our nuances 19:31 these things to figure out our nuances and our differences. That's I think 19:32 and our differences. That's I think 19:32 and our differences. That's I think missing from cardiovascular care and 19:34 missing from cardiovascular care and 19:34 missing from cardiovascular care and from just care in general. What are your 19:36 from just care in general. What are your 19:36 from just care in general. What are your favorite labs to run right now on 19:38 favorite labs to run right now on 19:38 favorite labs to run right now on somebody who's just had a cardiac event? 19:39 somebody who's just had a cardiac event? 19:39 somebody who's just had a cardiac event? >> Well, just had a cardiac event is maybe 19:41 >> Well, just had a cardiac event is maybe 19:41 >> Well, just had a cardiac event is maybe a little different. Maybe let's talk 19:43 a little different. Maybe let's talk 19:43 a little different. Maybe let's talk about the person before they've had a 19:44 about the person before they've had a 19:44 about the person before they've had a cardiac event, right? Because after 19:46 cardiac event, right? Because after 19:46 cardiac event, right? Because after >> Because after the fact, the fate is 19:48 >> Because after the fact, the fate is 19:48 >> Because after the fact, the fate is already sealed, right? So before, I
Advanced Testing And Hidden Risks 19:49 already sealed, right? So before, I 19:49 already sealed, right? So before, I absolutely absolutely, well, basic labs, 19:52 absolutely absolutely, well, basic labs, 19:52 absolutely absolutely, well, basic labs, look at liver function, look at look at 19:54 look at liver function, look at look at 19:54 look at liver function, look at look at blood counts and things. I think looking 19:57 blood counts and things. I think looking 19:57 blood counts and things. I think looking at micronutrient testing is is a big 19:59 at micronutrient testing is is a big 19:59 at micronutrient testing is is a big thing for me because again, people can 20:00 thing for me because again, people can 20:00 thing for me because again, people can be nutritionally depleted in certain 20:03 be nutritionally depleted in certain 20:03 be nutritionally depleted in certain things or even heavy metals. Like you 20:04 things or even heavy metals. Like you 20:04 things or even heavy metals. Like you need certain amounts of these trace 20:06 need certain amounts of these trace 20:06 need certain amounts of these trace metals and things again, things we think 20:08 metals and things again, things we think 20:08 metals and things again, things we think we're getting from our food that we're 20:09 we're getting from our food that we're 20:09 we're getting from our food that we're not getting from our food. 20:11 not getting from our food. 20:11 not getting from our food. There are advanced lipid tests that I 20:13 There are advanced lipid tests that I 20:13 There are advanced lipid tests that I don't even call advanced anymore. I 20:15 don't even call advanced anymore. I 20:15 don't even call advanced anymore. I could just call them comprehensive lipid 20:17 could just call them comprehensive lipid 20:17 could just call them comprehensive lipid evaluations looking at particle size, 20:19 evaluations looking at particle size, 20:19 evaluations looking at particle size, shape, functionality, 20:22 shape, functionality, 20:22 shape, functionality, apoB I think is one that's really been 20:26 apoB I think is one that's really been 20:26 apoB I think is one that's really been been championed in the media. You know, 20:28 been championed in the media. You know, 20:28 been championed in the media. You know, if you can't get an advanced or a 20:29 if you can't get an advanced or a 20:29 if you can't get an advanced or a comprehensive lipid profile, apoB is a 20:32 comprehensive lipid profile, apoB is a 20:32 comprehensive lipid profile, apoB is a relatively simple, relatively 20:34 relatively simple, relatively 20:34 relatively simple, relatively inexpensive test to get. LP little A is 20:37 inexpensive test to get. LP little A is 20:37 inexpensive test to get. LP little A is a new thing that comes up quite a bit. 20:38 a new thing that comes up quite a bit. 20:39 a new thing that comes up quite a bit. It's been now recognized as a new 20:42 It's been now recognized as a new 20:42 It's been now recognized as a new significant risk factor and there's some 20:43 significant risk factor and there's some 20:43 significant risk factor and there's some therapeutics coming up for that. But 20:45 therapeutics coming up for that. But 20:45 therapeutics coming up for that. But there are also ways that you can manage 20:46 there are also ways that you can manage 20:46 there are also ways that you can manage that through nutrition as well. And in 20:48 that through nutrition as well. And in 20:49 that through nutrition as well. And in terms of imaging, what I like are these 20:51 terms of imaging, what I like are these 20:51 terms of imaging, what I like are these new AI enhanced CT scans and I think 20:54 new AI enhanced CT scans and I think 20:54 new AI enhanced CT scans and I think that's the test that we've needed in 20:57 that's the test that we've needed in 20:57 that's the test that we've needed in cardiology for forever. I don't want you 20:59 cardiology for forever. I don't want you 20:59 cardiology for forever. I don't want you to tell everybody this. It's secret for 21:00 to tell everybody this. It's secret for 21:00 to tell everybody this. It's secret for your audience, right? I call this the 21:01 your audience, right? I call this the 21:01 your audience, right? I call this the dirty secret of cardiology is when we do 21:04 dirty secret of cardiology is when we do 21:04 dirty secret of cardiology is when we do stress testing, right? Can let's like 21:05 stress testing, right? Can let's like 21:05 stress testing, right? Can let's like let's say you went to a doctor and said, 21:07 let's say you went to a doctor and said, 21:07 let's say you went to a doctor and said, "I'm worried that I'm going to have a 21:08 "I'm worried that I'm going to have a 21:08 "I'm worried that I'm going to have a heart attack." All right, let's put you 21:09 heart attack." All right, let's put you 21:09 heart attack." All right, let's put you on a treadmill, let's run you on a 21:10 on a treadmill, let's run you on a 21:10 on a treadmill, let's run you on a treadmill and see what happens, right? 21:12 treadmill and see what happens, right? 21:12 treadmill and see what happens, right? Standard happens 100 million times a day 21:14 Standard happens 100 million times a day 21:14 Standard happens 100 million times a day across the globe. 21:16 across the globe. 21:16 across the globe. The problem there is that when you do a 21:18 The problem there is that when you do a 21:18 The problem there is that when you do a stress test, that test is designed to 21:20 stress test, that test is designed to 21:20 stress test, that test is designed to assess for what's called a flow limiting 21:22 assess for what's called a flow limiting 21:22 assess for what's called a flow limiting blockage, something that's 70% or more. 21:25 blockage, something that's 70% or more. 21:25 blockage, something that's 70% or more. Those are why why 70% because that's the 21:28 Those are why why 70% because that's the 21:28 Those are why why 70% because that's the threshold where you'll start experience 21:29 threshold where you'll start experience 21:29 threshold where you'll start experience symptoms of reduced blood flow to your 21:32 symptoms of reduced blood flow to your 21:32 symptoms of reduced blood flow to your heart muscle as you're exercising. 21:34 heart muscle as you're exercising. 21:34 heart muscle as you're exercising. So, if you have someone who's not having 21:36 So, if you have someone who's not having 21:36 So, if you have someone who's not having symptoms, it'd be really weird for them 21:39 symptoms, it'd be really weird for them 21:39 symptoms, it'd be really weird for them to have a positive stress test. But 21:41 to have a positive stress test. But 21:41 to have a positive stress test. But people feel this level of safety when 21:43 people feel this level of safety when 21:43 people feel this level of safety when they get a stress test that's normal. 21:45 they get a stress test that's normal. 21:45 they get a stress test that's normal. The problem is when we talk about heart 21:47 The problem is when we talk about heart 21:47 The problem is when we talk about heart attack in particular, it's not those 70% 21:49 attack in particular, it's not those 70% 21:49 attack in particular, it's not those 70% or more lesions that rupture. It's the 21:51 or more lesions that rupture. It's the 21:51 or more lesions that rupture. It's the immature 20 or 30 or 40% plaques that 21:53 immature 20 or 30 or 40% plaques that 21:53 immature 20 or 30 or 40% plaques that haven't yet had that time to organize 21:55 haven't yet had that time to organize 21:56 haven't yet had that time to organize that that that digest the blood vessel 21:58 that that that digest the blood vessel 21:58 that that that digest the blood vessel wall and rupture. So, you're getting the 22:00 wall and rupture. So, you're getting the 22:00 wall and rupture. So, you're getting the wrong test for the wrong question and it 22:04 wrong test for the wrong question and it 22:04 wrong test for the wrong question and it just it's one of the things that 22:05 just it's one of the things that 22:05 just it's one of the things that frustrates me so much about cardiology 22:07 frustrates me so much about cardiology 22:07 frustrates me so much about cardiology and I talk to my colleagues all the time 22:08 and I talk to my colleagues all the time 22:08 and I talk to my colleagues all the time and they're like, "Well, what do we what 22:09 and they're like, "Well, what do we what 22:09 and they're like, "Well, what do we what else do we have?" So, with these new 22:11 else do we have?" So, with these new 22:11 else do we have?" So, with these new generation of tests, these CAT scans, 22:13 generation of tests, these CAT scans, 22:13 generation of tests, these CAT scans, you can actually go in, assess for 22:15 you can actually go in, assess for 22:15 you can actually go in, assess for blockage, which is great, assess for 22:17 blockage, which is great, assess for 22:17 blockage, which is great, assess for calcium. But what you can also see is 22:19 calcium. But what you can also see is 22:19 calcium. But what you can also see is what are called the soft plaques. So, 22:21 what are called the soft plaques. So, 22:21 what are called the soft plaques. So, these are the non-calcified plaques. You 22:22 these are the non-calcified plaques. You 22:22 these are the non-calcified plaques. You can actually get an index of the vessel 22:24 can actually get an index of the vessel 22:24 can actually get an index of the vessel health itself to get a much better idea 22:27 health itself to get a much better idea 22:27 health itself to get a much better idea of what this person's cardiovascular 22:28 of what this person's cardiovascular 22:28 of what this person's cardiovascular risk is. 22:30 risk is. 22:30 risk is. And I think even more importantly is 22:31 And I think even more importantly is 22:31 And I think even more importantly is that you can you can then engage in diet 22:34 that you can you can then engage in diet 22:34 that you can you can then engage in diet lifestyle changes and see improvement in 22:36 lifestyle changes and see improvement in 22:37 lifestyle changes and see improvement in those parameters. So, it's getting to 22:38 those parameters. So, it's getting to 22:38 those parameters. So, it's getting to the problem before it becomes a problem, 22:40 the problem before it becomes a problem, 22:40 the problem before it becomes a problem, which I think is great. Now, after 22:42 which I think is great. Now, after 22:42 which I think is great. Now, after cardiovascular testing, you know, again, 22:45 cardiovascular testing, you know, again, 22:45 cardiovascular testing, you know, again, the cat's out of the bag. Now we have 22:46 the cat's out of the bag. Now we have 22:46 the cat's out of the bag. Now we have other things to do. We need to look at 22:48 other things to do. We need to look at 22:48 other things to do. We need to look at cardiac function like ultrasounds of the 22:49 cardiac function like ultrasounds of the 22:49 cardiac function like ultrasounds of the heart. Again, I think that cholesterol 22:51 heart. Again, I think that cholesterol 22:51 heart. Again, I think that cholesterol is an important part of that equation 22:54 is an important part of that equation 22:54 is an important part of that equation and we do need to get it to certain 22:55 and we do need to get it to certain 22:55 and we do need to get it to certain levels, but it's not the only part of 22:57 levels, but it's not the only part of 22:57 levels, but it's not the only part of that equation, right? So, again, we 22:58 that equation, right? So, again, we 22:58 that equation, right? So, again, we focus on lifestyle pillars, diet diet 23:01 focus on lifestyle pillars, diet diet 23:01 focus on lifestyle pillars, diet diet pillars, exposures, looking at the 23:03 pillars, exposures, looking at the 23:03 pillars, exposures, looking at the environment and 23:06 environment and 23:06 environment and and you know, and and really come up 23:07 and you know, and and really come up 23:08 and you know, and and really come up with 23:09 with 23:09 with a personalized plan for that person as 23:10 a personalized plan for that person as 23:10 a personalized plan for that person as to how do you avoid this rodeo again, 23:13 to how do you avoid this rodeo again, 23:13 to how do you avoid this rodeo again, right? You've been to the show once. I 23:14 right? You've been to the show once. I 23:14 right? You've been to the show once. I don't want you to be back here. I don't 23:16 don't want you to be back here. I don't 23:16 don't want you to be back here. I don't like repeat business in my job. So, how 23:18 like repeat business in my job. So, how 23:18 like repeat business in my job. So, how do we keep you away? And and that's 23:20 do we keep you away? And and that's 23:20 do we keep you away? And and that's often I think where I find the most 23:21 often I think where I find the most 23:21 often I think where I find the most reward is is preventing that next cardio
Early Signs Of Heart Disease 23:26 reward is is preventing that next cardio 23:26 reward is is preventing that next cardio cardiac event. So, for somebody that has 23:29 cardiac event. So, for somebody that has 23:29 cardiac event. So, for somebody that has just gotten a scary sign that it's time 23:33 just gotten a scary sign that it's time 23:33 just gotten a scary sign that it's time to start paying attention to their 23:34 to start paying attention to their 23:34 to start paying attention to their cardiovascular health, first of all, 23:35 cardiovascular health, first of all, 23:35 cardiovascular health, first of all, what are those signs and what is your 23:37 what are those signs and what is your 23:37 what are those signs and what is your advice for them? The first thing I do 23:39 advice for them? The first thing I do 23:39 advice for them? The first thing I do when somebody says that oh my gosh, I'm 23:40 when somebody says that oh my gosh, I'm 23:40 when somebody says that oh my gosh, I'm going to die, I'm going to have this 23:41 going to die, I'm going to have this 23:41 going to die, I'm going to have this test is look, 23:42 test is look, 23:42 test is look, you're going to be okay. We'll we'll get 23:44 you're going to be okay. We'll we'll get 23:44 you're going to be okay. We'll we'll get you through, all right? There are very 23:45 you through, all right? There are very 23:45 you through, all right? There are very few instances where it's a lights and 23:47 few instances where it's a lights and 23:47 few instances where it's a lights and sirens emergency, so let's just relax 23:49 sirens emergency, so let's just relax 23:49 sirens emergency, so let's just relax because the anxiety is not going to 23:51 because the anxiety is not going to 23:51 because the anxiety is not going to serve you well in the long run. So, 23:52 serve you well in the long run. So, 23:52 serve you well in the long run. So, often times I'll just go and give them a 23:53 often times I'll just go and give them a 23:53 often times I'll just go and give them a hug. 23:54 hug. 23:54 hug. >> [laughter] 23:54 >> [laughter] 23:54 >> [laughter] >> I think that's that's one of the first 23:56 >> I think that's that's one of the first 23:56 >> I think that's that's one of the first interventions. We're going to get 23:57 interventions. We're going to get 23:57 interventions. We're going to get through this, right? And then, you know, 23:58 through this, right? And then, you know, 23:59 through this, right? And then, you know, seeing a professional, don't go to 24:00 seeing a professional, don't go to 24:00 seeing a professional, don't go to Google or chat or any of these things. 24:02 Google or chat or any of these things. 24:02 Google or chat or any of these things. You need to see someone who really 24:04 You need to see someone who really 24:04 You need to see someone who really understands how to triage these issues 24:06 understands how to triage these issues 24:07 understands how to triage these issues and when what are the real red flags and 24:08 and when what are the real red flags and 24:08 and when what are the real red flags and what aren't. In terms of the common 24:10 what aren't. In terms of the common 24:10 what aren't. In terms of the common signs of cardiovascular disease, I wish 24:12 signs of cardiovascular disease, I wish 24:12 signs of cardiovascular disease, I wish I had a great answer. I mean, the the 24:14 I had a great answer. I mean, the the 24:14 I had a great answer. I mean, the the elephant in my chest, chest pain shoots 24:16 elephant in my chest, chest pain shoots 24:16 elephant in my chest, chest pain shoots to my arm, shoots to my neck. Yeah, I'd 24:17 to my arm, shoots to my neck. Yeah, I'd 24:17 to my arm, shoots to my neck. Yeah, I'd maybe get that once or twice a month in 24:20 maybe get that once or twice a month in 24:20 maybe get that once or twice a month in my practice, not frequently. Often times 24:22 my practice, not frequently. Often times 24:22 my practice, not frequently. Often times I think it's fatigue. You know, my get 24:25 I think it's fatigue. You know, my get 24:25 I think it's fatigue. You know, my get up and go got up and went and I just 24:26 up and go got up and went and I just 24:26 up and go got up and went and I just don't have the same oomph that I had 24:28 don't have the same oomph that I had 24:28 don't have the same oomph that I had before. That can be an early sign of 24:30 before. That can be an early sign of 24:30 before. That can be an early sign of cardiovascular disease. For men, 24:32 cardiovascular disease. For men, 24:32 cardiovascular disease. For men, erectile dysfunction. God gave us a 24:33 erectile dysfunction. God gave us a 24:33 erectile dysfunction. God gave us a check engine light 24:35 check engine light 24:35 check engine light and and that can be a that can be a 24:38 and and that can be a that can be a 24:38 and and that can be a that can be a marker of poor vascular health. For 24:41 marker of poor vascular health. For 24:41 marker of poor vascular health. For women, I think that it is so challenging 24:43 women, I think that it is so challenging 24:43 women, I think that it is so challenging because all the initial studies looking 24:46 because all the initial studies looking 24:46 because all the initial studies looking at symptomatology were based on old 24:48 at symptomatology were based on old 24:48 at symptomatology were based on old white dudes. Right? So, so in my 24:50 white dudes. Right? So, so in my 24:50 white dudes. Right? So, so in my practice, I say, you know, any weird 24:52 practice, I say, you know, any weird 24:52 practice, I say, you know, any weird feeling from nose to pelvis is 24:54 feeling from nose to pelvis is 24:54 feeling from nose to pelvis is cardiovascular until proven otherwise. I 24:56 cardiovascular until proven otherwise. I 24:56 cardiovascular until proven otherwise. I had a woman one time who came in with a 24:58 had a woman one time who came in with a 24:58 had a woman one time who came in with a cardiac event and her presenting symptom 25:00 cardiac event and her presenting symptom 25:00 cardiac event and her presenting symptom was toothache. She had a toothache, went 25:02 was toothache. She had a toothache, went 25:02 was toothache. She had a toothache, went to her dentist, you know, he or she 25:04 to her dentist, you know, he or she 25:04 to her dentist, you know, he or she looked in there, did x-rays, all these 25:05 looked in there, did x-rays, all these 25:05 looked in there, did x-rays, all these things and she's like, you know, finally 25:07 things and she's like, you know, finally 25:07 things and she's like, you know, finally she was actually the wife of a patient 25:10 she was actually the wife of a patient 25:10 she was actually the wife of a patient of mine and so she said, "You know, Dr. 25:11 of mine and so she said, "You know, Dr. 25:11 of mine and so she said, "You know, Dr. B, I've just been having this thing. 25:13 B, I've just been having this thing. 25:13 B, I've just been having this thing. What's going on?" I'm like, "You know 25:13 What's going on?" I'm like, "You know 25:13 What's going on?" I'm like, "You know what? Let's just It was like the last 25:15 what? Let's just It was like the last 25:15 what? Let's just It was like the last patient of the day kind of thing. I'm 25:16 patient of the day kind of thing. I'm 25:16 patient of the day kind of thing. I'm like, you know, let's just do an
