Heavy Periods after 40? How to fix heavy and painful periods

Heavy or unpredictable periods can be a common part of perimenopause—but that doesn’t mean you should simply suffer through them.

As hormone levels fluctuate and ovulation becomes less consistent, progesterone can decrease relative to estrogen, which may cause the uterine lining to build up and lead to heavier or irregular bleeding.

But certain symptoms deserve medical evaluation, including soaking through a pad or tampon every hour, passing large clots, bleeding for more than 10 days, bleeding between periods, dizziness or fatigue, or any bleeding after 12 months without a period.
