Thanks for 0:26 looking forward to this. Thanks for being here. 0:27 being here. 0:27 being here. >> It's my pleasure. Thank you for having 0:29 >> It's my pleasure. Thank you for having 0:29 >> It's my pleasure. Thank you for having me. 0:29 me. 0:30 me. So, I'd love to start with your story. 0:32 So, I'd love to start with your story. 0:32 So, I'd love to start with your story. What pulled you into microbiome research 0:34 What pulled you into microbiome research 0:34 What pulled you into microbiome research in the first place? 0:36 in the first place? 0:36 in the first place? >> Yeah. You know, um I I think it's a a 0:38 >> Yeah. You know, um I I think it's a a 0:38 >> Yeah. You know, um I I think it's a a mix of genetics and uh and movies. Um 0:42 mix of genetics and uh and movies. Um 0:42 mix of genetics and uh and movies. Um so, um my if you if you look at my 0:45 so, um my if you if you look at my 0:46 so, um my if you if you look at my parents, um so my my dad was a micro 0:48 parents, um so my my dad was a micro 0:48 parents, um so my my dad was a micro electronics engineer. So, he was ahead 0:51 electronics engineer. So, he was ahead 0:51 electronics engineer. So, he was ahead in his field. He had almost 400 US 0:53 in his field. He had almost 400 US 0:53 in his field. He had almost 400 US patents in his name. Um so, he he was a 0:56 patents in his name. Um so, he he was a 0:56 patents in his name. Um so, he he was a very systems thinking kind of guy. um 0:59 very systems thinking kind of guy. um 0:59 very systems thinking kind of guy. um inventing things and you know all that. 1:01 inventing things and you know all that. 1:01 inventing things and you know all that. So he was he was in that field and and 1:03 So he was he was in that field and and 1:03 So he was he was in that field and and then my mom's a a medical doctor and 1:05 then my mom's a a medical doctor and 1:06 then my mom's a a medical doctor and she's uh a clinician with the soft 1:08 she's uh a clinician with the soft 1:08 she's uh a clinician with the soft sciences and and has a very kind of 1:10 sciences and and has a very kind of 1:10 sciences and and has a very kind of empathetic view in in science and 1:13 empathetic view in in science and 1:13 empathetic view in in science and medicine. Uh, and I think I got like a 1:16 medicine. Uh, and I think I got like a 1:16 medicine. Uh, and I think I got like a little bit of both of them, you know, 1:17 little bit of both of them, you know, 1:17 little bit of both of them, you know, and and I've got the love and passion 1:20 and and I've got the love and passion 1:20 and and I've got the love and passion for the biological sciences and the the 1:23 for the biological sciences and the the 1:23 for the biological sciences and the the empathetic uh, perspective on that on 1:26 empathetic uh, perspective on that on 1:26 empathetic uh, perspective on that on helping people through science. Uh, but 1:29 helping people through science. Uh, but 1:29 helping people through science. Uh, but then thinking about the science like a 1:31 then thinking about the science like a 1:31 then thinking about the science like a systems engineer um, and always looking 1:34 systems engineer um, and always looking 1:34 systems engineer um, and always looking for the nuance and the innovation in in 1:37 for the nuance and the innovation in in 1:37 for the nuance and the innovation in in all of this. Um, so I think generally 1:39 all of this. Um, so I think generally 1:39 all of this. Um, so I think generally that that's how my my my brain is 1:42 that that's how my my my brain is 1:42 that that's how my my my brain is structured. But then the question is 1:44 structured. But then the question is 1:44 structured. But then the question is like where do you go with that right? So 1:46 like where do you go with that right? So 1:46 like where do you go with that right? So if I became a conventional doctor like I 1:49 if I became a conventional doctor like I 1:49 if I became a conventional doctor like I was thinking about doing I wouldn't 1:51 was thinking about doing I wouldn't 1:51 was thinking about doing I wouldn't necessarily get to exercise the 1:53 necessarily get to exercise the 1:53 necessarily get to exercise the engineering part of it or if I went into 1:55 engineering part of it or if I went into 1:55 engineering part of it or if I went into physics and engineering I wouldn't have 1:57 physics and engineering I wouldn't have 1:57 physics and engineering I wouldn't have the biological empathy part of it um as 2:00 the biological empathy part of it um as 2:00 the biological empathy part of it um as much. It would you could certainly find 2:02 much. It would you could certainly find 2:02 much. It would you could certainly find outlets for those um but it wouldn't be 2:04 outlets for those um but it wouldn't be 2:04 outlets for those um but it wouldn't be as straightforward. Um and then the 2:06 as straightforward. Um and then the 2:06 as straightforward. Um and then the other part of me that's that is um a big 2:09 other part of me that's that is um a big 2:09 other part of me that's that is um a big driver is I' I've got a very deep 2:11 driver is I' I've got a very deep 2:11 driver is I' I've got a very deep curiosity for frontiers. Um and so I was 2:15 curiosity for frontiers. Um and so I was 2:15 curiosity for frontiers. Um and so I was always very interested in the world of 2:17 always very interested in the world of 2:17 always very interested in the world of quantum mechanics and you know if I was 2:19 quantum mechanics and you know if I was 2:19 quantum mechanics and you know if I was better at math I would probably have 2:21 better at math I would probably have 2:21 better at math I would probably have gone in that route but I'm not I'm not 2:23 gone in that route but I'm not I'm not 2:23 gone in that route but I'm not I'm not good enough at math to to have gone that 2:25 good enough at math to to have gone that 2:25 good enough at math to to have gone that route. And so um I was watching a movie 2:29 route. And so um I was watching a movie 2:29 route. And so um I was watching a movie my freshman year of college. Uh, I knew 2:32 my freshman year of college. Uh, I knew 2:32 my freshman year of college. Uh, I knew I was going to go into the sciences and 2:33 I was going to go into the sciences and 2:33 I was going to go into the sciences and I was premed already, you know, by by by 2:36 I was premed already, you know, by by by 2:36 I was premed already, you know, by by by determination. Um, and I was trying to 2:39 determination. Um, and I was trying to 2:39 determination. Um, and I was trying to figure out like what did I want to do 2:40 figure out like what did I want to do 2:40 figure out like what did I want to do from a from a major perspective. Um, 2:44 from a from a major perspective. Um, 2:44 from a from a major perspective. Um, everyone kind of goes biology or 2:45 everyone kind of goes biology or 2:45 everyone kind of goes biology or chemistry or something like that. And 2:47 chemistry or something like that. And 2:47 chemistry or something like that. And then that movie Outbreak, if you 2:48 then that movie Outbreak, if you 2:48 then that movie Outbreak, if you remember that, um, was it with Morgan 2:52 remember that, um, was it with Morgan 2:52 remember that, um, was it with Morgan Freeman and Dustin Hoffman, right? It 2:53 Freeman and Dustin Hoffman, right? It 2:54 Freeman and Dustin Hoffman, right? It was like a it was like a Ebolaike 2:56 was like a it was like a Ebolaike 2:56 was like a it was like a Ebolaike outbreak in a town, small town in the 2:59 outbreak in a town, small town in the 2:59 outbreak in a town, small town in the US. Um, and then it was like these all
How Kieran Got Into Microbiology 3:02 US. Um, and then it was like these all 3:02 US. Um, and then it was like these all these CDC scientists who were 3:04 these CDC scientists who were 3:04 these CDC scientists who were veriologists and all that kind of 3:05 veriologists and all that kind of 3:05 veriologists and all that kind of chasing down this this bug and trying to 3:07 chasing down this this bug and trying to 3:07 chasing down this this bug and trying to figure out what a cure for it and all 3:09 figure out what a cure for it and all 3:09 figure out what a cure for it and all that. And I was like, that is exciting. 3:11 that. And I was like, that is exciting. 3:11 that. And I was like, that is exciting. That's what I want to do, you know? I 3:12 That's what I want to do, you know? I 3:12 That's what I want to do, you know? I want to I want to figure out pathogens 3:14 want to I want to figure out pathogens 3:14 want to I want to figure out pathogens and chase them down and figure out cures 3:16 and chase them down and figure out cures 3:16 and chase them down and figure out cures for them and all that. So that's what 3:18 for them and all that. So that's what 3:18 for them and all that. So that's what got me into the world of microbiology. 3:21 got me into the world of microbiology. 3:21 got me into the world of microbiology. Um, so I I studied started studying 3:24 Um, so I I studied started studying 3:24 Um, so I I studied started studying microbiology and I stayed with that part 3:26 microbiology and I stayed with that part 3:26 microbiology and I stayed with that part of my education. Um and then what got me 3:30 of my education. Um and then what got me 3:30 of my education. Um and then what got me into the microbiome side of it is that 3:32 into the microbiome side of it is that 3:32 into the microbiome side of it is that frontier thinking. Um you know because 3:36 frontier thinking. Um you know because 3:36 frontier thinking. Um you know because that was the kind of unknown untapped 3:38 that was the kind of unknown untapped 3:38 that was the kind of unknown untapped area in microbiology. Um in fact there 3:41 area in microbiology. Um in fact there 3:41 area in microbiology. Um in fact there was there was actually one kind of key 3:44 was there was actually one kind of key 3:44 was there was actually one kind of key moment that got me much more interested 3:46 moment that got me much more interested 3:46 moment that got me much more interested in the microbiome than any other aspect 3:48 in the microbiome than any other aspect 3:48 in the microbiome than any other aspect of microbiology. It was I was number of 3:51 of microbiology. It was I was number of 3:51 of microbiology. It was I was number of years ago, this is almost like 20 years 3:53 years ago, this is almost like 20 years 3:53 years ago, this is almost like 20 years ago, I was asked to uh contribute to an 3:56 ago, I was asked to uh contribute to an 3:56 ago, I was asked to uh contribute to an article for US News and World Report on 4:00 article for US News and World Report on 4:00 article for US News and World Report on the hygiene hypothesis, right? Um and 4:04 the hygiene hypothesis, right? Um and 4:04 the hygiene hypothesis, right? Um and and one of the questions that was asked 4:06 and one of the questions that was asked 4:06 and one of the questions that was asked of me was, you know, like how many real 4:09 of me was, you know, like how many real 4:09 of me was, you know, like how many real pathogens do we have that we have to be 4:11 pathogens do we have that we have to be 4:11 pathogens do we have that we have to be really concerned about, you know, on a 4:13 really concerned about, you know, on a 4:13 really concerned about, you know, on a day-to-day basis? And I was like, I 4:14 day-to-day basis? And I was like, I 4:14 day-to-day basis? And I was like, I don't know, that's a great question. Let 4:16 don't know, that's a great question. Let 4:16 don't know, that's a great question. Let me actually dig into it a little bit. 4:17 me actually dig into it a little bit. 4:17 me actually dig into it a little bit. And so I started digging into it to 4:18 And so I started digging into it to 4:18 And so I started digging into it to understand like of all the microbes 4:21 understand like of all the microbes 4:21 understand like of all the microbes we've discovered, viruses, bacteria, 4:22 we've discovered, viruses, bacteria, 4:22 we've discovered, viruses, bacteria, fungi, all that stuff, like what 4:24 fungi, all that stuff, like what 4:24 fungi, all that stuff, like what percentage of them are, you know, direct 4:27 percentage of them are, you know, direct 4:27 percentage of them are, you know, direct or absolute pathogens, right? That that 4:29 or absolute pathogens, right? That that 4:29 or absolute pathogens, right? That that you come in contact with them, they're 4:30 you come in contact with them, they're 4:30 you come in contact with them, they're going to make you sick and you're you're 4:32 going to make you sick and you're you're 4:32 going to make you sick and you're you're you're in trouble. And and what I found 4:35 you're in trouble. And and what I found 4:35 you're in trouble. And and what I found was that it's like 1%. 4:38 was that it's like 1%. 4:38 was that it's like 1%. Right? Which means that 99.9% 4:41 Right? Which means that 99.9% 4:42 Right? Which means that 99.9% of all microbes we encounter are either 4:44 of all microbes we encounter are either 4:44 of all microbes we encounter are either benign or beneficial. But even in the 4:47 benign or beneficial. But even in the 4:47 benign or beneficial. But even in the world of microbiology there's so much 4:49 world of microbiology there's so much 4:49 world of microbiology there's so much focus on that.1%. 4:52 focus on that.1%. 4:52 focus on that.1%. You know all the research work I did in 4:54 You know all the research work I did in 4:54 You know all the research work I did in my microbiology training was on 4:56 my microbiology training was on 4:56 my microbiology training was on pathogens and that's the track you go 4:59 pathogens and that's the track you go 4:59 pathogens and that's the track you go right normally and uh especially we go 5:01 right normally and uh especially we go 5:01 right normally and uh especially we go clinical microbiology you're focusing on 5:04 clinical microbiology you're focusing on 5:04 clinical microbiology you're focusing on those pathogens. So then of course my 5:06 those pathogens. So then of course my 5:06 those pathogens. So then of course my mind goes what about the 99.9%. 5:09 mind goes what about the 99.9%. 5:09 mind goes what about the 99.9%. Like 5:09 Like 5:09 Like >> isn't that the best way to control 5:11 >> isn't that the best way to control 5:11 >> isn't that the best way to control the.1% letting them flourish right? And 5:15 the.1% letting them flourish right? And 5:15 the.1% letting them flourish right? And so then shortly after that, this whole 5:17 so then shortly after that, this whole 5:17 so then shortly after that, this whole human microbiome project kicked off and 5:18 human microbiome project kicked off and 5:18 human microbiome project kicked off and I was like, that's where they're 5:20 I was like, that's where they're 5:20 I was like, that's where they're studying the 99.9%. Right? That's where 5:23 studying the 99.9%. Right? That's where 5:23 studying the 99.9%. Right? That's where I want to focus my time. So very long uh
Why the Microbiome Matters for Immunity 5:26 I want to focus my time. So very long uh 5:26 I want to focus my time. So very long uh probably the longest answer to that 5:28 probably the longest answer to that 5:28 probably the longest answer to that question you've ever had, but uh 5:30 question you've ever had, but uh 5:30 question you've ever had, but uh hopefully that provides context. 5:32 hopefully that provides context. 5:32 hopefully that provides context. >> I love that. It's so true. It's not just 5:34 >> I love that. It's so true. It's not just 5:34 >> I love that. It's so true. It's not just about that.1%. 5:37 about that.1%. 5:37 about that.1%. It's about the other 99.9% 5:40 It's about the other 99.9% 5:40 It's about the other 99.9% and the terrain, right? And how they're 5:42 and the terrain, right? And how they're 5:42 and the terrain, right? And how they're all interacting. So in my world, mold 5:47 all interacting. So in my world, mold 5:47 all interacting. So in my world, mold and biotoxins, environmental illness, we 5:51 and biotoxins, environmental illness, we 5:51 and biotoxins, environmental illness, we constantly talk about immune 5:53 constantly talk about immune 5:53 constantly talk about immune dysregulation, but what I always come 5:56 dysregulation, but what I always come 5:56 dysregulation, but what I always come back to with my patients is that the gut 5:59 back to with my patients is that the gut 5:59 back to with my patients is that the gut rules it all. So Karen, can you help me 6:02 rules it all. So Karen, can you help me 6:02 rules it all. So Karen, can you help me make that case? Why is the microbiome so 6:05 make that case? Why is the microbiome so 6:05 make that case? Why is the microbiome so central to immune regulation in the 6:07 central to immune regulation in the 6:07 central to immune regulation in the first place? Yeah, you know, um the best 6:09 first place? Yeah, you know, um the best 6:09 first place? Yeah, you know, um the best analogy I always give is uh think of the 6:13 analogy I always give is uh think of the 6:13 analogy I always give is uh think of the immune system as a army that's born with 6:17 immune system as a army that's born with 6:17 immune system as a army that's born with all of the tools. You know, they have 6:19 all of the tools. You know, they have 6:19 all of the tools. You know, they have all the guns and bombs and tanks and 6:21 all the guns and bombs and tanks and 6:21 all the guns and bombs and tanks and everything that they need to fight a 6:22 everything that they need to fight a 6:22 everything that they need to fight a war, but they have no general. They have 6:25 war, but they have no general. They have 6:25 war, but they have no general. They have no information, right? They don't know 6:27 no information, right? They don't know 6:28 no information, right? They don't know who the enemy is effectively, right? And 6:31 who the enemy is effectively, right? And 6:31 who the enemy is effectively, right? And they cannot know that which which makes 6:33 they cannot know that which which makes 6:33 they cannot know that which which makes sense because most of the innate 6:35 sense because most of the innate 6:35 sense because most of the innate knowledge in our cells are coded in our 6:38 knowledge in our cells are coded in our 6:38 knowledge in our cells are coded in our DNA. But you cannot code the environment 6:41 DNA. But you cannot code the environment 6:41 DNA. But you cannot code the environment in your DNA cuz the environment changes, 6:44 in your DNA cuz the environment changes, 6:44 in your DNA cuz the environment changes, right? So you're you're all the way out 6:46 right? So you're you're all the way out 6:46 right? So you're you're all the way out in Virginia, Virginia Beach, and I'm in 6:49 in Virginia, Virginia Beach, and I'm in 6:49 in Virginia, Virginia Beach, and I'm in Chicago. We have different things that 6:51 Chicago. We have different things that 6:51 Chicago. We have different things that our immune systems have to battle. And 6:53 our immune systems have to battle. And 6:53 our immune systems have to battle. And so if my immune system was born with a 6:56 so if my immune system was born with a 6:56 so if my immune system was born with a certain limited code as to what the 6:59 certain limited code as to what the 6:59 certain limited code as to what the enemy is and who it is and how you go 7:01 enemy is and who it is and how you go 7:01 enemy is and who it is and how you go after it, I would be in huge trouble if 7:04 after it, I would be in huge trouble if 7:04 after it, I would be in huge trouble if I just went to the next state, right? 7:06 I just went to the next state, right? 7:06 I just went to the next state, right? And so the immune system is one of the 7:09 And so the immune system is one of the 7:09 And so the immune system is one of the only systems in your body that has to 7:12 only systems in your body that has to 7:12 only systems in your body that has to adapt to your environment, right? And as 7:15 adapt to your environment, right? And as 7:15 adapt to your environment, right? And as a result of that, the immune cells are 7:17 a result of that, the immune cells are 7:17 a result of that, the immune cells are born naive. They have to learn about 7:20 born naive. They have to learn about 7:20 born naive. They have to learn about your environment wherever you go. and 7:22 your environment wherever you go. and 7:22 your environment wherever you go. and they have to do it relatively quickly 7:24 they have to do it relatively quickly 7:24 they have to do it relatively quickly because if I go on vacation to Asia next 7:27 because if I go on vacation to Asia next 7:28 because if I go on vacation to Asia next week, you know, my immune system has to 7:29 week, you know, my immune system has to 7:30 week, you know, my immune system has to adapt to that area, right? And so then 7:32 adapt to that area, right? And so then 7:32 adapt to that area, right? And so then the question becomes, well, how do they 7:34 the question becomes, well, how do they 7:34 the question becomes, well, how do they learn, right? How do they learn what to 7:36 learn, right? How do they learn what to 7:36 learn, right? How do they learn what to attack, what not to attack, what what 7:38 attack, what not to attack, what what 7:38 attack, what not to attack, what what level of seriousness to pay attention to 7:41 level of seriousness to pay attention to 7:41 level of seriousness to pay attention to different things because there's no 7:43 different things because there's no 7:43 different things because there's no forwardfacing component of the immune 7:46 forwardfacing component of the immune 7:46 forwardfacing component of the immune system, right? We don't have immune 7:48 system, right? We don't have immune 7:48 system, right? We don't have immune sensing cells on our epidermis to like 7:51 sensing cells on our epidermis to like 7:51 sensing cells on our epidermis to like sense everything that's going on in the 7:53 sense everything that's going on in the 7:53 sense everything that's going on in the air. They use the microbiome as a way of 7:57 air. They use the microbiome as a way of 7:57 air. They use the microbiome as a way of translating environmental information. 8:00 translating environmental information. 8:00 translating environmental information. So the relationship I explained between 8:03 So the relationship I explained between 8:03 So the relationship I explained between the immune cell, the immune system and 8:04 the immune cell, the immune system and 8:04 the immune cell, the immune system and the microbiome is that the microbiome 8:07 the microbiome is that the microbiome 8:07 the microbiome is that the microbiome are the eyes and ears of the immune 8:09 are the eyes and ears of the immune 8:09 are the eyes and ears of the immune system. Um they train, they're the 8:12 system. Um they train, they're the 8:12 system. Um they train, they're the neighborhood watch, if you will, for the 8:14 neighborhood watch, if you will, for the 8:14 neighborhood watch, if you will, for the immune system, right? Um a a great 8:17 immune system, right? Um a a great 8:17 immune system, right? Um a a great analogy is if if you think about um the 8:21 analogy is if if you think about um the 8:21 analogy is if if you think about um the role of the immune system, it's a very 8:22 role of the immune system, it's a very 8:22 role of the immune system, it's a very very difficult role. If I were to be a 8:25 very difficult role. If I were to be a 8:25 very difficult role. If I were to be a cell in a body, I wouldn't want to be an 8:27 cell in a body, I wouldn't want to be an 8:27 cell in a body, I wouldn't want to be an immune cell, right? It's it's a massive 8:29 immune cell, right? It's it's a massive 8:29 immune cell, right? It's it's a massive job. Um so if you think about one of 8:31 job. Um so if you think about one of 8:31 job. Um so if you think about one of your like so sentinel immune cells that 8:33 your like so sentinel immune cells that 8:33 your like so sentinel immune cells that are circulating around so take a 8:36 are circulating around so take a 8:36 are circulating around so take a macroofase or dendritic cell that has to 8:38 macroofase or dendritic cell that has to 8:38 macroofase or dendritic cell that has to circulate around and find dangers, 8:41 circulate around and find dangers, 8:41 circulate around and find dangers, right? A lot of the dangers they 8:42 right? A lot of the dangers they 8:42 right? A lot of the dangers they encounter are going to be microbial 8:44 encounter are going to be microbial 8:44 encounter are going to be microbial dangers that things that they have to 8:46 dangers that things that they have to 8:46 dangers that things that they have to deal with or or or toxins uh and 8:49 deal with or or or toxins uh and 8:49 deal with or or or toxins uh and neutralize them or microbial byproducts 8:51 neutralize them or microbial byproducts 8:51 neutralize them or microbial byproducts like in the case of mold toxins, right? 8:53 like in the case of mold toxins, right? 8:53 like in the case of mold toxins, right? So they have to identify all of these 8:55 So they have to identify all of these 8:55 So they have to identify all of these things, but they're doing that in a sea 8:57 things, but they're doing that in a sea 8:57 things, but they're doing that in a sea of trillions of other microbes and all 9:00 of trillions of other microbes and all 9:00 of trillions of other microbes and all of their byproducts that they kick out, 9:02 of their byproducts that they kick out, 9:02 of their byproducts that they kick out, right? So, so the analogy there to 9:04 right? So, so the analogy there to 9:04 right? So, so the analogy there to really put it in perspective for people 9:06 really put it in perspective for people 9:06 really put it in perspective for people to understand what the immune system has 9:09 to understand what the immune system has 9:09 to understand what the immune system has to do and why they cannot do it without 9:10 to do and why they cannot do it without 9:10 to do and why they cannot do it without the microbiome is imagine there's a 9:13 the microbiome is imagine there's a 9:13 the microbiome is imagine there's a stadium and there's a big concert in a 9:15 stadium and there's a big concert in a 9:15 stadium and there's a big concert in a stadium, right? So, there's 200,000 9:18 stadium, right? So, there's 200,000 9:18 stadium, right? So, there's 200,000 people in this stadium. Uh, and it's a 9:21 people in this stadium. Uh, and it's a 9:21 people in this stadium. Uh, and it's a it's a massive say it's Taylor Swift 9:23 it's a massive say it's Taylor Swift 9:23 it's a massive say it's Taylor Swift because she's the only one that can fill 9:24 because she's the only one that can fill 9:24 because she's the only one that can fill a stadium with 200,000 people. Um, so 9:27 a stadium with 200,000 people. Um, so 9:27 a stadium with 200,000 people. Um, so let's say there's a concert 200,000 9:29 let's say there's a concert 200,000 9:29 let's say there's a concert 200,000 people. you know that there's some 9:31 people. you know that there's some 9:31 people. you know that there's some intelligence out there that out of that 9:33 intelligence out there that out of that 9:33 intelligence out there that out of that 200,000 there are five people that are 9:37 200,000 there are five people that are 9:37 200,000 there are five people that are intending on causing trouble and causing 9:39 intending on causing trouble and causing 9:39 intending on causing trouble and causing harm, right? So 195 199,9 9:44 harm, right? So 195 199,9 9:44 harm, right? So 195 199,9 you know [clears throat] 95 are okay, 9:46 you know [clears throat] 95 are okay, 9:46 you know [clears throat] 95 are okay, but you've got five people now. They 9:48 but you've got five people now. They 9:48 but you've got five people now. They look very similar to everyone else. They 9:50 look very similar to everyone else. They 9:50 look very similar to everyone else. They all address relatively similar and and 9:52 all address relatively similar and and 9:52 all address relatively similar and and they're all humans and you are the lone 9:54 they're all humans and you are the lone 9:54 they're all humans and you are the lone security guard. How do you find those 9:57 security guard. How do you find those 9:57 security guard. How do you find those five people? Right. and and the these 9:59 five people? Right. and and the these 9:59 five people? Right. and and the these numbers are very specific. And the 10:02 numbers are very specific. And the 10:02 numbers are very specific. And the reason those numbers are specific is 10:03 reason those numbers are specific is 10:03 reason those numbers are specific is because it's a 200,000 to1 ratio of 10:08 because it's a 200,000 to1 ratio of 10:08 because it's a 200,000 to1 ratio of circulating immune cells to microbes in 10:11 circulating immune cells to microbes in 10:11 circulating immune cells to microbes in your mucosa and in the body, right? So 10:15 your mucosa and in the body, right? So 10:15 your mucosa and in the body, right? So for every one immune cell that's trying 10:17 for every one immune cell that's trying 10:17 for every one immune cell that's trying to protect you from microbes and 10:19 to protect you from microbes and 10:19 to protect you from microbes and microbial byproducts and all of that 10:21 microbial byproducts and all of that 10:21 microbial byproducts and all of that stuff, you've got 200,000 microbes, 10:23 stuff, you've got 200,000 microbes, 10:23 stuff, you've got 200,000 microbes, right? So, the only way you as the lone 10:26 right? So, the only way you as the lone 10:26 right? So, the only way you as the lone security guard in that stadium can find 10:29 security guard in that stadium can find 10:29 security guard in that stadium can find the five potential uh people that are 10:32 the five potential uh people that are 10:32 the five potential uh people that are trying to cause harm is if the other uh 10:35 trying to cause harm is if the other uh 10:35 trying to cause harm is if the other uh 99.5% 10:37 99.5% 10:37 99.5% of the people are on your side and are 10:39 of the people are on your side and are 10:39 of the people are on your side and are radioed into you. And if they see 10:42 radioed into you. And if they see 10:42 radioed into you. And if they see anything suspicious, they call you and 10:44 anything suspicious, they call you and 10:44 anything suspicious, they call you and tell you exactly where it is. Right? 10:46 tell you exactly where it is. Right? 10:46 tell you exactly where it is. Right? That's the only way is if everyone else 10:48 That's the only way is if everyone else 10:48 That's the only way is if everyone else is on your side and working and diligent 10:51 is on your side and working and diligent 10:51 is on your side and working and diligent and looking out for something abnormal. 10:54 and looking out for something abnormal. 10:54 and looking out for something abnormal. So that's exactly what's happening with 10:56 So that's exactly what's happening with 10:56 So that's exactly what's happening with your commensal organisms and the immune 10:59 your commensal organisms and the immune 10:59 your commensal organisms and the immune system. The commensal organisms are 11:01 system. The commensal organisms are 11:02 system. The commensal organisms are everywhere all the time, right? They see 11:05 everywhere all the time, right? They see 11:05 everywhere all the time, right? They see everything coming in. They have a 11:08 everything coming in. They have a 11:08 everything coming in. They have a certain degree of innate knowledge of 11:09 certain degree of innate knowledge of 11:09 certain degree of innate knowledge of what's normal and what's not normal in 11:11 what's normal and what's not normal in 11:12 what's normal and what's not normal in that environment because microbes adapt 11:14 that environment because microbes adapt 11:14 that environment because microbes adapt much faster than our own cells do. 11:16 much faster than our own cells do. 11:16 much faster than our own cells do. Right? Their genetic changes occur much 11:18 Right? Their genetic changes occur much 11:18 Right? Their genetic changes occur much faster than our genetic changes. And as 11:21 faster than our genetic changes. And as 11:21 faster than our genetic changes. And as a result of that, they have become the 11:22 a result of that, they have become the 11:22 a result of that, they have become the neighborhood watch where they can alert 11:25 neighborhood watch where they can alert 11:25 neighborhood watch where they can alert the immune system to anything that looks 11:27 the immune system to anything that looks 11:28 the immune system to anything that looks unusual, 11:29 unusual, 11:29 unusual, right? And and a and a perfect example 11:31 right? And and a and a perfect example 11:31 right? And and a and a perfect example of that is in CO, right? We all knew we 11:35 of that is in CO, right? We all knew we 11:35 of that is in CO, right? We all knew we started seeing the statistics that 11:37 started seeing the statistics that 11:37 started seeing the statistics that certain people had way higher risk of of 11:41 certain people had way higher risk of of 11:41 certain people had way higher risk of of uh um you know really bad infection or 11:44 uh um you know really bad infection or 11:44 uh um you know really bad infection or even mortality with COVID. Right? So if 11:45 even mortality with COVID. Right? So if 11:46 even mortality with COVID. Right? So if you took for example a 40year-old with 11:48 you took for example a 40year-old with 11:48 you took for example a 40year-old with diabetic with diabetes and a 40-year-old 11:50 diabetic with diabetes and a 40-year-old 11:50 diabetic with diabetes and a 40-year-old without diabetes, the 40-year-old with 11:52 without diabetes, the 40-year-old with 11:52 without diabetes, the 40-year-old with diabetes had 10 times higher risk of 11:55 diabetes had 10 times higher risk of 11:55 diabetes had 10 times higher risk of mortality and morbidity with COVID 11:57 mortality and morbidity with COVID 11:57 mortality and morbidity with COVID versus the 40-year-old without it. 11:58 versus the 40-year-old without it. 11:58 versus the 40-year-old without it. Right? And it wasn't their blood sugar 12:00 Right? And it wasn't their blood sugar 12:00 Right? And it wasn't their blood sugar issue or blood sugar management. It 12:02 issue or blood sugar management. It 12:02 issue or blood sugar management. It actually, as it turns out, was a changes 12:04 actually, as it turns out, was a changes 12:04 actually, as it turns out, was a changes in that 40-year-old with diabetes's 12:06 in that 40-year-old with diabetes's 12:06 in that 40-year-old with diabetes's microbiome. H and this was beautifully 12:09 microbiome. H and this was beautifully 12:09 microbiome. H and this was beautifully mapped out by um a researcher at 12:13 mapped out by um a researcher at 12:13 mapped out by um a researcher at University College Cork called Liam 12:15 University College Cork called Liam 12:15 University College Cork called Liam Mahoney. Um what what he did was he was 12:18 Mahoney. Um what what he did was he was 12:18 Mahoney. Um what what he did was he was able to take hundreds and hundreds of 12:20 able to take hundreds and hundreds of 12:20 able to take hundreds and hundreds of thousands of cases of COVID and then map 12:23 thousands of cases of COVID and then map 12:23 thousands of cases of COVID and then map the microbiomes and associated the 12:26 the microbiomes and associated the 12:26 the microbiomes and associated the microbiome mapping to the outcome that 12:28 microbiome mapping to the outcome that 12:28 microbiome mapping to the outcome that the individual had. And then as a result 12:31 the individual had. And then as a result 12:31 the individual had. And then as a result of that accuracy, they were then also 12:34 of that accuracy, they were then also 12:34 of that accuracy, they were then also able to get blind samples of the 12:37 able to get blind samples of the 12:37 able to get blind samples of the microbiome of individuals that were 12:38 microbiome of individuals that were 12:38 microbiome of individuals that were exposed to COVID and could predict with 12:42 exposed to COVID and could predict with 12:42 exposed to COVID and could predict with a 98% certainty whether that individual 12:45 a 98% certainty whether that individual 12:45 a 98% certainty whether that individual got hospitalized or even died from COVID 12:47 got hospitalized or even died from COVID 12:48 got hospitalized or even died from COVID just from looking at their microbiome. 12:49 just from looking at their microbiome. 12:49 just from looking at their microbiome. Right? 12:50 Right? 12:50 Right? >> Wow. 12:50 >> Wow. 12:50 >> Wow. >> They were able to see the pathobbiome. 12:52 >> They were able to see the pathobbiome. 12:52 >> They were able to see the pathobbiome. So when someone's gut microbiome is 12:54 So when someone's gut microbiome is 12:54 So when someone's gut microbiome is dysfunctional, it becomes very easy to 12:57 dysfunctional, it becomes very easy to 12:57 dysfunctional, it becomes very easy to see how their immune system loses that 13:00 see how their immune system loses that 13:00 see how their immune system loses that communication, right? You you don't have 13:02 communication, right? You you don't have 13:02 communication, right? You you don't have all of those people in that stadium 13:04 all of those people in that stadium 13:04 all of those people in that stadium talking to you. So if a little virus 13:06 talking to you. So if a little virus 13:06 talking to you. So if a little virus shows up way over here and your immune 13:09 shows up way over here and your immune 13:09 shows up way over here and your immune cells aren't paying attention to it, it 13:11 cells aren't paying attention to it, it 13:11 cells aren't paying attention to it, it has a much higher chance of 13:13 has a much higher chance of 13:13 has a much higher chance of proliferating, infecting, causing more 13:15 proliferating, infecting, causing more 13:16 proliferating, infecting, causing more damage before the immune system ever 13:18 damage before the immune system ever 13:18 damage before the immune system ever notices it, right? because the 13:20 notices it, right? because the 13:20 notices it, right? because the commensiles around it aren't signaling 13:22 commensiles around it aren't signaling 13:22 commensiles around it aren't signaling to the immune system that hey there's 13:24 to the immune system that hey there's 13:24 to the immune system that hey there's something happening here. We need you to 13:25 something happening here. We need you to 13:25 something happening here. We need you to come here and pay attention to it. 13:27 come here and pay attention to it. 13:27 come here and pay attention to it. Right. 13:27 Right. 13:27 Right. >> Right. 13:28 >> Right. 13:28 >> Right. >> So that's just one layer. What I just 13:31 >> So that's just one layer. What I just 13:31 >> So that's just one layer. What I just talked about is just one layer of why 13:33 talked about is just one layer of why 13:33 talked about is just one layer of why the microbiome is so important for the 13:35 the microbiome is so important for the 13:35 the microbiome is so important for the immune system and your immune system 13:36 immune system and your immune system 13:36 immune system and your immune system would cease to function without the 13:38 would cease to function without the 13:38 would cease to function without the microbiome. And studies have been done 13:40 microbiome. And studies have been done 13:40 microbiome. And studies have been done on this where they take no biotic mice. 13:42 on this where they take no biotic mice. 13:42 on this where they take no biotic mice. These are mice that have are are raised 13:45 These are mice that have are are raised 13:45 These are mice that have are are raised without a microbiome. 13:47 without a microbiome. 13:47 without a microbiome. um and and they have all of their immune 13:49 um and and they have all of their immune 13:49 um and and they have all of their immune components, right? They have their T- 13:50 components, right? They have their T- 13:50 components, right? They have their T- cells and B cells and macrofasages and 13:52 cells and B cells and macrofasages and 13:52 cells and B cells and macrofasages and dendritic cells. They have everything, 13:54 dendritic cells. They have everything, 13:54 dendritic cells. They have everything, but their immune and then they inject 13:56 but their immune and then they inject 13:56 but their immune and then they inject these mice with a virus and their immune 13:59 these mice with a virus and their immune 13:59 these mice with a virus and their immune system literally just sits there and
Gut Health, Anxiety, and Endotoxemia 14:01 system literally just sits there and 14:01 system literally just sits there and watches, right? It does nothing. It 14:04 watches, right? It does nothing. It 14:04 watches, right? It does nothing. It doesn't it doesn't address the virus at 14:06 doesn't it doesn't address the virus at 14:06 doesn't it doesn't address the virus at all. The virus just infects and kills 14:08 all. The virus just infects and kills 14:08 all. The virus just infects and kills the mouse 14:08 the mouse 14:08 the mouse >> micro. Yeah. 14:10 >> micro. Yeah. 14:10 >> micro. Yeah. >> Yes. Yes. So, I think that's really 14:13 >> Yes. Yes. So, I think that's really 14:13 >> Yes. Yes. So, I think that's really going to hit home for many many people 14:15 going to hit home for many many people 14:15 going to hit home for many many people in my community who has who have 14:19 in my community who has who have 14:19 in my community who has who have disregulated immune systems by biotoxin 14:22 disregulated immune systems by biotoxin 14:22 disregulated immune systems by biotoxin loads for sure. And how the microbiome 14:24 loads for sure. And how the microbiome 14:24 loads for sure. And how the microbiome is really training that tolerance versus 14:27 is really training that tolerance versus 14:27 is really training that tolerance versus the reactivity. And the other piece 14:29 the reactivity. And the other piece 14:29 the reactivity. And the other piece that's really huge for people is the gut 14:31 that's really huge for people is the gut 14:31 that's really huge for people is the gut brain axis and how the stress and the 14:34 brain axis and how the stress and the 14:34 brain axis and how the stress and the fight or flight that kind of goes with 14:37 fight or flight that kind of goes with 14:37 fight or flight that kind of goes with the mold and environmental toxin 14:39 the mold and environmental toxin 14:39 the mold and environmental toxin exposure and just the whole experience 14:41 exposure and just the whole experience 14:41 exposure and just the whole experience of that and how the gut modulating and 14:44 of that and how the gut modulating and 14:44 of that and how the gut modulating and sort of biohacking the gut can actually 14:46 sort of biohacking the gut can actually 14:46 sort of biohacking the gut can actually help with that as well. Can you speak to 14:48 help with that as well. Can you speak to 14:48 help with that as well. Can you speak to that too? 14:49 that too? 14:49 that too? >> Yeah, it's it's actually one of the most 14:51 >> Yeah, it's it's actually one of the most 14:51 >> Yeah, it's it's actually one of the most powerful tools you can have against uh 14:54 powerful tools you can have against uh 14:54 powerful tools you can have against uh anxiety, depression, and cognitive 14:57 anxiety, depression, and cognitive 14:57 anxiety, depression, and cognitive dysfunction. Right. So um there was a 14:59 dysfunction. Right. So um there was a 14:59 dysfunction. Right. So um there was a study called the Netherlands study on uh 15:01 study called the Netherlands study on uh 15:01 study called the Netherlands study on uh the Netherlands study on anxiety and 15:03 the Netherlands study on anxiety and 15:03 the Netherlands study on anxiety and depression. um with the continuous and 15:06 depression. um with the continuous and 15:06 depression. um with the continuous and and significant increase in prevalence 15:08 and significant increase in prevalence 15:08 and significant increase in prevalence of anxiety and depression in in the 15:11 of anxiety and depression in in the 15:11 of anxiety and depression in in the first world countries um you know some 15:13 first world countries um you know some 15:13 first world countries um you know some countries with nationalized health care 15:15 countries with nationalized health care 15:15 countries with nationalized health care systems they go let's do a countrywide 15:18 systems they go let's do a countrywide 15:18 systems they go let's do a countrywide investigation of what in the world is 15:20 investigation of what in the world is 15:20 investigation of what in the world is happening so that we can understand this 15:22 happening so that we can understand this 15:22 happening so that we can understand this problem right because of course they're 15:23 problem right because of course they're 15:23 problem right because of course they're spending a lot of their GDP on on 15:26 spending a lot of their GDP on on 15:26 spending a lot of their GDP on on managing these issues and so the the 15:29 managing these issues and so the the 15:29 managing these issues and so the the country of Netherlands saw this as a big 15:31 country of Netherlands saw this as a big 15:31 country of Netherlands saw this as a big problem so they initiated a 9-year long 15:33 problem so they initiated a 9-year long 15:33 problem so they initiated a 9-year long study 15:34 study 15:34 study to to um identify people with anxiety, 15:38 to to um identify people with anxiety, 15:38 to to um identify people with anxiety, depression, and then and then they 15:39 depression, and then and then they 15:39 depression, and then and then they followed them for 9 years. They did many 15:42 followed them for 9 years. They did many 15:42 followed them for 9 years. They did many different interventions and all that. 15:43 different interventions and all that. 15:43 different interventions and all that. They didn't control the interventions, 15:45 They didn't control the interventions, 15:45 They didn't control the interventions, but then they also looked at all of 15:47 but then they also looked at all of 15:47 but then they also looked at all of these biomarkers. Uh and they were 15:49 these biomarkers. Uh and they were 15:49 these biomarkers. Uh and they were looking for the biomarkers that were the 15:51 looking for the biomarkers that were the 15:51 looking for the biomarkers that were the most predictive of having uh anxiety and 15:56 most predictive of having uh anxiety and 15:56 most predictive of having uh anxiety and depression, severity of anxiety and 15:57 depression, severity of anxiety and 15:57 depression, severity of anxiety and depression, and onset of anxiety and 15:59 depression, and onset of anxiety and 15:59 depression, and onset of anxiety and depression. So, they looked at all kinds 16:00 depression. So, they looked at all kinds 16:00 depression. So, they looked at all kinds of stuff, right? all these inflammatory 16:02 of stuff, right? all these inflammatory 16:02 of stuff, right? all these inflammatory markers and all kinds of metabolic 16:03 markers and all kinds of metabolic 16:04 markers and all kinds of metabolic markers and so on. The one marker that 16:06 markers and so on. The one marker that 16:06 markers and so on. The one marker that they found to be the most predictive of 16:09 they found to be the most predictive of 16:09 they found to be the most predictive of the presence of anxiety and depression 16:10 the presence of anxiety and depression 16:10 the presence of anxiety and depression was something called LPS, 16:12 was something called LPS, 16:12 was something called LPS, lipopolysaccharide. 16:13 lipopolysaccharide. 16:13 lipopolysaccharide. Right? Lipopolyaccharide is a component 16:16 Right? Lipopolyaccharide is a component 16:16 Right? Lipopolyaccharide is a component of a gram negative bacteria and about 16:18 of a gram negative bacteria and about 16:18 of a gram negative bacteria and about say half your bacteria in your 16:20 say half your bacteria in your 16:20 say half your bacteria in your microbiome are gram negative. So you've 16:21 microbiome are gram negative. So you've 16:21 microbiome are gram negative. So you've got about half the bacteria in your gut 16:24 got about half the bacteria in your gut 16:24 got about half the bacteria in your gut making this and this LPS compound. Uh so 16:27 making this and this LPS compound. Uh so 16:27 making this and this LPS compound. Uh so it's generated in your gut all the time 16:29 it's generated in your gut all the time 16:29 it's generated in your gut all the time and in your lining of your gut it's 16:31 and in your lining of your gut it's 16:31 and in your lining of your gut it's perfectly fine but if it leaks through 16:34 perfectly fine but if it leaks through 16:34 perfectly fine but if it leaks through and ends up in circulation it becomes a 16:36 and ends up in circulation it becomes a 16:36 and ends up in circulation it becomes a big problem. So, it's a great marker for 16:39 big problem. So, it's a great marker for 16:39 big problem. So, it's a great marker for leaky gut, right? So, what the what the 16:42 leaky gut, right? So, what the what the 16:42 leaky gut, right? So, what the what the researchers showed over this 9-year 16:44 researchers showed over this 9-year 16:44 researchers showed over this 9-year study was that um as long as people had 16:47 study was that um as long as people had 16:47 study was that um as long as people had elevated levels of this LPS in 16:50 elevated levels of this LPS in 16:50 elevated levels of this LPS in circulation, meaning it's leaking 16:51 circulation, meaning it's leaking 16:51 circulation, meaning it's leaking through um then they had anxiety and 16:54 through um then they had anxiety and 16:54 through um then they had anxiety and depression, right? And if they did 16:56 depression, right? And if they did 16:56 depression, right? And if they did something right, they didn't control the 16:58 something right, they didn't control the 16:58 something right, they didn't control the interventions, but over that 9-year 17:00 interventions, but over that 9-year 17:00 interventions, but over that 9-year period, those individuals that saw a 17:02 period, those individuals that saw a 17:02 period, those individuals that saw a decrease in that LPS, their anxiety and 17:05 decrease in that LPS, their anxiety and 17:05 decrease in that LPS, their anxiety and depression went away. For those indivi 17:07 depression went away. For those indivi 17:07 depression went away. For those indivi individuals that saw an increase in the 17:09 individuals that saw an increase in the 17:09 individuals that saw an increase in the LPS, their anxiety and depression got 17:12 LPS, their anxiety and depression got 17:12 LPS, their anxiety and depression got more severe. For those individuals that 17:15 more severe. For those individuals that 17:15 more severe. For those individuals that were kind of baseline that didn't have 17:16 were kind of baseline that didn't have 17:16 were kind of baseline that didn't have too much anxiety and depression, if 17:18 too much anxiety and depression, if 17:18 too much anxiety and depression, if their LPS went up, their anxiety got 17:20 their LPS went up, their anxiety got 17:20 their LPS went up, their anxiety got really severe. And in fact, they could 17:22 really severe. And in fact, they could 17:22 really severe. And in fact, they could then use that as a predictive model. 17:24 then use that as a predictive model. 17:24 then use that as a predictive model. They can then predict someone's severity 17:27 They can then predict someone's severity 17:27 They can then predict someone's severity of anxiety and depression and presence 17:29 of anxiety and depression and presence 17:29 of anxiety and depression and presence of anxiety and depression by just 17:31 of anxiety and depression by just 17:31 of anxiety and depression by just looking at LPS in circulation. Right? So 17:34 looking at LPS in circulation. Right? So 17:34 looking at LPS in circulation. Right? So this is a core indicator of what's 17:38 this is a core indicator of what's 17:38 this is a core indicator of what's driving your risk of anxiety and 17:40 driving your risk of anxiety and 17:40 driving your risk of anxiety and depression. The presence of LPS in 17:42 depression. The presence of LPS in 17:42 depression. The presence of LPS in circulation means you have leaky gut. 17:44 circulation means you have leaky gut. 17:44 circulation means you have leaky gut. The clinical term for that is 17:46 The clinical term for that is 17:46 The clinical term for that is endotoxmia, 17:48 endotoxmia, 17:48 endotoxmia, right? And so the so the presence of 17:50 right? And so the so the presence of 17:50 right? And so the so the presence of endotoxmia, a leaky gut means you're 17:54 endotoxmia, a leaky gut means you're 17:54 endotoxmia, a leaky gut means you're going to be much more susceptible to 17:55 going to be much more susceptible to 17:55 going to be much more susceptible to anxiety and depression. We could talk 17:57 anxiety and depression. We could talk 17:58 anxiety and depression. We could talk about why LPS creates anxiety and 18:00 about why LPS creates anxiety and 18:00 about why LPS creates anxiety and depression. There's a number of 18:01 depression. There's a number of 18:01 depression. There's a number of mechanisms there, but I think the 18:03 mechanisms there, but I think the 18:03 mechanisms there, but I think the underlying message is that a 18:06 underlying message is that a 18:06 underlying message is that a dysfunctional gut is the biggest driver 18:09 dysfunctional gut is the biggest driver 18:09 dysfunctional gut is the biggest driver of anxiety and depression, right? So, 18:12 of anxiety and depression, right? So, 18:12 of anxiety and depression, right? So, somebody's been exposed to loads of 18:14 somebody's been exposed to loads of 18:14 somebody's been exposed to loads of toxins and mold and they've got a 18:16 toxins and mold and they've got a 18:16 toxins and mold and they've got a dysfunctional gut. Uh, and they've 18:18 dysfunctional gut. Uh, and they've 18:18 dysfunctional gut. Uh, and they've probably been doing things to try to 18:20 probably been doing things to try to 18:20 probably been doing things to try to cleanse themselves of the of these 18:22 cleanse themselves of the of these 18:22 cleanse themselves of the of these issues on their own. you know, they're 18:24 issues on their own. you know, they're 18:24 issues on their own. you know, they're finding things online and they're going 18:26 finding things online and they're going 18:26 finding things online and they're going through all these random detox protocols 18:28 through all these random detox protocols 18:28 through all these random detox protocols and all the many of them that can that 18:30 and all the many of them that can that 18:30 and all the many of them that can that can be harsh without working with the 18:32 can be harsh without working with the 18:32 can be harsh without working with the clinician. Um, they're probably causing 18:34 clinician. Um, they're probably causing 18:34 clinician. Um, they're probably causing more harm than good on their gut there, 18:37 more harm than good on their gut there, 18:37 more harm than good on their gut there, thereby continuously increasing their 18:38 thereby continuously increasing their 18:38 thereby continuously increasing their leaky gut uh and then making them much 18:42 leaky gut uh and then making them much 18:42 leaky gut uh and then making them much more susceptible to this anxiety and 18:43 more susceptible to this anxiety and 18:43 more susceptible to this anxiety and depression. So, they have to have to fix 18:46 depression. So, they have to have to fix 18:46 depression. So, they have to have to fix the lining of the gut. They have to stop 18:48 the lining of the gut. They have to stop 18:48 the lining of the gut. They have to stop that permeability in order to get 18:50 that permeability in order to get 18:50 that permeability in order to get control of that mood disorder. 18:52 control of that mood disorder. 18:52 control of that mood disorder. >> Yeah. I love that leaky gut is so much 18:55 >> Yeah. I love that leaky gut is so much 18:55 >> Yeah. I love that leaky gut is so much more than just zulin, but also these 18:58 more than just zulin, but also these 18:58 more than just zulin, but also these labs, you know, labs and endotoxmia 19:02 labs, you know, labs and endotoxmia 19:02 labs, you know, labs and endotoxmia markers and things like that. Sometimes 19:04 markers and things like that. Sometimes 19:04 markers and things like that. Sometimes someone could even look fine on standard 19:07 someone could even look fine on standard 19:07 someone could even look fine on standard labs. Just as a reminder for the 19:09 labs. Just as a reminder for the 19:09 labs. Just as a reminder for the audience, you know, functional labs like 19:11 audience, you know, functional labs like 19:11 audience, you know, functional labs like a gut testing can pick up on these sort 19:14 a gut testing can pick up on these sort 19:14 a gut testing can pick up on these sort of things, but standard labs sometimes 19:17 of things, but standard labs sometimes 19:17 of things, but standard labs sometimes will not. But yeah, we talk also about 19:20 will not. But yeah, we talk also about 19:20 will not. But yeah, we talk also about with the endotoxins, there can be that 19:22 with the endotoxins, there can be that 19:22 with the endotoxins, there can be that environmental exposure as well from 19:24 environmental exposure as well from 19:24 environmental exposure as well from bacteria and the environment and the 19:27 bacteria and the environment and the 19:27 bacteria and the environment and the gram negative bacteria putting off the 19:29 gram negative bacteria putting off the 19:29 gram negative bacteria putting off the endotoxins. But we have to remember that 19:33 endotoxins. But we have to remember that 19:33 endotoxins. But we have to remember that one of those constant sources of 19:35 one of those constant sources of 19:35 one of those constant sources of potential endotoxmia and LPS is your 19:39 potential endotoxmia and LPS is your 19:39 potential endotoxmia and LPS is your gut. It's it's inherent to the gut. So 19:43 gut. It's it's inherent to the gut. So 19:43 gut. It's it's inherent to the gut. So that just is underscoring the fact that 19:45 that just is underscoring the fact that 19:45 that just is underscoring the fact that that gut lining in the terrain is so 19:47 that gut lining in the terrain is so 19:47 that gut lining in the terrain is so important to to heal and that's why I 19:50 important to to heal and that's why I 19:50 important to to heal and that's why I really do that first even with clients 19:53 really do that first even with clients 19:53 really do that first even with clients before trying to do any kind of detox 19:56 before trying to do any kind of detox 19:56 before trying to do any kind of detox protocols. We work on stabilizing the 19:58 protocols. We work on stabilizing the 19:58 protocols. We work on stabilizing the gut lining. So and what are some of the
Five Pillars for Healing the Gut 20:02 gut lining. So and what are some of the 20:02 gut lining. So and what are some of the things or compounds or ingredients that 20:05 things or compounds or ingredients that 20:05 things or compounds or ingredients that are most useful to do that? 20:07 are most useful to do that? 20:07 are most useful to do that? >> Yeah. and and and it's great that you do 20:10 >> Yeah. and and and it's great that you do 20:10 >> Yeah. and and and it's great that you do that first because of course the gut 20:13 that first because of course the gut 20:13 that first because of course the gut also plays a significant role in the 20:15 also plays a significant role in the 20:15 also plays a significant role in the detox process in the body, right? And so 20:18 detox process in the body, right? And so 20:18 detox process in the body, right? And so if your gut is really dismantled and you 20:21 if your gut is really dismantled and you 20:21 if your gut is really dismantled and you start pushing a lot of detoxification, 20:24 start pushing a lot of detoxification, 20:24 start pushing a lot of detoxification, you can actually create even more 20:25 you can actually create even more 20:25 you can actually create even more issues. And so stabilizing the gut to a 20:29 issues. And so stabilizing the gut to a 20:29 issues. And so stabilizing the gut to a certain degree is a is a is a really 20:31 certain degree is a is a is a really 20:31 certain degree is a is a is a really smart thing to do. Um, for me there, you 20:35 smart thing to do. Um, for me there, you 20:35 smart thing to do. Um, for me there, you know, I I really look at I I boil it 20:37 know, I I really look at I I boil it 20:37 know, I I really look at I I boil it down to kind of five pillars. Um, 20:40 down to kind of five pillars. Um, 20:40 down to kind of five pillars. Um, because part of of improving the gut, 20:43 because part of of improving the gut, 20:43 because part of of improving the gut, which is a ecosystem, is a number of 20:47 which is a ecosystem, is a number of 20:47 which is a ecosystem, is a number of small decisions that accumulate to drive 20:50 small decisions that accumulate to drive 20:50 small decisions that accumulate to drive the ecosystem forward, right? Um, it's 20:52 the ecosystem forward, right? Um, it's 20:52 the ecosystem forward, right? Um, it's not going to be one or one one or two 20:54 not going to be one or one one or two 20:54 not going to be one or one one or two magical things. It's going to be uh a 20:56 magical things. It's going to be uh a 20:56 magical things. It's going to be uh a number of things that are kind of 20:57 number of things that are kind of 20:57 number of things that are kind of synergistic that work together to move 20:59 synergistic that work together to move 20:59 synergistic that work together to move the the ecosystem in the right 21:01 the the ecosystem in the right 21:01 the the ecosystem in the right direction. Um so when I'm you know 21:03 direction. Um so when I'm you know 21:04 direction. Um so when I'm you know teaching people about this when it's 21:05 teaching people about this when it's 21:06 teaching people about this when it's when it's consumers um I I do it as a 21:08 when it's consumers um I I do it as a 21:08 when it's consumers um I I do it as a five pillar systems when it's clinicians 21:10 five pillar systems when it's clinicians 21:10 five pillar systems when it's clinicians we get into much more in-depth u 21:13 we get into much more in-depth u 21:13 we get into much more in-depth u discussions about this but if we break 21:14 discussions about this but if we break 21:14 discussions about this but if we break it down into kind of five pillars of the 21:16 it down into kind of five pillars of the 21:16 it down into kind of five pillars of the things that you should be doing um you 21:19 things that you should be doing um you 21:19 things that you should be doing um you know pillar number one is food right so 21:22 know pillar number one is food right so 21:22 know pillar number one is food right so food moves the microbiome more so than 21:24 food moves the microbiome more so than 21:24 food moves the microbiome more so than almost anything. So what you eat really 21:26 almost anything. So what you eat really 21:26 almost anything. So what you eat really matters and and as much as you can based 21:29 matters and and as much as you can based 21:29 matters and and as much as you can based on your existing sensitivities and all 21:30 on your existing sensitivities and all 21:30 on your existing sensitivities and all that, you know, diversify your diet and 21:33 that, you know, diversify your diet and 21:33 that, you know, diversify your diet and get as much fiber and polyphenols in 21:36 get as much fiber and polyphenols in 21:36 get as much fiber and polyphenols in your system, right? Fiber is kind of the 21:39 your system, right? Fiber is kind of the 21:39 your system, right? Fiber is kind of the it's getting more popular, thank 21:40 it's getting more popular, thank 21:40 it's getting more popular, thank goodness. Uh but it's but it's a bit of 21:42 goodness. Uh but it's but it's a bit of 21:42 goodness. Uh but it's but it's a bit of an unsung hero in in our world, right? 21:46 an unsung hero in in our world, right? 21:46 an unsung hero in in our world, right? Um it it hasn't been sexy or that 21:48 Um it it hasn't been sexy or that 21:48 Um it it hasn't been sexy or that exciting to talk about fiber for the 21:50 exciting to talk about fiber for the 21:50 exciting to talk about fiber for the most part, right? It's not as as sexy as 21:52 most part, right? It's not as as sexy as 21:52 most part, right? It's not as as sexy as all these amazing peptides and all these 21:54 all these amazing peptides and all these 21:54 all these amazing peptides and all these space age things that people do. Uh but 21:57 space age things that people do. Uh but 21:57 space age things that people do. Uh but but you know if I were to tell people 21:59 but you know if I were to tell people 21:59 but you know if I were to tell people that hey I I have a pill I invented a 22:02 that hey I I have a pill I invented a 22:02 that hey I I have a pill I invented a pill that if you take it every day cuts 22:04 pill that if you take it every day cuts 22:04 pill that if you take it every day cuts your risk of dying from anything by 50%. 22:08 your risk of dying from anything by 50%. 22:08 your risk of dying from anything by 50%. Right? People would be would jump at the 22:10 Right? People would be would jump at the 22:10 Right? People would be would jump at the opportunity to buy this pill right and 22:12 opportunity to buy this pill right and 22:12 opportunity to buy this pill right and it would be a trillion dollar product 22:14 it would be a trillion dollar product 22:14 it would be a trillion dollar product because what else cuts your risk of 22:16 because what else cuts your risk of 22:16 because what else cuts your risk of dying from any disease by 50% almost? 22:19 dying from any disease by 50% almost? 22:19 dying from any disease by 50% almost? The only thing is fiber, right? So 22:21 The only thing is fiber, right? So 22:22 The only thing is fiber, right? So upwards of a million subjects, 22:23 upwards of a million subjects, 22:23 upwards of a million subjects, metaanalysis studies as as recent as 22:27 metaanalysis studies as as recent as 22:27 metaanalysis studies as as recent as 2021, 2022 has shown that for every 10 22:30 2021, 2022 has shown that for every 10 22:30 2021, 2022 has shown that for every 10 gram of fiber you add to your daily 22:32 gram of fiber you add to your daily 22:32 gram of fiber you add to your daily diet, you reduce your all-c cause 22:33 diet, you reduce your all-c cause 22:34 diet, you reduce your all-c cause mortality that's dying from anything by 22:36 mortality that's dying from anything by 22:36 mortality that's dying from anything by 10%. And that goes all the way up to 22:38 10%. And that goes all the way up to 22:38 10%. And that goes all the way up to almost 40 to 50 grams of fiber, 40 to 22:41 almost 40 to 50 grams of fiber, 40 to 22:41 almost 40 to 50 grams of fiber, 40 to 50% reduction in all cause mortality. 22:44 50% reduction in all cause mortality. 22:44 50% reduction in all cause mortality. Right? So we have that access. And why 22:47 Right? So we have that access. And why 22:47 Right? So we have that access. And why is that? I mean, we don't digest the 22:48 is that? I mean, we don't digest the 22:48 is that? I mean, we don't digest the fiber. we don't get any nutrition out of 22:50 fiber. we don't get any nutrition out of 22:50 fiber. we don't get any nutrition out of it. It's cuz it feeds the microbiome, 22:53 it. It's cuz it feeds the microbiome, 22:53 it. It's cuz it feeds the microbiome, right? Um it's and and not only does it 22:56 right? Um it's and and not only does it 22:56 right? Um it's and and not only does it feed the microbiome and helps this the 22:59 feed the microbiome and helps this the 22:59 feed the microbiome and helps this the bacteria, the right bacteria 23:00 bacteria, the right bacteria 23:00 bacteria, the right bacteria proliferate, it creates all of this 23:03 proliferate, it creates all of this 23:03 proliferate, it creates all of this metabolic byproducts like short- chain 23:05 metabolic byproducts like short- chain 23:05 metabolic byproducts like short- chain fatty acids and and so on, right? Which 23:08 fatty acids and and so on, right? Which 23:08 fatty acids and and so on, right? Which are very nourishing, which are very 23:10 are very nourishing, which are very 23:10 are very nourishing, which are very reparative of the lining of the gut of 23:12 reparative of the lining of the gut of 23:12 reparative of the lining of the gut of the microbiome. So polyphenols also very 23:15 the microbiome. So polyphenols also very 23:16 the microbiome. So polyphenols also very similar. They're also prebiotics. They 23:17 similar. They're also prebiotics. They 23:17 similar. They're also prebiotics. They also feed the microbiome. They also get 23:20 also feed the microbiome. They also get 23:20 also feed the microbiome. They also get converted into really important 23:22 converted into really important 23:22 converted into really important compounds like say urolithins, right? 23:24 compounds like say urolithins, right? 23:24 compounds like say urolithins, right? That that repair your mitochondria and 23:26 That that repair your mitochondria and 23:26 That that repair your mitochondria and do all these important things. So, so 23:28 do all these important things. So, so 23:28 do all these important things. So, so step one is uh food. You know, diversify 23:31 step one is uh food. You know, diversify 23:31 step one is uh food. You know, diversify your diet as much as you can. Add as 23:33 your diet as much as you can. Add as 23:33 your diet as much as you can. Add as much as you can fiber slowly and 23:35 much as you can fiber slowly and 23:35 much as you can fiber slowly and incrementally. You don't want to go from 23:37 incrementally. You don't want to go from 23:37 incrementally. You don't want to go from the 8 grams a day that an average 23:39 the 8 grams a day that an average 23:39 the 8 grams a day that an average American does to 50 tomorrow. You're 23:41 American does to 50 tomorrow. You're 23:41 American does to 50 tomorrow. You're going to be really pissed off. Um so, 23:43 going to be really pissed off. Um so, 23:43 going to be really pissed off. Um so, you want to go, you know, five grams a 23:45 you want to go, you know, five grams a 23:45 you want to go, you know, five grams a week. Just keep adding it up. Um so 23:47 week. Just keep adding it up. Um so 23:47 week. Just keep adding it up. Um so fiber and polyphenols the second part of 23:49 fiber and polyphenols the second part of 23:49 fiber and polyphenols the second part of it is stress management right so there 23:52 it is stress management right so there 23:52 it is stress management right so there was a 2015 publication in frontiers of 23:54 was a 2015 publication in frontiers of 23:54 was a 2015 publication in frontiers of immunology that talked about how stress 23:57 immunology that talked about how stress 23:57 immunology that talked about how stress induced endotoxmia that is leaky gut 24:00 induced endotoxmia that is leaky gut 24:00 induced endotoxmia that is leaky gut that comes about as a result of stress 24:03 that comes about as a result of stress 24:03 that comes about as a result of stress uh and I can explain all the mechanisms 24:05 uh and I can explain all the mechanisms 24:05 uh and I can explain all the mechanisms behind it but I'll I can I can tell you 24:07 behind it but I'll I can I can tell you 24:07 behind it but I'll I can I can tell you with a very high degree of confidence 24:09 with a very high degree of confidence 24:09 with a very high degree of confidence that stress is probably one of the 24:11 that stress is probably one of the 24:11 that stress is probably one of the biggest drivers of endotoxim leaky gut 24:14 biggest drivers of endotoxim leaky gut 24:14 biggest drivers of endotoxim leaky gut um and they showed that stress induced 24:17 um and they showed that stress induced 24:17 um and they showed that stress induced leaky gut was the number one cause of 24:19 leaky gut was the number one cause of 24:20 leaky gut was the number one cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. 24:23 mortality and morbidity worldwide. 24:23 mortality and morbidity worldwide. Right? Because here's the tie, right? So 24:25 Right? Because here's the tie, right? So 24:25 Right? Because here's the tie, right? So stress creates leaky gut and endotoxmia. 24:28 stress creates leaky gut and endotoxmia. 24:28 stress creates leaky gut and endotoxmia. What we talked about the LPS getting in 24:30 What we talked about the LPS getting in 24:30 What we talked about the LPS getting in to circulation that LPS getting into 24:33 to circulation that LPS getting into 24:33 to circulation that LPS getting into circulation is the number one driver of 24:35 circulation is the number one driver of 24:35 circulation is the number one driver of most chronic conditions. So anxiety, 24:37 most chronic conditions. So anxiety, 24:37 most chronic conditions. So anxiety, depression, Alzheimer's, uh dementia, um 24:41 depression, Alzheimer's, uh dementia, um 24:41 depression, Alzheimer's, uh dementia, um cardiovascular disease, diabetes, you 24:44 cardiovascular disease, diabetes, you 24:44 cardiovascular disease, diabetes, you know, even the American Diabetic 24:46 know, even the American Diabetic 24:46 know, even the American Diabetic Association has published that 24:47 Association has published that 24:47 Association has published that endotoxmia and the leaking in of LPS is 24:50 endotoxmia and the leaking in of LPS is 24:50 endotoxmia and the leaking in of LPS is the what they call the primary insult 24:52 the what they call the primary insult 24:52 the what they call the primary insult that starts the process of insulin 24:54 that starts the process of insulin 24:54 that starts the process of insulin resistance, right? Cancers, autoimmune 24:57 resistance, right? Cancers, autoimmune 24:57 resistance, right? Cancers, autoimmune conditions. So the vast majority of 24:59 conditions. So the vast majority of 24:59 conditions. So the vast majority of things that kill us from a disease 25:00 things that kill us from a disease 25:00 things that kill us from a disease perspective are enhanced significantly 25:03 perspective are enhanced significantly 25:03 perspective are enhanced significantly by that endotoxmia. 25:05 by that endotoxmia. 25:05 by that endotoxmia. And so managing stress is not just this 25:09 And so managing stress is not just this 25:09 And so managing stress is not just this kind of new age like you know uh um 25:12 kind of new age like you know uh um 25:12 kind of new age like you know uh um thing that it's it's a very serious part 25:16 thing that it's it's a very serious part 25:16 thing that it's it's a very serious part of any recovery process, right? And then 25:19 of any recovery process, right? And then 25:19 of any recovery process, right? And then the question maybe how do you manage 25:20 the question maybe how do you manage 25:20 the question maybe how do you manage stress? Well, there's tons of tools out 25:22 stress? Well, there's tons of tools out 25:22 stress? Well, there's tons of tools out there and I you know we could we could 25:23 there and I you know we could we could 25:24 there and I you know we could we could have a whole conversation about that, 25:25 have a whole conversation about that, 25:25 have a whole conversation about that, but uh I'm sure I'm sure you've 25:27 but uh I'm sure I'm sure you've 25:27 but uh I'm sure I'm sure you've addressed that in in your podcast many 25:29 addressed that in in your podcast many 25:29 addressed that in in your podcast many of times. And so so diet, stress 25:31 of times. And so so diet, stress 25:31 of times. And so so diet, stress management. The third one is more about 25:35 management. The third one is more about 25:35 management. The third one is more about um u lifestyle components that are 25:37 um u lifestyle components that are 25:37 um u lifestyle components that are critical to a healthy microbiome. So 25:39 critical to a healthy microbiome. So 25:39 critical to a healthy microbiome. So actually exercise and resistance 25:41 actually exercise and resistance 25:41 actually exercise and resistance training are both really important. So 25:43 training are both really important. So 25:43 training are both really important. So when I say exercise, I mean getting out 25:45 when I say exercise, I mean getting out 25:45 when I say exercise, I mean getting out there for walks, kind of zone to 25:47 there for walks, kind of zone to 25:47 there for walks, kind of zone to cardiovascular exercise. And then 25:49 cardiovascular exercise. And then 25:49 cardiovascular exercise. And then resistance training is also really 25:51 resistance training is also really 25:51 resistance training is also really important because um when you lift 25:53 important because um when you lift 25:53 important because um when you lift weights and you contract your muscles, 25:55 weights and you contract your muscles, 25:55 weights and you contract your muscles, they release chemical compounds called 25:57 they release chemical compounds called 25:57 they release chemical compounds called myioines. And these myioines actually 26:00 myioines. And these myioines actually 26:00 myioines. And these myioines actually have a direct impact on the gut 26:01 have a direct impact on the gut 26:01 have a direct impact on the gut microbiome and the lining of your gut. 26:03 microbiome and the lining of your gut. 26:03 microbiome and the lining of your gut. Right? So when you're stressed from 26:05 Right? So when you're stressed from 26:05 Right? So when you're stressed from pillar number two, one of the really 26:08 pillar number two, one of the really 26:08 pillar number two, one of the really easy things to do is go and s start 26:10 easy things to do is go and s start 26:10 easy things to do is go and s start doing burpees, right? I I I I give 26:13 doing burpees, right? I I I I give 26:13 doing burpees, right? I I I I give people this uh recommendation all the 26:15 people this uh recommendation all the 26:15 people this uh recommendation all the time uh is when you feel like when you 26:18 time uh is when you feel like when you 26:18 time uh is when you feel like when you feel that fight or flight coming on, 26:20 feel that fight or flight coming on, 26:20 feel that fight or flight coming on, right? Um, if you can, like let's say 26:23 right? Um, if you can, like let's say 26:23 right? Um, if you can, like let's say you're sitting in a car, so you can't 26:24 you're sitting in a car, so you can't 26:24 you're sitting in a car, so you can't just start doing burpees. Start tensing 26:26 just start doing burpees. Start tensing 26:26 just start doing burpees. Start tensing and releasing your muscles, right? Your 26:28 and releasing your muscles, right? Your 26:28 and releasing your muscles, right? Your larger muscles, your glutes, your quads, 26:31 larger muscles, your glutes, your quads, 26:31 larger muscles, your glutes, your quads, even you're just sitting there like 26:32 even you're just sitting there like 26:32 even you're just sitting there like contract them, hold them, and release 26:34 contract them, hold them, and release 26:34 contract them, hold them, and release them, right? If you're in your office or 26:36 them, right? If you're in your office or 26:36 them, right? If you're in your office or a place where you can do it, just do a 26:37 a place where you can do it, just do a 26:37 a place where you can do it, just do a wall sit, right? Uh, till your till your 26:40 wall sit, right? Uh, till your till your 26:40 wall sit, right? Uh, till your till your muscles burn. Um, or do push-ups or 26:43 muscles burn. Um, or do push-ups or 26:43 muscles burn. Um, or do push-ups or burpees. There's a direct connection. 26:45 burpees. There's a direct connection. 26:45 burpees. There's a direct connection. Number one, because fight or flight is 26:48 Number one, because fight or flight is 26:48 Number one, because fight or flight is increasing blood profusion, 26:50 increasing blood profusion, 26:50 increasing blood profusion, catakolamines, all of these things to 26:52 catakolamines, all of these things to 26:52 catakolamines, all of these things to get you to fight or flee, right? Um, so 26:55 get you to fight or flee, right? Um, so 26:55 get you to fight or flee, right? Um, so your body is built up to move at that 26:58 your body is built up to move at that 26:58 your body is built up to move at that point, right? And one of the ways to 27:00 point, right? And one of the ways to 27:00 point, right? And one of the ways to exhaust that is to actually do some sort 27:03 exhaust that is to actually do some sort 27:03 exhaust that is to actually do some sort of movement, right? You're tricking your 27:04 of movement, right? You're tricking your 27:04 of movement, right? You're tricking your mind into going, "Okay, I'm fleeing. I'm 27:06 mind into going, "Okay, I'm fleeing. I'm 27:06 mind into going, "Okay, I'm fleeing. I'm fighting." And then now I need to come 27:08 fighting." And then now I need to come 27:08 fighting." And then now I need to come down from it once you stop the movement, 27:10 down from it once you stop the movement, 27:10 down from it once you stop the movement, right? Um, so that's an innate uh 27:14 right? Um, so that's an innate uh 27:14 right? Um, so that's an innate uh programming that that gets you to go cuz 27:16 programming that that gets you to go cuz 27:16 programming that that gets you to go cuz if you just sit there in it 27:18 if you just sit there in it 27:18 if you just sit there in it >> and you just keep freaking out. Exactly. 27:20 >> and you just keep freaking out. Exactly. 27:20 >> and you just keep freaking out. Exactly. Keep print out. Your body is going, 27:21 Keep print out. Your body is going, 27:22 Keep print out. Your body is going, "Okay, we're not fighting or fleeing." 27:23 "Okay, we're not fighting or fleeing." 27:23 "Okay, we're not fighting or fleeing." Like, "What's going on?" Right. Cuz your 27:25 Like, "What's going on?" Right. Cuz your 27:25 Like, "What's going on?" Right. Cuz your body thinks you're in danger. And so if 27:28 body thinks you're in danger. And so if 27:28 body thinks you're in danger. And so if you burn off some of that energy, it 27:30 you burn off some of that energy, it 27:30 you burn off some of that energy, it actually thinks you ran away from 27:32 actually thinks you ran away from 27:32 actually thinks you ran away from whatever the danger is and now you're 27:33 whatever the danger is and now you're 27:33 whatever the danger is and now you're coming down from it, right? It 27:34 coming down from it, right? It 27:34 coming down from it, right? It >> resolves it. Yeah, 27:35 >> resolves it. Yeah, 27:35 >> resolves it. Yeah, >> it resolves it. So that's one of the 27:37 >> it resolves it. So that's one of the 27:37 >> it resolves it. So that's one of the things. And then the other aspect of it 27:39 things. And then the other aspect of it 27:39 things. And then the other aspect of it is that those muscle contractions 27:42 is that those muscle contractions 27:42 is that those muscle contractions release those mioines and those myioines 27:44 release those mioines and those myioines 27:44 release those mioines and those myioines have a calming effect on your body. 27:46 have a calming effect on your body. 27:46 have a calming effect on your body. Again, that's part of counteracting the 27:48 Again, that's part of counteracting the 27:48 Again, that's part of counteracting the fight orflight response, right? Um so so 27:52 fight orflight response, right? Um so so 27:52 fight orflight response, right? Um so so exercise um is is one of those key 27:55 exercise um is is one of those key 27:55 exercise um is is one of those key components. And then sleep is another 27:57 components. And then sleep is another 27:57 components. And then sleep is another key component. Your microbiome is a 27:59 key component. Your microbiome is a 27:59 key component. Your microbiome is a works on a dural system, meaning it 28:01 works on a dural system, meaning it 28:01 works on a dural system, meaning it works on a 24-hour clock just like our 28:03 works on a 24-hour clock just like our 28:03 works on a 24-hour clock just like our body does. And there's a lot of 28:05 body does. And there's a lot of 28:05 body does. And there's a lot of housekeeping work that has to happen at 28:07 housekeeping work that has to happen at 28:07 housekeeping work that has to happen at night when you're sleeping to increase 28:08 night when you're sleeping to increase 28:08 night when you're sleeping to increase the diversity of your microbiome. So if 28:11 the diversity of your microbiome. So if 28:11 the diversity of your microbiome. So if you don't sleep adequately, you're 28:12 you don't sleep adequately, you're 28:12 you don't sleep adequately, you're actually shortening that housekeeping 28:14 actually shortening that housekeeping 28:14 actually shortening that housekeeping time and you don't get all the repair 28:16 time and you don't get all the repair 28:16 time and you don't get all the repair that's supposed to occur in your gut. 28:19 that's supposed to occur in your gut. 28:19 that's supposed to occur in your gut. Now that repair also extends beyond your 28:21 Now that repair also extends beyond your 28:21 Now that repair also extends beyond your gut. For example, your gut produces 28:23 gut. For example, your gut produces 28:23 gut. For example, your gut produces something called BDNF, brain derived 28:25 something called BDNF, brain derived 28:25 something called BDNF, brain derived neurotropic factor, which is really 28:27 neurotropic factor, which is really 28:27 neurotropic factor, which is really important because that BDNF repairs your 28:30 important because that BDNF repairs your 28:30 important because that BDNF repairs your brain while you're sleeping, right? Cuz 28:32 brain while you're sleeping, right? Cuz 28:32 brain while you're sleeping, right? Cuz throughout the day, your brain went 28:34 throughout the day, your brain went 28:34 throughout the day, your brain went through had a bunch of damage to it from 28:36 through had a bunch of damage to it from 28:36 through had a bunch of damage to it from inflammation, from toxicity and all 28:38 inflammation, from toxicity and all 28:38 inflammation, from toxicity and all that, your brain gets repaired overnight 28:41 that, your brain gets repaired overnight 28:41 that, your brain gets repaired overnight through BDNF while you're sleeping so 28:43 through BDNF while you're sleeping so 28:43 through BDNF while you're sleeping so that you wake up the next morning with 28:45 that you wake up the next morning with 28:45 that you wake up the next morning with the same brain that you had the day 28:46 the same brain that you had the day 28:46 the same brain that you had the day before. If you don't sleep adequately, 28:48 before. If you don't sleep adequately, 28:48 before. If you don't sleep adequately, you don't get that BDNF upregulation in 28:50 you don't get that BDNF upregulation in 28:50 you don't get that BDNF upregulation in your gut microbiome. You're going to 28:52 your gut microbiome. You're going to 28:52 your gut microbiome. You're going to wake up with a brain that's a little bit 28:53 wake up with a brain that's a little bit 28:53 wake up with a brain that's a little bit more damaged than the day before, right? 28:56 more damaged than the day before, right? 28:56 more damaged than the day before, right? And you could see quickly how that can 28:57 And you could see quickly how that can 28:57 And you could see quickly how that can accumulate uh time after time, day after
Butyrate, Fiber, and Microbiome Support 29:00 accumulate uh time after time, day after 29:00 accumulate uh time after time, day after day. So, so pillar number three is the 29:03 day. So, so pillar number three is the 29:03 day. So, so pillar number three is the exercise and sleep. Pillar number four 29:05 exercise and sleep. Pillar number four 29:05 exercise and sleep. Pillar number four is what I call exposure. So, you want to 29:07 is what I call exposure. So, you want to 29:07 is what I call exposure. So, you want to reduce your exposure to things that harm 29:09 reduce your exposure to things that harm 29:09 reduce your exposure to things that harm your microbiome, right? So, you think 29:11 your microbiome, right? So, you think 29:11 your microbiome, right? So, you think about processed foods, all of the 29:13 about processed foods, all of the 29:13 about processed foods, all of the personal care products that are loaded 29:14 personal care products that are loaded 29:14 personal care products that are loaded with antimicrobials, over sterilization 29:17 with antimicrobials, over sterilization 29:17 with antimicrobials, over sterilization of your environment, using all these 29:19 of your environment, using all these 29:19 of your environment, using all these chlorine based cleansers to clean your 29:22 chlorine based cleansers to clean your 29:22 chlorine based cleansers to clean your desk and places like that that don't 29:23 desk and places like that that don't 29:23 desk and places like that that don't need to be sterilized. All of that is 29:25 need to be sterilized. All of that is 29:25 need to be sterilized. All of that is negative exposure to your microbiome. 29:27 negative exposure to your microbiome. 29:27 negative exposure to your microbiome. And then positive exposure to your 29:29 And then positive exposure to your 29:29 And then positive exposure to your microbiome is getting outside in nature, 29:31 microbiome is getting outside in nature, 29:31 microbiome is getting outside in nature, getting among people. I'm a big hugger. 29:34 getting among people. I'm a big hugger. 29:34 getting among people. I'm a big hugger. Um, you know, you want to interact with 29:36 Um, you know, you want to interact with 29:36 Um, you know, you want to interact with people. You want to get together in 29:37 people. You want to get together in 29:37 people. You want to get together in small groups with with other people as 29:39 small groups with with other people as 29:39 small groups with with other people as much as you can because we're all 29:41 much as you can because we're all 29:41 much as you can because we're all sharing microbes and you want to get out 29:43 sharing microbes and you want to get out 29:43 sharing microbes and you want to get out in the natural environment as much as 29:44 in the natural environment as much as 29:44 in the natural environment as much as you can because we're sharing microbes. 29:46 you can because we're sharing microbes. 29:46 you can because we're sharing microbes. And then the last bit is 29:47 And then the last bit is 29:47 And then the last bit is supplementation. Uh, and the reason why 29:49 supplementation. Uh, and the reason why 29:49 supplementation. Uh, and the reason why I put pillar number five as 29:51 I put pillar number five as 29:51 I put pillar number five as supplementation is because you actually 29:53 supplementation is because you actually 29:53 supplementation is because you actually cannot outs supplement your way of not 29:56 cannot outs supplement your way of not 29:56 cannot outs supplement your way of not doing the first four pillars, right? Um, 29:59 doing the first four pillars, right? Um, 29:59 doing the first four pillars, right? Um, the supplementation is a massive 30:02 the supplementation is a massive 30:02 the supplementation is a massive enhancement to the other things you're 30:04 enhancement to the other things you're 30:04 enhancement to the other things you're doing. And so it can really move the 30:06 doing. And so it can really move the 30:06 doing. And so it can really move the needle, but it doesn't move things much 30:07 needle, but it doesn't move things much 30:08 needle, but it doesn't move things much if you're not doing this first four 30:09 if you're not doing this first four 30:09 if you're not doing this first four things. Um, so with supplementation, the 30:11 things. Um, so with supplementation, the 30:11 things. Um, so with supplementation, the sporebased probiotics, the megaspore we 30:13 sporebased probiotics, the megaspore we 30:14 sporebased probiotics, the megaspore we were talking about, uh, we've published 30:15 were talking about, uh, we've published 30:15 were talking about, uh, we've published studies on on reducing endotoxmia 30:18 studies on on reducing endotoxmia 30:18 studies on on reducing endotoxmia significantly. I love imoglobulins, IGG, 30:22 significantly. I love imoglobulins, IGG, 30:22 significantly. I love imoglobulins, IGG, especially in the detox world, because 30:24 especially in the detox world, because 30:24 especially in the detox world, because they bind all kinds of toxins. Um, not 30:27 they bind all kinds of toxins. Um, not 30:27 they bind all kinds of toxins. Um, not only LPS, but they bind mold toxins and 30:30 only LPS, but they bind mold toxins and 30:30 only LPS, but they bind mold toxins and environmental toxins, and I'll then take 30:32 environmental toxins, and I'll then take 30:32 environmental toxins, and I'll then take the toxygenic load off the system and 30:35 the toxygenic load off the system and 30:35 the toxygenic load off the system and take it out through defecation. Um, I 30:37 take it out through defecation. Um, I 30:37 take it out through defecation. Um, I love prebiotics, oligosaccharide based 30:39 love prebiotics, oligosaccharide based 30:40 love prebiotics, oligosaccharide based prebiotics to feed the keystone 30:41 prebiotics to feed the keystone 30:41 prebiotics to feed the keystone bacteria. Lactopherin is actually a 30:44 bacteria. Lactopherin is actually a 30:44 bacteria. Lactopherin is actually a fantastic compound as well, right? Uh, 30:46 fantastic compound as well, right? Uh, 30:46 fantastic compound as well, right? Uh, of course, it helps with iron and 30:48 of course, it helps with iron and 30:48 of course, it helps with iron and ferotin and anemia, but but also more 30:50 ferotin and anemia, but but also more 30:50 ferotin and anemia, but but also more importantly, lactopherin is a very 30:52 importantly, lactopherin is a very 30:52 importantly, lactopherin is a very important component of your immune 30:54 important component of your immune 30:54 important component of your immune system [clears throat] and actually 30:56 system [clears throat] and actually 30:56 system [clears throat] and actually directly binds LPS in the gut as well. 31:00 directly binds LPS in the gut as well. 31:00 directly binds LPS in the gut as well. Another unsung hero in this world and 31:02 Another unsung hero in this world and 31:02 Another unsung hero in this world and you may you may be using it in your 31:03 you may you may be using it in your 31:03 you may you may be using it in your practice is yeast beta glucan. um and 31:07 practice is yeast beta glucan. um and 31:07 practice is yeast beta glucan. um and and not for the the conventional idea of 31:10 and not for the the conventional idea of 31:10 and not for the the conventional idea of immune stimulation that people think 31:12 immune stimulation that people think 31:12 immune stimulation that people think about because when you know you think 31:14 about because when you know you think 31:14 about because when you know you think about yeast betalucan you think like oh 31:16 about yeast betalucan you think like oh 31:16 about yeast betalucan you think like oh colds and flu right I can shorten the 31:18 colds and flu right I can shorten the 31:18 colds and flu right I can shorten the duration of my colds and flu it does 31:20 duration of my colds and flu it does 31:20 duration of my colds and flu it does that but that's not the part that's 31:22 that but that's not the part that's 31:22 that but that's not the part that's interesting at all to me because like 31:24 interesting at all to me because like 31:24 interesting at all to me because like lots of other things can shorten 31:25 lots of other things can shorten 31:25 lots of other things can shorten duration of colds and flu yeast 31:27 duration of colds and flu yeast 31:27 duration of colds and flu yeast betaglucan does one thing that it's the 31:29 betaglucan does one thing that it's the 31:29 betaglucan does one thing that it's the only compound known to do right there's 31:32 only compound known to do right there's 31:32 only compound known to do right there's no other research on any other compound 31:34 no other research on any other compound 31:34 no other research on any other compound in the world that does this right and it 31:37 in the world that does this right and it 31:37 in the world that does this right and it trains the im innate immune system right 31:41 trains the im innate immune system right 31:41 trains the im innate immune system right that's a very novel concept so okay it's 31:44 that's a very novel concept so okay it's 31:44 that's a very novel concept so okay it's and it's called trained immunity right 31:46 and it's called trained immunity right 31:46 and it's called trained immunity right now here's why it's novel for for for 31:48 now here's why it's novel for for for 31:48 now here's why it's novel for for for those listening that don't know the 31:49 those listening that don't know the 31:49 those listening that don't know the separation between the the immune uh 31:53 separation between the the immune uh 31:53 separation between the the immune uh system so you've got the innate immune 31:54 system so you've got the innate immune 31:54 system so you've got the innate immune system which is the first actors they 31:56 system which is the first actors they 31:56 system which is the first actors they act fast they have non-specific tools 31:59 act fast they have non-specific tools 31:59 act fast they have non-specific tools and then you've got the adaptive immune 32:01 and then you've got the adaptive immune 32:01 and then you've got the adaptive immune system which is the memory the much more 32:03 system which is the memory the much more 32:03 system which is the memory the much more precision actors right when you get sick 32:05 precision actors right when you get sick 32:05 precision actors right when you get sick and you feel all the inflammation and 32:07 and you feel all the inflammation and 32:07 and you feel all the inflammation and fever and pains and aches and all that, 32:09 fever and pains and aches and all that, 32:09 fever and pains and aches and all that, that's the innate immune system doing 32:11 that's the innate immune system doing 32:11 that's the innate immune system doing its thing, right? Uh and and the innate 32:13 its thing, right? Uh and and the innate 32:14 its thing, right? Uh and and the innate immune system is akin to like say 32:16 immune system is akin to like say 32:16 immune system is akin to like say there's a bunch of bugs that flew into 32:18 there's a bunch of bugs that flew into 32:18 there's a bunch of bugs that flew into your your room because a window's open, 32:20 your your room because a window's open, 32:20 your your room because a window's open, you're trying to kill the bugs. It's 32:22 you're trying to kill the bugs. It's 32:22 you're trying to kill the bugs. It's like using a blowtorrch to kill the 32:23 like using a blowtorrch to kill the 32:23 like using a blowtorrch to kill the bugs, right? You're going to kill the 32:25 bugs, right? You're going to kill the 32:25 bugs, right? You're going to kill the bugs, but you're also burning the wall 32:27 bugs, but you're also burning the wall 32:27 bugs, but you're also burning the wall to a certain degree, right? But that's 32:29 to a certain degree, right? But that's 32:29 to a certain degree, right? But that's the innate immune system. They get there 32:30 the innate immune system. They get there 32:30 the innate immune system. They get there fast. They use blow torches. They just 32:33 fast. They use blow torches. They just 32:33 fast. They use blow torches. They just destroy things in a given area and and 32:35 destroy things in a given area and and 32:35 destroy things in a given area and and then the adaptive immune system comes 32:37 then the adaptive immune system comes 32:37 then the adaptive immune system comes along goes, "Hey, what was that thing 32:38 along goes, "Hey, what was that thing 32:38 along goes, "Hey, what was that thing that causes the problem, part of the 32:40 that causes the problem, part of the 32:40 that causes the problem, part of the innate immune system presents what it 32:42 innate immune system presents what it 32:42 innate immune system presents what it thinks was the problem. The adaptive 32:44 thinks was the problem. The adaptive 32:44 thinks was the problem. The adaptive immune system goes, "Aha, we know what 32:46 immune system goes, "Aha, we know what 32:46 immune system goes, "Aha, we know what that is now. We're going to build memory 32:48 that is now. We're going to build memory 32:48 that is now. We're going to build memory against it. So next time we see it, we 32:50 against it. So next time we see it, we 32:50 against it. So next time we see it, we can deal with it much faster." Right? Uh 32:52 can deal with it much faster." Right? Uh 32:52 can deal with it much faster." Right? Uh that's immunity. Adaptive immunity that 32:55 that's immunity. Adaptive immunity that 32:55 that's immunity. Adaptive immunity that most people kind of understand to a 32:56 most people kind of understand to a 32:56 most people kind of understand to a certain degree. What most people don't 32:58 certain degree. What most people don't 32:58 certain degree. What most people don't understand is that the innate immune 33:00 understand is that the innate immune 33:00 understand is that the innate immune system can also have memory and can also 33:03 system can also have memory and can also 33:03 system can also have memory and can also be trained to respond to things that it 33:06 be trained to respond to things that it 33:06 be trained to respond to things that it has seen before in a much cleaner, 33:09 has seen before in a much cleaner, 33:09 has seen before in a much cleaner, faster fashion, right? And that's 33:11 faster fashion, right? And that's 33:11 faster fashion, right? And that's actually called trained immunity. And 33:13 actually called trained immunity. And 33:13 actually called trained immunity. And that training actually occurs with the 33:15 that training actually occurs with the 33:15 that training actually occurs with the macrofasages and dendritic cells within 33:17 macrofasages and dendritic cells within 33:17 macrofasages and dendritic cells within your body. And there's only one compound 33:20 your body. And there's only one compound 33:20 your body. And there's only one compound ever shown to increase trained immunity 33:22 ever shown to increase trained immunity 33:22 ever shown to increase trained immunity and that is yeast beta glucan. Right? So 33:26 and that is yeast beta glucan. Right? So 33:26 and that is yeast beta glucan. Right? So next time the same uh toxin is 33:28 next time the same uh toxin is 33:28 next time the same uh toxin is encountered uh the same virus is 33:30 encountered uh the same virus is 33:30 encountered uh the same virus is encountered and all that your 33:32 encountered and all that your 33:32 encountered and all that your macrofasages and dendritic cells can 33:33 macrofasages and dendritic cells can 33:34 macrofasages and dendritic cells can actually recognize it faster deal with 33:36 actually recognize it faster deal with 33:36 actually recognize it faster deal with it faster with less inflammation cuz 33:39 it faster with less inflammation cuz 33:39 it faster with less inflammation cuz normally when when your when your 33:41 normally when when your when your 33:41 normally when when your when your macrofasages and dendritic cells see 33:43 macrofasages and dendritic cells see 33:43 macrofasages and dendritic cells see something that they think is bad and 33:45 something that they think is bad and 33:45 something that they think is bad and they deal with it they also fire up the 33:48 they deal with it they also fire up the 33:48 they deal with it they also fire up the inflammatory cascades and recruit other 33:51 inflammatory cascades and recruit other 33:51 inflammatory cascades and recruit other innate immune cells to the region right 33:52 innate immune cells to the region right 33:52 innate immune cells to the region right natural killer cells and uh so on right 33:55 natural killer cells and uh so on right 33:55 natural killer cells and uh so on right CD CD8 T cells and so on. And so it 33:57 CD CD8 T cells and so on. And so it 33:57 CD CD8 T cells and so on. And so it creates this big inflammatory response. 34:00 creates this big inflammatory response. 34:00 creates this big inflammatory response. But a trained immune system gets better 34:02 But a trained immune system gets better 34:02 But a trained immune system gets better at recognizing those problems and 34:05 at recognizing those problems and 34:05 at recognizing those problems and dealing with it with less and less 34:06 dealing with it with less and less 34:06 dealing with it with less and less damage, right? So so yeast betalucan is 34:11 damage, right? So so yeast betalucan is 34:11 damage, right? So so yeast betalucan is a is a little bit of a secret weapon uh 34:14 a is a little bit of a secret weapon uh 34:14 a is a little bit of a secret weapon uh in in in uh immune um science and immune 34:18 in in in uh immune um science and immune 34:18 in in in uh immune um science and immune biology. Um so those are kind of the top 34:21 biology. Um so those are kind of the top 34:21 biology. Um so those are kind of the top things that I love. There's probably a 34:23 things that I love. There's probably a 34:23 things that I love. There's probably a lot more that I'm not mentioning, but um 34:26 lot more that I'm not mentioning, but um 34:26 lot more that I'm not mentioning, but um but I think if people even paid 34:28 but I think if people even paid 34:28 but I think if people even paid attention to those, that's that's a huge 34:30 attention to those, that's that's a huge 34:30 attention to those, that's that's a huge huge array of tools. 34:32 huge array of tools. 34:32 huge array of tools. >> Yeah. So much gold there. So, I just 34:35 >> Yeah. So much gold there. So, I just 34:35 >> Yeah. So much gold there. So, I just want to revisit a couple things, but one 34:37 want to revisit a couple things, but one 34:38 want to revisit a couple things, but one is the short chain fatty acids because I 34:41 is the short chain fatty acids because I 34:41 is the short chain fatty acids because I have to confess that butyrate, a short 34:43 have to confess that butyrate, a short 34:43 have to confess that butyrate, a short chain fatty acid, is a bit of an 34:45 chain fatty acid, is a bit of an 34:45 chain fatty acid, is a bit of an obsession for me in my world. They 34:48 obsession for me in my world. They 34:48 obsession for me in my world. They patients have the worn down gut barrier. 34:51 patients have the worn down gut barrier. 34:51 patients have the worn down gut barrier. The immune system stuck in inflammation 34:54 The immune system stuck in inflammation 34:54 The immune system stuck in inflammation and then butyrate. We've got butyrate 34:56 and then butyrate. We've got butyrate 34:56 and then butyrate. We've got butyrate being a fuel for the cells lining the 34:58 being a fuel for the cells lining the 34:58 being a fuel for the cells lining the colon helping to hold the gut barrier 35:01 colon helping to hold the gut barrier 35:01 colon helping to hold the gut barrier tight and also calming the immune system 35:04 tight and also calming the immune system 35:04 tight and also calming the immune system down. So, it makes me really curious 35:07 down. So, it makes me really curious 35:07 down. So, it makes me really curious where you think the science is going as 35:09 where you think the science is going as 35:09 where you think the science is going as far as from the microbiome expert side. 35:13 far as from the microbiome expert side. 35:13 far as from the microbiome expert side. Would there be any future for maybe 35:16 Would there be any future for maybe 35:16 Would there be any future for maybe targeted butyrate producing strains 35:18 targeted butyrate producing strains 35:18 targeted butyrate producing strains because there's only a few that will 35:20 because there's only a few that will 35:20 because there's only a few that will reduce butyrate or for any combo 35:23 reduce butyrate or for any combo 35:23 reduce butyrate or for any combo products or anything that that you've 35:25 products or anything that that you've 35:26 products or anything that that you've been exploring with regard to butyrate. 35:28 been exploring with regard to butyrate. 35:28 been exploring with regard to butyrate. Yeah, we actually did some work on this 35:29 Yeah, we actually did some work on this 35:29 Yeah, we actually did some work on this and we we published some some work when 35:31 and we we published some some work when 35:31 and we we published some some work when I was at Microbiome Labs on this itself 35:33 I was at Microbiome Labs on this itself 35:33 I was at Microbiome Labs on this itself and and I share your obsession with 35:35 and and I share your obsession with 35:35 and and I share your obsession with butyrate uh and short- chain fatty acids 35:38 butyrate uh and short- chain fatty acids 35:38 butyrate uh and short- chain fatty acids in general because you know there are 35:40 in general because you know there are 35:40 in general because you know there are three compounds but propane and acetate 35:43 three compounds but propane and acetate 35:43 three compounds but propane and acetate right and they do so many things it's 35:45 right and they do so many things it's 35:46 right and they do so many things it's mindboggling 35:47 mindboggling 35:47 mindboggling um on my skin microbiome side I've been 35:49 um on my skin microbiome side I've been 35:49 um on my skin microbiome side I've been focusing a lot on acetate because 35:51 focusing a lot on acetate because 35:51 focusing a lot on acetate because acetate seems to work in the periphery 35:53 acetate seems to work in the periphery 35:53 acetate seems to work in the periphery in skin and and actually I was I 35:56 in skin and and actually I was I 35:56 in skin and and actually I was I received a US patent on utilizing 35:59 received a US patent on utilizing 35:59 received a US patent on utilizing acetate from the gut to to heal acne. 36:02 acetate from the gut to to heal acne. 36:02 acetate from the gut to to heal acne. Um, and so, you know, so these are 36:05 Um, and so, you know, so these are 36:05 Um, and so, you know, so these are powerful compounds. Butyrate, like you 36:07 powerful compounds. Butyrate, like you 36:07 powerful compounds. Butyrate, like you said, uh, is critically important for 36:09 said, uh, is critically important for 36:09 said, uh, is critically important for metabolic health. It's critically 36:11 metabolic health. It's critically 36:11 metabolic health. It's critically important for the lining of your gut, 36:13 important for the lining of your gut, 36:13 important for the lining of your gut, the structural elements of the lining of 36:14 the structural elements of the lining of 36:14 the structural elements of the lining of the gut. It's really important for 36:17 the gut. It's really important for 36:17 the gut. It's really important for building the mucin layer, which is which 36:19 building the mucin layer, which is which 36:19 building the mucin layer, which is which is a very important protective layer of 36:21 is a very important protective layer of 36:21 is a very important protective layer of the lining of your gut, and in fact, 36:23 the lining of your gut, and in fact, 36:23 the lining of your gut, and in fact, where all the action takes place. That's 36:25 where all the action takes place. That's 36:25 where all the action takes place. That's where most of your microbes live and you 36:27 where most of your microbes live and you 36:27 where most of your microbes live and you need butyrate to feed the goblet cells 36:29 need butyrate to feed the goblet cells 36:30 need butyrate to feed the goblet cells that make the mucin. You also and u you 36:33 that make the mucin. You also and u you 36:33 that make the mucin. You also and u you know I'm not sure a lot of people are 36:35 know I'm not sure a lot of people are 36:35 know I'm not sure a lot of people are aware of this butyrate is also one of 36:36 aware of this butyrate is also one of 36:36 aware of this butyrate is also one of the primary fuels for your your micro 36:39 the primary fuels for your your micro 36:39 the primary fuels for your your micro macrofasages and dendritic cells that 36:41 macrofasages and dendritic cells that 36:41 macrofasages and dendritic cells that are circulating around to protect you. 36:43 are circulating around to protect you. 36:43 are circulating around to protect you. Right? So with inadequate butyrate 36:45 Right? So with inadequate butyrate 36:46 Right? So with inadequate butyrate you're actually not fueling these 36:47 you're actually not fueling these 36:47 you're actually not fueling these peripheral immune cells. Um so so 36:50 peripheral immune cells. Um so so 36:50 peripheral immune cells. Um so so butyrate is critically important. the 36:53 butyrate is critically important. the 36:53 butyrate is critically important. the thing about butyrate. So, and I like 36:55 thing about butyrate. So, and I like 36:55 thing about butyrate. So, and I like butyrate supplements, right? So, there's 36:56 butyrate supplements, right? So, there's 36:56 butyrate supplements, right? So, there's a product like tributery that I think 36:59 a product like tributery that I think 36:59 a product like tributery that I think works well um and it and it definitely 37:03 works well um and it and it definitely 37:03 works well um and it and it definitely helps when someone's not making enough 37:05 helps when someone's not making enough 37:05 helps when someone's not making enough indogenous butyrate. It can never 37:07 indogenous butyrate. It can never 37:07 indogenous butyrate. It can never replace endogenous butyrate, right? And 37:09 replace endogenous butyrate, right? And 37:09 replace endogenous butyrate, right? And the reason for that is butyrate is made 37:13 the reason for that is butyrate is made 37:13 the reason for that is butyrate is made in in many different sections of the 37:16 in in many different sections of the 37:16 in in many different sections of the colon. Um and in the different sections 37:19 colon. Um and in the different sections 37:19 colon. Um and in the different sections of the colon, it gets utilized slightly 37:21 of the colon, it gets utilized slightly 37:21 of the colon, it gets utilized slightly differently. and and and then also it it 37:24 differently. and and and then also it it 37:24 differently. and and and then also it it becomes a precursor to the other two 37:26 becomes a precursor to the other two 37:26 becomes a precursor to the other two short- chain fatty acids acetate and 37:29 short- chain fatty acids acetate and 37:29 short- chain fatty acids acetate and propionate which are also important 37:30 propionate which are also important 37:30 propionate which are also important right um so there's interchange between 37:33 right um so there's interchange between 37:33 right um so there's interchange between those those short- chain fatty acids so 37:35 those those short- chain fatty acids so 37:36 those those short- chain fatty acids so you do want to maximize your indogenous 37:38 you do want to maximize your indogenous 37:38 you do want to maximize your indogenous butyrate production um we did uh a study 37:41 butyrate production um we did uh a study 37:41 butyrate production um we did uh a study that we published on the use of the 37:44 that we published on the use of the 37:44 that we published on the use of the spores in megaspore with the prebiotic 37:47 spores in megaspore with the prebiotic 37:47 spores in megaspore with the prebiotic right so we what we showed is that when 37:49 right so we what we showed is that when 37:49 right so we what we showed is that when you put megaspore into 37:52 you put megaspore into 37:52 you put megaspore into an average microbiome that's that's not 37:55 an average microbiome that's that's not 37:55 an average microbiome that's that's not producing great amounts of butyrate and 37:57 producing great amounts of butyrate and 37:57 producing great amounts of butyrate and short- chain fatty acids, we can 37:59 short- chain fatty acids, we can 37:59 short- chain fatty acids, we can increase the amount of butyrate 38:01 increase the amount of butyrate 38:01 increase the amount of butyrate production by 50%. Uh when we add the 38:04 production by 50%. Uh when we add the 38:04 production by 50%. Uh when we add the prebiotic, it goes to 150%. And so the 38:08 prebiotic, it goes to 150%. And so the 38:08 prebiotic, it goes to 150%. And so the combination of oligosaccharides and the 38:10 combination of oligosaccharides and the 38:10 combination of oligosaccharides and the spores is a massive uh you know 38:14 spores is a massive uh you know 38:14 spores is a massive uh you know stimulation for indogenous butyrate 38:16 stimulation for indogenous butyrate 38:16 stimulation for indogenous butyrate production, right? And so, but then you 38:18 production, right? And so, but then you 38:18 production, right? And so, but then you hear all these people talk about, you 38:20 hear all these people talk about, you 38:20 hear all these people talk about, you know, grass-fed butter and putting it in 38:22 know, grass-fed butter and putting it in 38:22 know, grass-fed butter and putting it in coffee and things like try to get 38:24 coffee and things like try to get 38:24 coffee and things like try to get butyrate that way. It's not a great 38:26 butyrate that way. It's not a great 38:26 butyrate that way. It's not a great source of butyrate. What you really want 38:27 source of butyrate. What you really want 38:28 source of butyrate. What you really want to do is get your indogenous butyrate 38:29 to do is get your indogenous butyrate 38:29 to do is get your indogenous butyrate levels up, right? So, in that case, it's 38:32 levels up, right? So, in that case, it's 38:32 levels up, right? So, in that case, it's it's a the oligosaccharides are a 38:34 it's a the oligosaccharides are a 38:34 it's a the oligosaccharides are a fantastic way to do it. Now the 38:36 fantastic way to do it. Now the 38:36 fantastic way to do it. Now the difference between oligosaccharides and 38:38 difference between oligosaccharides and 38:38 difference between oligosaccharides and like regular fiber is that 38:40 like regular fiber is that 38:40 like regular fiber is that oligosaccharides are much more 38:42 oligosaccharides are much more 38:42 oligosaccharides are much more specialized complex carbohydrate 38:44 specialized complex carbohydrate 38:44 specialized complex carbohydrate structures that feed very narrow ranges 38:47 structures that feed very narrow ranges 38:47 structures that feed very narrow ranges of microbes. And these oligosaccharides 38:49 of microbes. And these oligosaccharides 38:49 of microbes. And these oligosaccharides like FOS, go XOS feed keystone species 38:53 like FOS, go XOS feed keystone species 38:53 like FOS, go XOS feed keystone species and they feed a lot of the butyrate 38:55 and they feed a lot of the butyrate 38:55 and they feed a lot of the butyrate producers. Um you know versus fiber 38:58 producers. Um you know versus fiber 38:58 producers. Um you know versus fiber feeds a lot of different bacteria in 38:59 feeds a lot of different bacteria in 38:59 feeds a lot of different bacteria in your gut which is important and good but 39:01 your gut which is important and good but 39:01 your gut which is important and good but if you want to get your butyrate up 39:03 if you want to get your butyrate up 39:03 if you want to get your butyrate up those oligosaccharides are going to be 39:04 those oligosaccharides are going to be 39:04 those oligosaccharides are going to be really important. And then to increase 39:06 really important. And then to increase 39:06 really important. And then to increase the utilization of the ilosaccharides, 39:08 the utilization of the ilosaccharides, 39:08 the utilization of the ilosaccharides, add in the spores and you'll start 39:10 add in the spores and you'll start 39:10 add in the spores and you'll start getting a tremendous amount of 39:11 getting a tremendous amount of 39:11 getting a tremendous amount of indogenous butyrate production. I would 39:13 indogenous butyrate production. I would 39:13 indogenous butyrate production. I would also caution people on stool testing for 39:17 also caution people on stool testing for 39:17 also caution people on stool testing for butyrate. Um because a lot of times we 39:20 butyrate. Um because a lot of times we 39:20 butyrate. Um because a lot of times we use that as a measure of like, oh, how 39:21 use that as a measure of like, oh, how 39:22 use that as a measure of like, oh, how much butyrate are they producing? That's 39:24 much butyrate are they producing? That's 39:24 much butyrate are they producing? That's proven to be a little bit, you know, 39:26 proven to be a little bit, you know, 39:26 proven to be a little bit, you know, like 39:28 like 39:28 like disconnected from what's actually 39:30 disconnected from what's actually 39:30 disconnected from what's actually happening in the gut, right? Um I don't 39:32 happening in the gut, right? Um I don't 39:32 happening in the gut, right? Um I don't know, are you familiar with that? Uh 39:34 know, are you familiar with that? Uh 39:34 know, are you familiar with that? Uh >> yeah, absolutely. I mean, I always take 39:36 >> yeah, absolutely. I mean, I always take 39:36 >> yeah, absolutely. I mean, I always take it in context because many times I'd see 39:39 it in context because many times I'd see 39:39 it in context because many times I'd see the butyrate levels on the gut testing 39:42 the butyrate levels on the gut testing 39:42 the butyrate levels on the gut testing are very low, but I always take it in 39:44 are very low, but I always take it in 39:44 are very low, but I always take it in context of symptoms or even if they're 39:46 context of symptoms or even if they're 39:46 context of symptoms or even if they're normal, right? Like what are their 39:48 normal, right? Like what are their 39:48 normal, right? Like what are their symptoms? You know, what what exposures 39:50 symptoms? You know, what what exposures 39:50 symptoms? You know, what what exposures do they have? And it always has to be 39:52 do they have? And it always has to be 39:52 do they have? And it always has to be taken in context. For sure. 39:54 taken in context. For sure. 39:54 taken in context. For sure. >> Yeah, for sure. And and and where this 39:55 >> Yeah, for sure. And and and where this 39:55 >> Yeah, for sure. And and and where this where this um kind of paradox came about 39:58 where this um kind of paradox came about 39:58 where this um kind of paradox came about is, you know, we know butyrate is 40:00 is, you know, we know butyrate is 40:00 is, you know, we know butyrate is metabolically really important, right? 40:03 metabolically really important, right? 40:03 metabolically really important, right? So, so it it controls blood sugar, 40:05 So, so it it controls blood sugar, 40:05 So, so it it controls blood sugar, satiety, hormones, all of that kind of 40:07 satiety, hormones, all of that kind of 40:07 satiety, hormones, all of that kind of stuff. So, it's it's quite natural that 40:09 stuff. So, it's it's quite natural that 40:09 stuff. So, it's it's quite natural that lean people would be making plenty of 40:11 lean people would be making plenty of 40:11 lean people would be making plenty of butyrate as as a as a key part of how 40:15 butyrate as as a as a key part of how 40:15 butyrate as as a as a key part of how they're staying lean and metabolically 40:16 they're staying lean and metabolically 40:16 they're staying lean and metabolically healthy. And thereby uh overweight 40:18 healthy. And thereby uh overweight 40:18 healthy. And thereby uh overweight individuals or obese individuals would 40:20 individuals or obese individuals would 40:20 individuals or obese individuals would be making less butyrate. And that's we 40:21 be making less butyrate. And that's we 40:22 be making less butyrate. And that's we know that to be true when you look at 40:24 know that to be true when you look at 40:24 know that to be true when you look at microbiome sampling of lean versus obese 40:27 microbiome sampling of lean versus obese 40:27 microbiome sampling of lean versus obese individuals. But then when they they 40:29 individuals. But then when they they 40:29 individuals. But then when they they started studying butyrate in stool uh 40:32 started studying butyrate in stool uh 40:32 started studying butyrate in stool uh and they found that obese individuals 40:34 and they found that obese individuals 40:34 and they found that obese individuals had much higher butyrate in stool than 40:35 had much higher butyrate in stool than 40:35 had much higher butyrate in stool than lean individuals right and that created 40:37 lean individuals right and that created 40:37 lean individuals right and that created a bit of a paradox because it's like 40:39 a bit of a paradox because it's like 40:39 a bit of a paradox because it's like wait a minute are they producing more is 40:41 wait a minute are they producing more is 40:41 wait a minute are they producing more is that why well actually so stool is an 40:43 that why well actually so stool is an 40:43 that why well actually so stool is an excoratory component right so it's 40:46 excoratory component right so it's 40:46 excoratory component right so it's they're they're excreting more butyrate 40:48 they're they're excreting more butyrate 40:48 they're they're excreting more butyrate maybe they're not even utilizing as much 40:51 maybe they're not even utilizing as much 40:51 maybe they're not even utilizing as much right so that may be why you're seeing 40:53 right so that may be why you're seeing 40:53 right so that may be why you're seeing more in stool and and they're producing 40:55 more in stool and and they're producing 40:55 more in stool and and they're producing it maybe in different regions of the gut 40:57 it maybe in different regions of the gut 40:57 it maybe in different regions of the gut this is why I talked talked about all 40:58 this is why I talked talked about all 40:58 this is why I talked talked about all the different parts of the colon being 41:01 the different parts of the colon being 41:01 the different parts of the colon being really important. So maybe obese 41:03 really important. So maybe obese 41:03 really important. So maybe obese individuals are producing more in the 41:04 individuals are producing more in the 41:04 individuals are producing more in the distal colon that's not getting absorbed 41:07 distal colon that's not getting absorbed 41:07 distal colon that's not getting absorbed in the rest of the body and it's coming 41:09 in the rest of the body and it's coming 41:09 in the rest of the body and it's coming out more in stool, right? Because stool 41:11 out more in stool, right? Because stool 41:11 out more in stool, right? Because stool is often a a sampling what's really 41:13 is often a a sampling what's really 41:13 is often a a sampling what's really happening in the distal colon. Um so so 41:16 happening in the distal colon. Um so so 41:16 happening in the distal colon. Um so so we want to caution about that and I 41:17 we want to caution about that and I 41:18 we want to caution about that and I would just say about butyrate like 41:19 would just say about butyrate like 41:20 would just say about butyrate like there's no reason not to try to push 41:22 there's no reason not to try to push 41:22 there's no reason not to try to push everyone to maximize butyrate 41:24 everyone to maximize butyrate 41:24 everyone to maximize butyrate production, right? There's there's no 41:25 production, right? There's there's no 41:26 production, right? There's there's no downside to it, right? So even testing 41:28 downside to it, right? So even testing 41:28 downside to it, right? So even testing it's kind of like all right no matter 41:30 it's kind of like all right no matter 41:30 it's kind of like all right no matter what the test says let's maximize 41:32 what the test says let's maximize 41:32 what the test says let's maximize butyrate you know it's one of those 41:33 butyrate you know it's one of those 41:33 butyrate you know it's one of those things that are just really really good 41:36 things that are just really really good 41:36 things that are just really really good for you overall. 41:37 for you overall. 41:38 for you overall. >> Absolutely. And then cuz you know there 41:40 >> Absolutely. And then cuz you know there 41:40 >> Absolutely. And then cuz you know there are those producers of butyrate like the 41:42 are those producers of butyrate like the 41:42 are those producers of butyrate like the bacteria that actually produce it but a 41:45 bacteria that actually produce it but a 41:45 bacteria that actually produce it but a lot of those are not easy to make shelf 41:48 lot of those are not easy to make shelf 41:48 lot of those are not easy to make shelf stable right to actually have like a 41:50 stable right to actually have like a 41:50 stable right to actually have like a butyrate producing probiotic 41:52 butyrate producing probiotic 41:52 butyrate producing probiotic >> probiotic. Yeah, I I had one. So I had a 41:54 >> probiotic. Yeah, I I had one. So I had a 41:54 >> probiotic. Yeah, I I had one. So I had a a strain called uh butery caucus 41:57 a strain called uh butery caucus 41:57 a strain called uh butery caucus polycum. Uh but caucus polycum is a
Mindset, Identity, and Recovery 42:01 polycum. Uh but caucus polycum is a 42:01 polycum. Uh but caucus polycum is a butyrate producer that lives in your 42:03 butyrate producer that lives in your 42:03 butyrate producer that lives in your seeum. Um and and it it is one of the 42:06 seeum. Um and and it it is one of the 42:06 seeum. Um and and it it is one of the highest butyrate producers. It is a 42:08 highest butyrate producers. It is a 42:08 highest butyrate producers. It is a strict anorob. That's why they're 42:10 strict anorob. That's why they're 42:10 strict anorob. That's why they're unstable. Most of these butyate 42:12 unstable. Most of these butyate 42:12 unstable. Most of these butyate producers in fact all of them are 42:14 producers in fact all of them are 42:14 producers in fact all of them are anorobic bacteria which means oxygen is 42:16 anorobic bacteria which means oxygen is 42:16 anorobic bacteria which means oxygen is toxic to them. So imagine dealing with 42:19 toxic to them. So imagine dealing with 42:19 toxic to them. So imagine dealing with them in the outside environment, right? 42:21 them in the outside environment, right? 42:21 them in the outside environment, right? production and encapsulation and all 42:23 production and encapsulation and all 42:23 production and encapsulation and all that they're dying very quickly when 42:25 that they're dying very quickly when 42:25 that they're dying very quickly when they get exposed to oxygen. Uh but we 42:27 they get exposed to oxygen. Uh but we 42:27 they get exposed to oxygen. Uh but we found a way uh as one of the last things 42:29 found a way uh as one of the last things 42:29 found a way uh as one of the last things I was doing at Microbiome Labs uh was we 42:32 I was doing at Microbiome Labs uh was we 42:32 I was doing at Microbiome Labs uh was we had found a anorobic production system 42:36 had found a anorobic production system 42:36 had found a anorobic production system where we could produce these um and and 42:39 where we could produce these um and and 42:39 where we could produce these um and and um and and we could stabilize them and 42:41 um and and we could stabilize them and 42:41 um and and we could stabilize them and and deliver them in capsule form to the 42:44 and deliver them in capsule form to the 42:44 and deliver them in capsule form to the large bowel. Um unfortunately at that 42:47 large bowel. Um unfortunately at that 42:47 large bowel. Um unfortunately at that point I I'd sold the business and then 42:49 point I I'd sold the business and then 42:49 point I I'd sold the business and then the uh the new owners decided not to 42:51 the uh the new owners decided not to 42:51 the uh the new owners decided not to continue with that um with that um 42:55 continue with that um with that um 42:55 continue with that um with that um particular project. That said uh I do I 42:59 particular project. That said uh I do I 42:59 particular project. That said uh I do I do have the privilege and opportunity of 43:01 do have the privilege and opportunity of 43:01 do have the privilege and opportunity of sitting on lots of companies boards and 43:04 sitting on lots of companies boards and 43:04 sitting on lots of companies boards and being and consulted by a lot of 43:05 being and consulted by a lot of 43:06 being and consulted by a lot of companies who are in the microbiome 43:07 companies who are in the microbiome 43:07 companies who are in the microbiome space. I can tell you with great 43:09 space. I can tell you with great 43:09 space. I can tell you with great certainty that there are new 43:11 certainty that there are new 43:11 certainty that there are new technologies coming out in the next say 43:13 technologies coming out in the next say 43:13 technologies coming out in the next say 10 to 12 months that can take these type 43:17 10 to 12 months that can take these type 43:17 10 to 12 months that can take these type of unstable strains and put them in a 43:19 of unstable strains and put them in a 43:19 of unstable strains and put them in a matrix that perfectly stabilizes them 43:22 matrix that perfectly stabilizes them 43:22 matrix that perfectly stabilizes them and gets them to engraft. And some of 43:24 and gets them to engraft. And some of 43:24 and gets them to engraft. And some of these anorobes are coming out uh and and 43:27 these anorobes are coming out uh and and 43:27 these anorobes are coming out uh and and you have you need a fraction of the dose 43:30 you have you need a fraction of the dose 43:30 you have you need a fraction of the dose because these ma these uh matrices that 43:32 because these ma these uh matrices that 43:32 because these ma these uh matrices that they're putting them in are much more 43:34 they're putting them in are much more 43:34 they're putting them in are much more sophisticated and they stabilize the 43:36 sophisticated and they stabilize the 43:36 sophisticated and they stabilize the organism. And so we will have um 43:39 organism. And so we will have um 43:40 organism. And so we will have um supplemental butyrate producers 43:43 supplemental butyrate producers 43:43 supplemental butyrate producers um coming out that will engraft, meaning 43:45 um coming out that will engraft, meaning 43:45 um coming out that will engraft, meaning that they will colonize permanently in 43:48 that they will colonize permanently in 43:48 that they will colonize permanently in your gut. And you can dramatically 43:51 your gut. And you can dramatically 43:51 your gut. And you can dramatically increase your butyrate production 43:52 increase your butyrate production 43:52 increase your butyrate production through a probiotic that way. And and 43:54 through a probiotic that way. And and 43:54 through a probiotic that way. And and these probiotics that that that we're 43:56 these probiotics that that that we're 43:56 these probiotics that that that we're talking about and working on are going 43:57 talking about and working on are going 43:57 talking about and working on are going to be uh once a week or once a month 43:59 to be uh once a week or once a month 43:59 to be uh once a week or once a month probiotics. Like you only take it once a 44:01 probiotics. Like you only take it once a 44:01 probiotics. Like you only take it once a month. You don't have to take it every 44:03 month. You don't have to take it every 44:03 month. You don't have to take it every day because they engraft and they stay 44:04 day because they engraft and they stay 44:04 day because they engraft and they stay for so long. So yes, there's some 44:06 for so long. So yes, there's some 44:06 for so long. So yes, there's some exciting things coming out on that on 44:08 exciting things coming out on that on 44:08 exciting things coming out on that on that front. 44:08 that front. 44:08 that front. >> That is so exciting. I am really glad to 44:11 >> That is so exciting. I am really glad to 44:11 >> That is so exciting. I am really glad to hear about that. I'll be looking forward 44:13 hear about that. I'll be looking forward 44:13 hear about that. I'll be looking forward to seeing the latest on that. And for 44:15 to seeing the latest on that. And for 44:16 to seeing the latest on that. And for those listening, yeah, so just to 44:17 those listening, yeah, so just to 44:17 those listening, yeah, so just to underscore, it's not just about, you 44:19 underscore, it's not just about, you 44:20 underscore, it's not just about, you know, take a probiotic, any probiotic. 44:22 know, take a probiotic, any probiotic. 44:22 know, take a probiotic, any probiotic. It's about the resilience of your entire 44:25 It's about the resilience of your entire 44:25 It's about the resilience of your entire gut on the inside from the whole entire 44:28 gut on the inside from the whole entire 44:28 gut on the inside from the whole entire tube and, you know, different phes and 44:31 tube and, you know, different phes and 44:31 tube and, you know, different phes and different environments from, you know, 44:33 different environments from, you know, 44:33 different environments from, you know, mouth on down. And we need they need 44:35 mouth on down. And we need they need 44:35 mouth on down. And we need they need different things and making the gut 44:38 different things and making the gut 44:38 different things and making the gut resilient so that it produces its own 44:40 resilient so that it produces its own 44:40 resilient so that it produces its own butyrate is the ideal. So a lot of times 44:43 butyrate is the ideal. So a lot of times 44:43 butyrate is the ideal. So a lot of times we're dealing with constant influx of 44:45 we're dealing with constant influx of 44:45 we're dealing with constant influx of toxins and taking supplemental butyrate 44:48 toxins and taking supplemental butyrate 44:48 toxins and taking supplemental butyrate and everything to to combat that. But we 44:52 and everything to to combat that. But we 44:52 and everything to to combat that. But we wanted to be from the gut ideally for 44:55 wanted to be from the gut ideally for 44:55 wanted to be from the gut ideally for sure. 44:56 sure. 44:56 sure. >> Yeah. Yeah. And and and a little bit of 44:58 >> Yeah. Yeah. And and and a little bit of 44:58 >> Yeah. Yeah. And and and a little bit of a um you know often overlooked component 45:01 a um you know often overlooked component 45:01 a um you know often overlooked component of all of this is is the liver, right? 45:04 of all of this is is the liver, right? 45:04 of all of this is is the liver, right? So, so the liver and the gut kind of go 45:07 So, so the liver and the gut kind of go 45:07 So, so the liver and the gut kind of go hand in hand. So, the liver is a a 45:09 hand in hand. So, the liver is a a 45:09 hand in hand. So, the liver is a a natural part of the digestive system. 45:12 natural part of the digestive system. 45:12 natural part of the digestive system. Um, and there's a significant influence 45:14 Um, and there's a significant influence 45:14 Um, and there's a significant influence on the microbiome and the liver. Uh, 45:17 on the microbiome and the liver. Uh, 45:17 on the microbiome and the liver. Uh, especially endotoxmia. So, we talked 45:19 especially endotoxmia. So, we talked 45:19 especially endotoxmia. So, we talked about that LPS that leaks through, 45:21 about that LPS that leaks through, 45:21 about that LPS that leaks through, right? But 85% of all the LPS that leaks 45:24 right? But 85% of all the LPS that leaks 45:24 right? But 85% of all the LPS that leaks through goes to the liver first. And so, 45:26 through goes to the liver first. And so, 45:26 through goes to the liver first. And so, the liver has to deal with that massive 45:28 the liver has to deal with that massive 45:28 the liver has to deal with that massive toxygenic load. Uh, the liver has a 45:31 toxygenic load. Uh, the liver has a 45:31 toxygenic load. Uh, the liver has a couple of tricks up its sleeve. It 45:32 couple of tricks up its sleeve. It 45:32 couple of tricks up its sleeve. It produces something called HDL3. It 45:34 produces something called HDL3. It 45:34 produces something called HDL3. It produces LBP. Uh these are compounds to 45:37 produces LBP. Uh these are compounds to 45:37 produces LBP. Uh these are compounds to bind and try to neutralize the LPS 45:40 bind and try to neutralize the LPS 45:40 bind and try to neutralize the LPS specifically because most of it ends up 45:42 specifically because most of it ends up 45:42 specifically because most of it ends up going to the liver. But as your liver 45:44 going to the liver. But as your liver 45:44 going to the liver. But as your liver becomes dysfunctional, it can do that 45:47 becomes dysfunctional, it can do that 45:47 becomes dysfunctional, it can do that less and less and it can do that with 45:48 less and less and it can do that with 45:48 less and less and it can do that with with uh you know with without the same 45:51 with uh you know with without the same 45:51 with uh you know with without the same intensity. And so then you start getting 45:54 intensity. And so then you start getting 45:54 intensity. And so then you start getting fatty liver and this is one of the 45:55 fatty liver and this is one of the 45:55 fatty liver and this is one of the reasons why you know uh non-alcoholic 45:58 reasons why you know uh non-alcoholic 45:58 reasons why you know uh non-alcoholic fatty liver disease or as it's now known 46:00 fatty liver disease or as it's now known 46:00 fatty liver disease or as it's now known you know metabolic associated fatty 46:02 you know metabolic associated fatty 46:02 you know metabolic associated fatty liver disease um is so prevalent right 46:05 liver disease um is so prevalent right 46:05 liver disease um is so prevalent right somewhere around 60 65% adults have it 46:08 somewhere around 60 65% adults have it 46:08 somewhere around 60 65% adults have it uh and then steattosis steepitis those 46:11 uh and then steattosis steepitis those 46:11 uh and then steattosis steepitis those things are so prevalent now because our 46:14 things are so prevalent now because our 46:14 things are so prevalent now because our livers are undergoing a phenomenal 46:16 livers are undergoing a phenomenal 46:16 livers are undergoing a phenomenal amount of stress from the toxicity 46:19 amount of stress from the toxicity 46:19 amount of stress from the toxicity that's coming from the gut right Um, and 46:22 that's coming from the gut right Um, and 46:22 that's coming from the gut right Um, and so, you know, you you want to think 46:25 so, you know, you you want to think 46:25 so, you know, you you want to think about supporting your liver, but then 46:27 about supporting your liver, but then 46:27 about supporting your liver, but then you also want to think about, you know, 46:29 you also want to think about, you know, 46:29 you also want to think about, you know, your gut to provide your liver with a 46:31 your gut to provide your liver with a 46:32 your gut to provide your liver with a relief so that your gut doesn't start 46:34 relief so that your gut doesn't start 46:34 relief so that your gut doesn't start and continue to inundate the liver with 46:36 and continue to inundate the liver with 46:36 and continue to inundate the liver with toxicity because anytime you're 46:37 toxicity because anytime you're 46:37 toxicity because anytime you're detoxing, you need your liver to do it 46:39 detoxing, you need your liver to do it 46:39 detoxing, you need your liver to do it for you, right? So, um, that 46:42 for you, right? So, um, that 46:42 for you, right? So, um, that relationship, I think, you know, is not 46:44 relationship, I think, you know, is not 46:44 relationship, I think, you know, is not talked about enough out here in our 46:46 talked about enough out here in our 46:46 talked about enough out here in our world of of health and wellness. 46:49 world of of health and wellness. 46:49 world of of health and wellness. >> Absolutely. Yeah, I definitely 46:51 >> Absolutely. Yeah, I definitely 46:51 >> Absolutely. Yeah, I definitely appreciate that because yeah, we talk 46:53 appreciate that because yeah, we talk 46:53 appreciate that because yeah, we talk about liver support because the liver is 46:55 about liver support because the liver is 46:55 about liver support because the liver is our master detox organ, but it really 46:58 our master detox organ, but it really 46:58 our master detox organ, but it really all connects back to the gut. Yes. 47:02 all connects back to the gut. Yes. 47:02 all connects back to the gut. Yes. >> So, we talked about some underrated 47:04 >> So, we talked about some underrated 47:04 >> So, we talked about some underrated interventions already. Anything else 47:07 interventions already. Anything else 47:07 interventions already. Anything else that we haven't addressed that would 47:09 that we haven't addressed that would 47:09 that we haven't addressed that would actually move the needle for people 47:12 actually move the needle for people 47:12 actually move the needle for people >> um on their gut microbiome? 47:14 >> um on their gut microbiome? 47:14 >> um on their gut microbiome? >> Yeah. 47:14 >> Yeah. 47:14 >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Um I think a big thing is mindset, 47:17 >> Yeah. Um I think a big thing is mindset, 47:17 >> Yeah. Um I think a big thing is mindset, right? So, 47:20 right? So, 47:20 right? So, so we we create our reality quite a bit, 47:24 so we we create our reality quite a bit, 47:24 so we we create our reality quite a bit, right? 47:25 right? 47:25 right? >> Um, and I think one of the things I see 47:27 >> Um, and I think one of the things I see 47:27 >> Um, and I think one of the things I see very common in our space as I work with 47:30 very common in our space as I work with 47:30 very common in our space as I work with clinicians and and their patients and 47:32 clinicians and and their patients and 47:32 clinicians and and their patients and and of course work I I I encounter and 47:35 and of course work I I I encounter and 47:35 and of course work I I I encounter and engage with lots and lots of people in 47:36 engage with lots and lots of people in 47:36 engage with lots and lots of people in our both on social media, conferences 47:38 our both on social media, conferences 47:38 our both on social media, conferences and all that. People will often embed 47:43 and all that. People will often embed 47:43 and all that. People will often embed their identity with their condition, 47:45 their identity with their condition, 47:45 their identity with their condition, >> right? 47:46 >> right? 47:46 >> right? um like let's say they've been suffering 47:48 um like let's say they've been suffering 47:48 um like let's say they've been suffering with SIBO or mass cell or you know some 47:51 with SIBO or mass cell or you know some 47:51 with SIBO or mass cell or you know some condition like that they're effectively 47:53 condition like that they're effectively 47:53 condition like that they're effectively introducing themselves as a mass cell 47:56 introducing themselves as a mass cell 47:56 introducing themselves as a mass cell sufferer or a SIBO person right they're 47:59 sufferer or a SIBO person right they're 47:59 sufferer or a SIBO person right they're that's so ingrained in their identity 48:01 that's so ingrained in their identity 48:01 that's so ingrained in their identity that it becomes really hard to strip 48:04 that it becomes really hard to strip 48:04 that it becomes really hard to strip that from your reality right we we all 48:07 that from your reality right we we all 48:07 that from your reality right we we all know of the placebo effect and the power 48:09 know of the placebo effect and the power 48:09 know of the placebo effect and the power of that right so I've done lots of 48:12 of that right so I've done lots of 48:12 of that right so I've done lots of clinical trials as you know and and one 48:14 clinical trials as you know and and one 48:14 clinical trials as you know and and one of the things we're always trying to 48:16 of the things we're always trying to 48:16 of the things we're always trying to work around is the power of the placebo 48:19 work around is the power of the placebo 48:19 work around is the power of the placebo effect. Um, you know, if your mind 48:21 effect. Um, you know, if your mind 48:21 effect. Um, you know, if your mind believes something, it's going to change 48:23 believes something, it's going to change 48:23 believes something, it's going to change your biology to make that happen. And 48:27 your biology to make that happen. And 48:27 your biology to make that happen. And and as a result of that, if your mind 48:29 and as a result of that, if your mind 48:29 and as a result of that, if your mind believes you are sick and you are a sick 48:32 believes you are sick and you are a sick 48:32 believes you are sick and you are a sick person trying to get well all the time, 48:34 person trying to get well all the time, 48:34 person trying to get well all the time, you will remain a sick person, right? 48:36 you will remain a sick person, right? 48:36 you will remain a sick person, right? And and so really, you want to try to 48:39 And and so really, you want to try to 48:39 And and so really, you want to try to frame shift as much as you can. And I 48:41 frame shift as much as you can. And I 48:41 frame shift as much as you can. And I think there's a couple of things that 48:42 think there's a couple of things that 48:42 think there's a couple of things that you would do with that. Number one is di 48:44 you would do with that. Number one is di 48:44 you would do with that. Number one is di divorce the the diagnosis from you, 48:48 divorce the the diagnosis from you, 48:48 divorce the the diagnosis from you, right? From your personality, right? 48:50 right? From your personality, right? 48:50 right? From your personality, right? You're not so and so with mass cell 48:52 You're not so and so with mass cell 48:52 You're not so and so with mass cell activation, right? Syndrome. Um just 48:55 activation, right? Syndrome. Um just 48:55 activation, right? Syndrome. Um just just divorce your identity from that, 48:58 just divorce your identity from that, 48:58 just divorce your identity from that, right? U that's not your existence. 49:00 right? U that's not your existence. 49:00 right? U that's not your existence. That's not your reality. It's just a 49:02 That's not your reality. It's just a 49:02 That's not your reality. It's just a temporary thing that you're dealing 49:03 temporary thing that you're dealing 49:03 temporary thing that you're dealing with. Um and it and and the second part 49:06 with. Um and it and and the second part 49:06 with. Um and it and and the second part of it is is really around this um idea 49:12 of it is is really around this um idea 49:12 of it is is really around this um idea of um 49:15 of um 49:15 of um encountering every decision you make 49:18 encountering every decision you make 49:18 encountering every decision you make with that identity, right? So for 49:21 with that identity, right? So for 49:21 with that identity, right? So for example, 49:22 example, 49:22 example, people with mass cell activation, right? 49:25 people with mass cell activation, right? 49:25 people with mass cell activation, right? If I talk to them about trying something 49:27 If I talk to them about trying something 49:27 If I talk to them about trying something or, you know, taking an approach to it, 49:29 or, you know, taking an approach to it, 49:29 or, you know, taking an approach to it, their first response is almost always, 49:32 their first response is almost always, 49:32 their first response is almost always, I'm a I'm really sensitive to 49:35 I'm a I'm really sensitive to 49:35 I'm a I'm really sensitive to everything. So, how am I going to react 49:37 everything. So, how am I going to react 49:37 everything. So, how am I going to react to that? Just the fact that you've said 49:39 to that? Just the fact that you've said 49:39 to that? Just the fact that you've said that, you're going to react negatively, 49:40 that, you're going to react negatively, 49:40 that, you're going to react negatively, right? It's going to happen, right? So, 49:43 right? It's going to happen, right? So, 49:43 right? It's going to happen, right? So I I engage with people a lot on Instagram. Uh my handle is um 52:28 lot on Instagram. Uh my handle is um 52:28 lot on Instagram. Uh my handle is um Karen Biome Kir Rio M. But my new uh 52:32 Karen Biome Kir Rio M. But my new uh 52:32 Karen Biome Kir Rio M. But my new uh place, the biome learning center, um 52:35 place, the biome learning center, um 52:35 place, the biome learning center, um there we we've got courses for consumers 52:37 there we we've got courses for consumers 52:38 there we we've got courses for consumers and clinicians on the microbiome. Uh 52:40 and clinicians on the microbiome. Uh 52:40 and clinicians on the microbiome. Uh we've got a circle community which is 52:42 we've got a circle community which is 52:42 we've got a circle community which is free to join and then there's tiers of 52:44 free to join and then there's tiers of 52:44 free to join and then there's tiers of different things and we've got lots of 52:46 different things and we've got lots of 52:46 different things and we've got lots of practitioners in there and thousands of 52:48 practitioners in there and thousands of 52:48 practitioners in there and thousands of consumers. So 52:54 that in the biome learning center. So 52:54 that in the biome learning center. So that is biomec 52:56 that is biomec 52:56 that is biomec bomc.com. 52:59 bomc.com. 52:59 bomc.com. So that's another great resource and we 53:01 So that's another great resource and we 53:01 So that's another great resource and we just launched it in uh February. So uh 53:05 just launched it in uh February. So uh 53:05 just launched it in uh February. So uh come and join us and join that community 53:07 come and join us and join that community 53:07 come and join us and join that community and then we'll continue to to put out uh 53:09 and then we'll continue to to put out uh 53:09 and then we'll continue to to put out uh a lot more educational material and all 53:11 a lot more educational material and all 53:12 a lot more educational material and all that so you can empower yourself to 53:13 that so you can empower yourself to 53:13 that so you can empower yourself to understand what the decisions are you 53:15 understand what the decisions are you 53:15 understand what the decisions are you need to make dayto-day, right? Because 53:17 need to make dayto-day, right? Because 53:17 need to make dayto-day, right? Because that's like my whole thing about the the 53:20 that's like my whole thing about the the 53:20 that's like my whole thing about the the microbiome is that you know a healthy 53:23 microbiome is that you know a healthy 53:23 microbiome is that you know a healthy microbiome comes about from lots of 53:26 microbiome comes about from lots of 53:26 microbiome comes about from lots of little decisions you're making every 53:27 little decisions you're making every 53:27 little decisions you're making every day, right? what you eat, what you put 53:29 day, right? what you eat, what you put 53:29 day, right? what you eat, what you put on, what you surround yourself with, 53:31 on, what you surround yourself with, 53:31 on, what you surround yourself with, what you drink, all that stuff. That's 53:33 what you drink, all that stuff. That's 53:33 what you drink, all that stuff. That's the stuff that ultimately cumulatively 53:35 the stuff that ultimately cumulatively 53:35 the stuff that ultimately cumulatively moves the needle on things. So, you need 53:37 moves the needle on things. So, you need 53:37 moves the needle on things. So, you need to have a certain baseline level of 53:39 to have a certain baseline level of 53:39 to have a certain baseline level of knowledge and understanding to make 53:41 knowledge and understanding to make 53:41 knowledge and understanding to make those right decisions. Um, and so my 53:44 those right decisions. Um, and so my 53:44 those right decisions. Um, and so my goal is to provide people with baseline 53:46 goal is to provide people with baseline 53:46 goal is to provide people with baseline level understanding about their 53:47 level understanding about their 53:47 level understanding about their microbiome and this ecosystem so they 53:50 microbiome and this ecosystem so they 53:50 microbiome and this ecosystem so they understand what the right decisions are. 53:52 understand what the right decisions are. 53:52 understand what the right decisions are. >> Amazing.
