Stress is not just a mental-health problem but a broad biological signal that tells you to check your environment — it’s fundamentally about adaptation. It can be helpful (eustress) — motivating, improving performance and resilience — or harmful (distress) when it’s excessive or chronic. Stress includes psychological/internal stressors and physiological stressors; for example, exercise is a form of hormetic (beneficial) physiological stress that makes you stronger. Evolutionarily, stress exists to protect and adapt you, not to harm you, which is why some people perform better under pressure. The key is distinguishing acute, adaptive stress from prolonged, maladaptive stress and taking steps to reduce or manage chronic stress when it appears.
