Stress is a ubiquitous, adaptive warning signal — it can be helpful (eustress) or harmful (distress) depending on its type, intensity, and duration. Stress includes external/psychological and internal/physiological forms (e.g., inflammation, genetic sensitivity), and some stressors like exercise are hormetic — small insults that make you stronger. Problems arise when acute stress becomes chronic or when stress is “too much, too fast,” producing overwhelm and long‑term physiological change. To manage stress, increase resilience rather than trying to eliminate all stress: do an inventory of your stressors, separate those that deplete you from those that energize you, and aim for a Goldilocks zone of just‑right challenge. Small, deliberate exposures to beneficial stress (learning, deadlines, exercise) can build tolerance to harmful stress, while reducing ongoing, compounding stressors prevents systemic damage.
