Stress is a natural, ubiquitous adaptive response that can be either beneficial (eustress) or harmful (distress). It serves as a warning sign that something is out of balance—psychological or physiological—and prompts the body to adapt (for example, exercise is a hormetic stress that makes you stronger). Acute stress can be useful and performance-enhancing, but when small stressors compound day after day (or a stressor is too intense or too fast), they produce chronic, systemic damage. The harmful turning point is overwhelm—either too much for too long or too much too fast—which changes biology and impairs function. Practical approaches are to build resilience rather than eliminate stress: take an inventory of your stressors, categorize them into depleting vs energizing, aim for your personal “Goldilocks” zone of challenge, and deliberately add manageable, growth-oriented stressors to strengthen your capacity.
