Stress is your body's ubiquitous, adaptive warning system that signals an imbalance or demand — it can help you survive and grow or, if mismanaged, harm you. Some stress is beneficial (eustress) — think exercise, deadlines that boost performance, or deliberately stretching yourself — while distress is overwhelming or damaging. Stress can be psychological or physiological and can come from external sources (work, relationships) or internal ones (genetics, inflammation, biochemical sensitivity). Occasional acute stress is usually recoverable, but repeated day‑in/day‑out stress compounds and produces systemic changes in physiology. Harm generally arises from overwhelm — when stress is too much for too long or when something is too intense too fast — which can push the nervous system toward shutdown. The goal is not to eliminate stress but to build resilience and find your personal “Goldilocks” zone of stress that challenges without overwhelming you.
