Antibodies, also known as immunoglobulins, are specialized proteins produced by the immune system in response to the presence of foreign substances called antigens. These antigens can be bacteria, viruses, or other harmful substances. Antibodies play a crucial role in defending the body against infections by recognizing and binding to specific antigens. They can neutralize pathogens directly, mark them for destruction by other immune cells, or activate other components of the immune system to eliminate the threat. Antibodies are highly diverse and can recognize a wide range of antigens. They are essential for immunity and are often harnessed in diagnostic tests and therapies, such as antibody-based drugs and vaccines.
