Blood sugar levels refer to the concentration of glucose (sugar) present in the bloodstream. Glucose serves as the primary source of energy for cells, and its levels are tightly regulated by hormones like insulin and glucagon. Abnormal blood sugar levels can be indicative of various health conditions. Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) is a hallmark of diabetes mellitus and can lead to complications affecting the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and blood vessels. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) can occur in people with diabetes who take insulin or certain medications, and it can cause symptoms like shakiness, confusion, and dizziness.
