Constipation is a common digestive issue characterized by infrequent or difficult bowel movements. It occurs when the colon absorbs too much water from the food, leading to hard and dry stool that is challenging to pass. Causes of constipation can vary and may include a lack of fiber in the diet, inadequate fluid intake, a sedentary lifestyle, certain medications, and underlying medical conditions. In most cases, constipation can be managed through lifestyle changes such as increasing fiber intake, staying hydrated, and engaging in regular physical activity. Over-the-counter laxatives may also provide short-term relief, but their prolonged use should be discussed with a healthcare professional to avoid dependency.
