Diarrhea is a common condition characterized by frequent, loose, and watery bowel movements. It occurs when the digestive system is unable to properly absorb water or nutrients or when it overproduces fluid. Acute diarrhea is usually caused by a viral, bacterial, or parasitic infection, often transmitted through contaminated food or water. It can also result from certain medications, food intolerances, or stress. Chronic diarrhea, lasting for more than two weeks, may be a sign of an underlying condition such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or malabsorption disorders. Symptoms associated with diarrhea include abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea, and dehydration. Treatment focuses on rehydration, dietary adjustments, and addressing the underlying cause if necessary.
