Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a crucial role in regulating various physiological processes, including mood, appetite, sleep, and pain perception. It is often referred to as the "feel-good" neurotransmitter due to its association with feelings of well-being and happiness. Serotonin is synthesized in the brain and is involved in the communication between nerve cells. Imbalances or deficiencies in serotonin levels have been implicated in various mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Medications, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), are commonly used to increase serotonin levels and improve mood. Additionally, lifestyle factors such as regular exercise, exposure to sunlight, and a balanced diet can support healthy serotonin levels.
