Helping Kids Overcome Vaccine Fear: Queenie Gets Her Shots
Starting school is a massive milestone for any five-year-old, but the fear of getting shots can be a major hurdle for many families. In this video, we explore a powerful new tool designed to turn that anxiety into confidence through the story of Queenie Gets Her Shots. This coloring book is changing the narrative around childhood immunizations and empowering the next generation.
This unique project is more than just a storybook; it is a community-driven initiative authored by Jennifer King and illustrated by Dr. Auan Mance. Supported by the African-American Wellness Project, the book aims to bridge the gap in health equity by providing culturally resonant and trusted information to the community. It specifically addresses the deep-seated hesitancy toward the medical system by educating children and families in a relatable and supportive way.
The story follows young Queenie as she navigates her fear of needles. Rather than simply being told to be brave, Queenie learns about the science of vaccines from her friends and family. Most importantly, the book highlights the historical contributions of Black pioneers in immunization, turning a routine medical requirement into a moment of cultural pride. By empowering our children with knowledge, we help them stay healthy, stay in school, and stay fearless.
