Sleep disorders are conditions that disrupt the amount or quality of sleep and include insomnia, restless legs syndrome (RLS), REM sleep behavior disorder, and sleep apnea (obstructive and central). Insomnia involves trouble falling or staying asleep or waking too early; RLS causes an uncomfortable urge to move the legs that worsens at night; REM sleep behavior disorder leads to acting out dreams and can cause injury; obstructive sleep apnea occurs when throat muscles relax and block the airway, while central sleep apnea is a failure of the brain to send breathing signals. These disorders can fragment REM and deep (slow-wave) sleep, causing daytime fatigue and impairing mood, memory, learning, and overall functioning, and they are common and impactful in conditions like Parkinson’s disease. Sleep problems often coexist (for example sleep apnea plus insomnia), so evaluation is important to identify all contributors. Management depends on the cause and may include treatments like CPAP for obstructive sleep apnea, medications or iron repletion for RLS, behavioral therapies for insomnia and sleep anxiety, and consistent sleep schedules to preserve REM and overall sleep architecture—see a sleep specialist if symptoms are significant or causing injury.
