A sleep disorder is any condition that disrupts normal sleep architecture or the ability to fall or stay asleep and that leads to impaired daytime function. Common examples mentioned in the provided content include insomnia (difficulty falling or staying asleep), restless legs syndrome (an intense urge to move the legs, worse at night), obstructive and central sleep apnea (repeated airway collapse or failure of breathing drive), and REM sleep behavior disorder (acting out dreams, sometimes violently). These disorders can reduce positive mood, impair memory and learning, worsen daytime fatigue, and — in conditions like Parkinson’s disease — exacerbate motor and cognitive symptoms. REM sleep is especially important for emotional regulation and memory and predominates in the second half of the night, so inconsistent schedules or cutting morning sleep can disproportionately remove REM. If you have symptoms (frequent awakenings, daytime sleepiness, leg urges, pauses in breathing, dream enactment, or sleep anxiety), seek evaluation because multiple sleep disorders can coexist and addressing underlying causes and sleep habits (regular schedule, breaking sleep anxiety) is often necessary.
