Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. It can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term). Acute insomnia is often caused by temporary factors such as stress, jet lag, or certain medications. Chronic insomnia is typically a result of underlying health conditions, psychological factors, or poor sleep habits. Common symptoms of insomnia include difficulty falling asleep, waking up frequently during the night, waking up too early in the morning, fatigue, irritability, and impaired daytime functioning. Treatment for insomnia involves identifying and addressing the underlying causes, practicing good sleep hygiene, and implementing behavioral and cognitive techniques. In some cases, medication may be prescribed for short-term relief.
