After 50,000 Patients, I Noticed This About Statins…

- Whether you have already had a heart attack changes the entire statin conversation. Your starting risk sets the size of any benefit that is even possible. Someone prescribed a statin after a heart attack or a stent is in a very different position from someone prescribed one because a single number looked high.
- A 21% headline and 989 out of 1,000 can describe the same statin trial. In a pooled analysis of roughly 175,000 people, that 21% reduction came to about 11 fewer events per 1,000 treated over five years among those at lower risk. The second framing is the one that describes you.
- A symptom that starts after a new statin prescription deserves an investigation. Muscle pain, fatigue, brain fog or blood sugar changes that begin after you start or raise a dose are worth tracking. A normal CK result does not rule it out. Never stop or change a prescription on your own.
