Anger Is Not the Problem. The Blowup Is. | Hotness Ep 11

Women’s Midlife Health Expert & Board-Certified OB/GYN in Private Practice
Anger is not the enemy.
It is information.
It is a signal.
It tells us something matters.
The real problem starts when anger turns into behaviors that damage connection:
→ Yelling
→ Shutting down
→ Blaming
→ Retaliating
→ Trying to hurt the other person back
In this episode of Hotness Podcast, I sit down with therapist Paul Gutrecht for one of the most practical conversations we’ve had yet about conflict, relationships, emotional regulation, and what healthy communication actually looks like.
We unpack why “anger management” is often misunderstood… and why it should really be called angry behavior management.
Inside this episode, we cover:
✨ Why anger itself is not the real issue
✨ The difference between feeling anger and acting destructively
✨ Why many men don’t realize the impact their anger has on their partner
✨ How breathing changes your nervous system during conflict
✨ Why taking a break during an argument can actually save the conversation
✨ How to stop fighting to win and start communicating to connect
✨ Why remembering the real goal changes everything
Sometimes the goal is not being right.
It is protecting connection.
And sometimes the strongest thing you can do…
is pause long enough to stop hurting the person in front of you.
Because healthy relationships are not built by avoiding conflict.
They are built by learning how to move through conflict without destroying trust.

enjoy my discussion with Paul Goodrich. enjoy my discussion with Paul Goodrich. Paul Goodrich, welcome to Hotness. Paul Goodrich, welcome to Hotness. Paul Goodrich, welcome to Hotness. >> Thank you, Liz. I'm really glad to be >> Thank you, Liz. I'm really glad to be >> Thank you, Liz. I'm really glad to be here. here. here. >> Delighted to have this conversation with >> Delighted to have this conversation with >> Delighted to have this conversation with you. I know that you work a lot with men you. I know that you work a lot with men you. I know that you work a lot with men and I want to focus on the special work and I want to focus on the special work and I want to focus on the special work that you do with men and anger. I think that you do with men and anger. I think that you do with men and anger. I think that's a real interest to my audience.
that's a real interest to my audience. that's a real interest to my audience. I'm definitely fascinated by that. And I'm definitely fascinated by that. And I'm definitely fascinated by that. And so I want to start out by asking you, so I want to start out by asking you, so I want to start out by asking you, what are some skills that you teach men what are some skills that you teach men what are some skills that you teach men about anger and and then we'll go from about anger and and then we'll go from about anger and and then we'll go from there, right? And I know you have there, right? And I know you have there, right? And I know you have something to say about the phrase anger something to say about the phrase anger something to say about the phrase anger management. So let me let you jump off management. So let me let you jump off management. So let me let you jump off from there.
from there. from there. >> Absolutely. So it is mostly men that I >> Absolutely. So it is mostly men that I >> Absolutely. So it is mostly men that I work with either individually or in work with either individually or in work with either individually or in couples. I do have some women who reach couples. I do have some women who reach couples. I do have some women who reach out. So there are some women that I work out. So there are some women that I work out. So there are some women that I work with as well and obviously in a lot of with as well and obviously in a lot of with as well and obviously in a lot of couples. And so really the first thing I couples. And so really the first thing I couples. And so really the first thing I want to do is raise awareness and I want want to do is raise awareness and I want want to do is raise awareness and I want to raise awareness around the emotion of to raise awareness around the emotion of to raise awareness around the emotion of anger that that's okay to have. The anger that that's okay to have. The anger that that's okay to have. The emotion is a signal. It gives us energy emotion is a signal. It gives us energy emotion is a signal. It gives us energy to make change. Challenge is is that to make change. Challenge is is that to make change. Challenge is is that sometimes the action urge some cases a sometimes the action urge some cases a sometimes the action urge some cases a lot of times becomes something that's lot of times becomes something that's lot of times becomes something that's not so constructive and more not so constructive and more not so constructive and more destructive. So, I like to say this destructive. So, I like to say this destructive. So, I like to say this should really be about angry behavior should really be about angry behavior should really be about angry behavior management. They never caught on. It's management. They never caught on. It's management. They never caught on. It's too many syllables, I guess. So, we're too many syllables, I guess. So, we're too many syllables, I guess. So, we're stuck with anger management, but that stuck with anger management, but that stuck with anger management, but that kind of gives a bad rap to the emotion.
kind of gives a bad rap to the emotion. kind of gives a bad rap to the emotion. One of the first things I do is raise One of the first things I do is raise One of the first things I do is raise awareness that it is okay to have the awareness that it is okay to have the awareness that it is okay to have the emotion of anger. It's signaling you emotion of anger. It's signaling you emotion of anger. It's signaling you that something's up. Maybe something is that something's up. Maybe something is that something's up. Maybe something is wrong and you want to make some change.
Breathing and Pausing in Conflict 3:29
wrong and you want to make some change. wrong and you want to make some change. Then the next step is how you're going Then the next step is how you're going Then the next step is how you're going to do that. What's going to be most to do that. What's going to be most to do that. What's going to be most effective? Yes, I totally get that. What effective? Yes, I totally get that. What effective? Yes, I totally get that. What are some tools that you teach men are some tools that you teach men are some tools that you teach men specifically specifically specifically to use in the moment? They're feeling to use in the moment? They're feeling to use in the moment? They're feeling the emotion of anger. What can they do the emotion of anger. What can they do the emotion of anger. What can they do right in the moment? Obviously, this right in the moment? Obviously, this right in the moment? Obviously, this will apply to women also, but I would will apply to women also, but I would will apply to women also, but I would like to know specifically with men.
like to know specifically with men. like to know specifically with men. >> Yeah. And and I confess that I'm not so >> Yeah. And and I confess that I'm not so >> Yeah. And and I confess that I'm not so sure how how I adjust this differently sure how how I adjust this differently sure how how I adjust this differently for men and women. I think it's fairly for men and women. I think it's fairly for men and women. I think it's fairly universal, but we'll see. So, really, universal, but we'll see. So, really, universal, but we'll see. So, really, one of the first things is when we one of the first things is when we one of the first things is when we react, we usually want to say something.
react, we usually want to say something. react, we usually want to say something. Now when we speak we are inhaling in Now when we speak we are inhaling in Now when we speak we are inhaling in order to exhale with language. So the order to exhale with language. So the order to exhale with language. So the first thing I ask everybody to do is first thing I ask everybody to do is first thing I ask everybody to do is just exhale just breathe out without just exhale just breathe out without just exhale just breathe out without that thing you're going to say. Okay. So that thing you're going to say. Okay. So that thing you're going to say. Okay. So that's the very first thing our breath that's the very first thing our breath that's the very first thing our breath it's ancient exercise it's ancient skill it's ancient exercise it's ancient skill it's ancient exercise it's ancient skill work to just come back to our core and work to just come back to our core and work to just come back to our core and it really grounds us. So that's the very it really grounds us. So that's the very it really grounds us. So that's the very first thing. You're going to take that first thing. You're going to take that first thing. You're going to take that first breath and then you're going to first breath and then you're going to first breath and then you're going to take maybe two or three more before you take maybe two or three more before you take maybe two or three more before you say anything. And during that time, what say anything. And during that time, what say anything. And during that time, what you're going to focus on is what is my you're going to focus on is what is my you're going to focus on is what is my goal here? Because what happens a lot of goal here? Because what happens a lot of goal here? Because what happens a lot of the time is that if I get hurt or angry the time is that if I get hurt or angry the time is that if I get hurt or angry in an exchange, the goal that I had in in an exchange, the goal that I had in in an exchange, the goal that I had in this conversation to talk about weekend this conversation to talk about weekend this conversation to talk about weekend plans, child rearing, finances goes out plans, child rearing, finances goes out plans, child rearing, finances goes out the window. Now that I'm hurt, my new the window. Now that I'm hurt, my new the window. Now that I'm hurt, my new goal is hurt back. And that's a hijack.
goal is hurt back. And that's a hijack. goal is hurt back. And that's a hijack. I call that emotional hijack. And we I call that emotional hijack. And we I call that emotional hijack. And we want to avoid it. So the way we can want to avoid it. So the way we can want to avoid it. So the way we can avoid it is by taking a few breaths to avoid it is by taking a few breaths to avoid it is by taking a few breaths to remember what is my goal here. remember what is my goal here. remember what is my goal here. That's that's really one of the first That's that's really one of the first That's that's really one of the first things. Yes, I've done that in difficult things. Yes, I've done that in difficult things. Yes, I've done that in difficult conversations that I've had, not just conversations that I've had, not just conversations that I've had, not just with men or with partners, but in any with men or with partners, but in any with men or with partners, but in any situation where it might be challenging situation where it might be challenging situation where it might be challenging is I'll make a little note on my phone, is I'll make a little note on my phone, is I'll make a little note on my phone, the notes app, and just like with the the notes app, and just like with the the notes app, and just like with the topic or a post-it note, just to keep
Whole Expression and Direct Communication 5:34
topic or a post-it note, just to keep topic or a post-it note, just to keep that right in front of me also so that I that right in front of me also so that I that right in front of me also so that I remember to say what I wanted to say. remember to say what I wanted to say. remember to say what I wanted to say. So, does that go along with that? If I So, does that go along with that? If I So, does that go along with that? If I have something difficult to say, have something difficult to say, have something difficult to say, sometimes I'll even if I'm really being sometimes I'll even if I'm really being sometimes I'll even if I'm really being disciplined, I'll start with that. That disciplined, I'll start with that. That disciplined, I'll start with that. That way I don't stall and kind of dance way I don't stall and kind of dance way I don't stall and kind of dance around it. Is that is that helpful in around it. Is that is that helpful in around it. Is that is that helpful in >> I think it can be.
>> I think it can be. >> I think it can be. >> Well, the challenge is when I'm staking >> Well, the challenge is when I'm staking >> Well, the challenge is when I'm staking out territory, when I'm saying what I out territory, when I'm saying what I out territory, when I'm saying what I need to say and understanding that it's need to say and understanding that it's need to say and understanding that it's difficult, just want to have my difficult, just want to have my difficult, just want to have my awareness up awareness up awareness up >> that there may be some reaction from the >> that there may be some reaction from the >> that there may be some reaction from the other person.
other person. other person. So, one thing that I joke in my anger So, one thing that I joke in my anger So, one thing that I joke in my anger management group is I say after all management group is I say after all management group is I say after all these sessions, if you decide not to these sessions, if you decide not to these sessions, if you decide not to change any of your behavior, you're at change any of your behavior, you're at change any of your behavior, you're at least going to be aware that your least going to be aware that your least going to be aware that your behavior has consequences, more behavior has consequences, more behavior has consequences, more consequences than you thought. So, it consequences than you thought. So, it consequences than you thought. So, it can be very helpful to be direct and can be very helpful to be direct and can be very helpful to be direct and hopefully with the other person raising hopefully with the other person raising hopefully with the other person raising their awareness around their possible their awareness around their possible their awareness around their possible reactivity and working on how they reactivity and working on how they reactivity and working on how they communicate, they're going to be able to communicate, they're going to be able to communicate, they're going to be able to respond to that direct message.
respond to that direct message. respond to that direct message. >> And do you have the opportunity and do >> And do you have the opportunity and do >> And do you have the opportunity and do you go I'm assuming you go underneath you go I'm assuming you go underneath you go I'm assuming you go underneath because there's a lot of emotions that because there's a lot of emotions that because there's a lot of emotions that can be underneath anger. Can you say a can be underneath anger. Can you say a can be underneath anger. Can you say a little bit about that? You know, I do little bit about that? You know, I do little bit about that? You know, I do think anger is a primary emotion if not think anger is a primary emotion if not think anger is a primary emotion if not a primal emotion. But there's a lot of a primal emotion. But there's a lot of a primal emotion. But there's a lot of talk in literature out there around talk in literature out there around talk in literature out there around anger being a secondary emotion covering anger being a secondary emotion covering anger being a secondary emotion covering sadness or shame. Okay. So those two sadness or shame. Okay. So those two sadness or shame. Okay. So those two things are about things are about things are about >> sadness, shame. What about fear?
>> sadness, shame. What about fear? >> sadness, shame. What about fear? >> Absolutely. Fear as well. >> Absolutely. Fear as well. >> Absolutely. Fear as well. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Hurt, loss of power. >> Okay. Hurt, loss of power. >> Okay. Hurt, loss of power. >> I'm going to go back then. I mean I and >> I'm going to go back then. I mean I and >> I'm going to go back then. I mean I and I'll so this is a little go back of I'll so this is a little go back of I'll so this is a little go back of >> sure that >> sure that >> sure that >> the secondary emotion of anger then can >> the secondary emotion of anger then can >> the secondary emotion of anger then can cover sadness, shame or fear.
cover sadness, shame or fear. cover sadness, shame or fear. >> Sure. Yeah. Absolutely. And we just know >> Sure. Yeah. Absolutely. And we just know >> Sure. Yeah. Absolutely. And we just know there's a lot to being human, right? there's a lot to being human, right? there's a lot to being human, right? It's hard being human. It's hard being human. It's hard being human. >> Absolutely. And we find those things so >> Absolutely. And we find those things so >> Absolutely. And we find those things so vulnerable that we try to defend against vulnerable that we try to defend against vulnerable that we try to defend against feeling those things or revealing those feeling those things or revealing those feeling those things or revealing those things because there's a lot in the things because there's a lot in the things because there's a lot in the culture about I need to be together. I culture about I need to be together. I culture about I need to be together. I need to look strong and so forth.
need to look strong and so forth. need to look strong and so forth. >> I'm so glad you brought that up. >> I'm so glad you brought that up. >> I'm so glad you brought that up. Tell say a little more about that. What Tell say a little more about that. What Tell say a little more about that. What you think is happening? Do you think you think is happening? Do you think you think is happening? Do you think that emotional regulation is taught less that emotional regulation is taught less that emotional regulation is taught less to boys or maybe it's that girls are to boys or maybe it's that girls are to boys or maybe it's that girls are culturally trained to just stay quiet?
culturally trained to just stay quiet? culturally trained to just stay quiet? It's a little it's interesting It's a little it's interesting It's a little it's interesting territory. What do you talk about in
Safety, Breaks, and Distress Tolerance 8:14
territory. What do you talk about in territory. What do you talk about in that area? So speaking anecdotally, I do that area? So speaking anecdotally, I do that area? So speaking anecdotally, I do think in the culture there's less think in the culture there's less think in the culture there's less training for boys around expression of training for boys around expression of training for boys around expression of emotion and more training to hold it in emotion and more training to hold it in emotion and more training to hold it in and look a certain way and be a certain and look a certain way and be a certain and look a certain way and be a certain way. And I think there is more cultural way. And I think there is more cultural way. And I think there is more cultural messaging for women to have less messaging for women to have less messaging for women to have less expression of those things. I think that expression of those things. I think that expression of those things. I think that we experience that. And so the question we experience that. And so the question we experience that. And so the question is how we work on our communication, how is how we work on our communication, how is how we work on our communication, how we bring things out into the we bring things out into the we bring things out into the relationship that's in between us, relationship that's in between us, relationship that's in between us, that's not just inside me or inside the that's not just inside me or inside the that's not just inside me or inside the other person, but in between us that other person, but in between us that other person, but in between us that we're working on together.
we're working on together. we're working on together. >> I am extremely obsessed and fascinated >> I am extremely obsessed and fascinated >> I am extremely obsessed and fascinated with masculine feminine especially with masculine feminine especially with masculine feminine especially masculine feminine energies. Obviously, masculine feminine energies. Obviously, masculine feminine energies. Obviously, women and men both have both masculine women and men both have both masculine women and men both have both masculine and feminine energy, and that comes into and feminine energy, and that comes into and feminine energy, and that comes into play when there's like a DNA level. And play when there's like a DNA level. And play when there's like a DNA level. And I I don't like being completely I I don't like being completely I I don't like being completely heteronormative in my conversations, but heteronormative in my conversations, but heteronormative in my conversations, but I'm talking a lot about male, female, I'm talking a lot about male, female, I'm talking a lot about male, female, men and women, couples, whether it's a men and women, couples, whether it's a men and women, couples, whether it's a work relationship or an intimate work relationship or an intimate work relationship or an intimate relationship, but there's there's some relationship, but there's there's some relationship, but there's there's some degree of DNA, I think, programming degree of DNA, I think, programming degree of DNA, I think, programming going on there. So well we can talk going on there. So well we can talk going on there. So well we can talk about that another time but I think that about that another time but I think that about that another time but I think that makes it difficult with the expectations makes it difficult with the expectations makes it difficult with the expectations right the woman she could feel right the woman she could feel right the woman she could feel frightened if a man is expressing his frightened if a man is expressing his frightened if a man is expressing his anger. What is a way that that can be anger. What is a way that that can be anger. What is a way that that can be framed in a conversation or in a setting framed in a conversation or in a setting framed in a conversation or in a setting that would help?
that would help? that would help? >> Okay. And by the way I want to mention >> Okay. And by the way I want to mention >> Okay. And by the way I want to mention I've worked with same-sex couples. So I've worked with same-sex couples. So I've worked with same-sex couples. So these dynamics that were putting these these dynamics that were putting these these dynamics that were putting these tr masculine and feminine on they they tr masculine and feminine on they they tr masculine and feminine on they they present themselves in samesex couples as present themselves in samesex couples as present themselves in samesex couples as well. So I think this is all applicable.
well. So I think this is all applicable. well. So I think this is all applicable. Okay. So but if one person is Okay. So but if one person is Okay. So but if one person is experiencing fear okay now we're going experiencing fear okay now we're going experiencing fear okay now we're going to come down to communication. First of to come down to communication. First of to come down to communication. First of all I think it's important for everybody all I think it's important for everybody all I think it's important for everybody to feel safe in the communication. So it to feel safe in the communication. So it to feel safe in the communication. So it can be hard to let the other person know can be hard to let the other person know can be hard to let the other person know that you're feeling scared right now.
that you're feeling scared right now. that you're feeling scared right now. Okay. I'm feeling scared right now is a Okay. I'm feeling scared right now is a Okay. I'm feeling scared right now is a perfectly valid thing to say. And in my perfectly valid thing to say. And in my perfectly valid thing to say. And in my training in dialectical behavior training in dialectical behavior training in dialectical behavior therapy, all of our emotions are valid. therapy, all of our emotions are valid. therapy, all of our emotions are valid. It's just that our perceptions vary. And It's just that our perceptions vary. And It's just that our perceptions vary. And so the perceptions can be debatable. But so the perceptions can be debatable. But so the perceptions can be debatable. But the emotion that we're having is the the emotion that we're having is the the emotion that we're having is the emotion we're having in real time. So emotion we're having in real time. So emotion we're having in real time. So what can be challenging is if someone what can be challenging is if someone what can be challenging is if someone says, "I'm feeling scared right now."
says, "I'm feeling scared right now." says, "I'm feeling scared right now." that the other person may dismiss it, that the other person may dismiss it, that the other person may dismiss it, minimize it, or express contempt for minimize it, or express contempt for minimize it, or express contempt for that emotion. So, it's a challenge. So, that emotion. So, it's a challenge. So, that emotion. So, it's a challenge. So, what I want to talk about real quick is what I want to talk about real quick is what I want to talk about real quick is a tool that comes from an amazing book a tool that comes from an amazing book a tool that comes from an amazing book that I learned about over a decade ago.
that I learned about over a decade ago. that I learned about over a decade ago. It's called messages. Okay? All you have It's called messages. Okay? All you have It's called messages. Okay? All you have to do is remember to do is remember to do is remember >> put it in the we'll put it in the show >> put it in the we'll put it in the show >> put it in the we'll put it in the show notes. notes. notes. >> Great. Messages by McKay at all. There's >> Great. Messages by McKay at all. There's >> Great. Messages by McKay at all. There's a couple other authors. So we usually a couple other authors. So we usually a couple other authors. So we usually get lost in our opinions and
DBT TIPP Skills for Regulation 11:20
get lost in our opinions and get lost in our opinions and perspectives and so we don't talk about perspectives and so we don't talk about perspectives and so we don't talk about how we're feeling and we don't talk how we're feeling and we don't talk how we're feeling and we don't talk about what we need. And these are two about what we need. And these are two about what we need. And these are two important elements of a whole important elements of a whole important elements of a whole expression. We don't need a whole expression all the time.
need a whole expression all the time. need a whole expression all the time. And we go to the mechanic, they don't And we go to the mechanic, they don't And we go to the mechanic, they don't need to know how we're feeling. But in need to know how we're feeling.
