How to Choose a Calcium Supplement You Can Trust | Pharmacist
How can you tell whether a calcium supplement is trustworthy?
Clinical pharmacist Jennifer Han, PharmD, walks through the qualities she considers most important: responsible ingredient sourcing, traceability, safety testing, label accuracy, and evidence-informed formulation.
Jennifer also explains how a food-based calcium chew can concentrate calcium from milk minerals while retaining naturally occurring nutrients. She discusses a formulation containing 500 mg of dietary calcium, the removal of more than 99% of its lactose, and the wider nutrient team involved in bone health—including vitamin D, vitamin K2, magnesium, protein, and fiber.
In this conversation:
• Why the source of a supplement matters
• Ingredient traceability and supplier quality
• Safety testing and label accuracy
• Milk-mineral calcium and lactose sensitivity
• Calcium, vitamin D, K2, and magnesium
• Protein, fiber, and the larger bone-health picture

With that in mind, we With that in mind, we use use use milk minerals as a milk minerals as a milk minerals as a source of our source of our source of our calcium, phosphorus, calcium, phosphorus, calcium, phosphorus, copper, magnesium, iron, copper, magnesium, iron, copper, magnesium, iron, zinc—all zinc—all zinc—all natural minerals natural minerals natural minerals found in milk. We found in milk. We found in milk. We use a use a use a process where, process where, process where, if you imagine a glass of if you imagine a glass of if you imagine a glass of milk, we remove milk, we remove milk, we remove all the liquid, fat, and all the liquid, fat, and all the liquid, fat, and even protein, even protein, even protein, leaving only the leaving only the leaving only the mineral composition of mineral composition of mineral composition of the milk. So this the milk. So this the milk. So this visualization is very visualization is very visualization is very important because it important because it important because it allows people with allows people with dairy sensitivities dairy sensitivities to consume our to consume our calcium chewable tablets because we calcium chewable tablets because we only use only use only use dairy minerals. There is dairy minerals. There is dairy minerals. There is no fat, which no fat, which no fat, which usually causes usually causes usually causes sensitivity in people, sensitivity in people, sensitivity in people, or the proteins you or the proteins you or the proteins you mentioned. Because it's mentioned. Because it's mentioned. Because it's not in the ingredients, not in the ingredients, not in the ingredients, many customers many customers many customers tell us, "Oh, I tell us, "Oh, I tell us, "Oh, I had a dairy sensitivity for so many years had a dairy sensitivity for so many years , but I could , but I could eat your eat your eat your milk supplement." So, binds it to the bones. So, binds it to the bones. So, these four, and of course these four, and of course these four, and of course there are other cofactors that are there are other cofactors that are there are other cofactors that are also involved in also involved in also involved in this process.
