Why One Concussion Can Change Your Brain for Years
Concussions Affect More Than the Brain Dr. O'Tool explains that concussions can impair proprioception, reaction time, and motor control, increasing the likelihood of lower-extremity injuries such as ACL tears. Research suggests that 70–80% of athletes experience a lower-extremity injury within a year after a concussion if neurological function isn't fully restored. Functional Neurology Focuses on Restoring Brain Function Rather than simply looking for structural disease, functional neurology works to improve communication within brain networks through neuroplasticity. Treatments may include visual rehabilitation, vestibular therapy, cognitive exercises, balance training, chiropractic care, and other neurological rehabilitation techniques. Healthy Lifestyle Habits Are Powerful Brain Medicine Sleep, regular movement, proper nutrition, reduced screen time, strong neck muscles, and neuro-visual training all play important roles in reducing concussion risk and supporting recovery. Dr. O'Tool emphasizes that simple daily habits often provide the greatest long-term benefits for brain health.
Experts talk about how toxic mold is
There is a compound produced by mold that is so immunosuppressive, modern medicine uses a version of it to keep transplant patients alive. It's called mycophenolic acid. When mold is actively growing, it releases this compound into the air around it as a byproduct of its metabolism. That same compound forms the basis of a drug called CellCept, prescribed to organ transplant recipients for a single purpose: to suppress the immune system enough that the body will not reject a foreign organ. So when someone says mold can't make you sick, or that it doesn't affect your gut, brain, or immune system, consider this. Doctors are using a version of it on purpose to suppress the immune system of transplant patients. And of course, many of those patients end up with gut symptoms. Because yes, mold affects your gut too. In an environment with active mold growth, you are breathing it in. Not at a measured therapeutic dose, but continuously, without prescription or oversight. Over time, that kind of immune disruption is part of why so many people with mold exposure end up sick. Want to hear more of my conversation with Dr. Jill? Sleep and Detox
No matter how much sleep I get… I wake up exhausted. I hear this from people on calls every week, usually right after they tell me every lab their last doctor ran came back "normal." Exhaustion that sleep never fixes is one of the loudest signs your body is dealing with something it can't clear on its own. Sleep is not just rest. It is one of your body's main detox windows. While you're in deep sleep, your brain flushes waste through the glymphatic system and your liver and other organs do a lot of their repair and clearing work. So when something is interfering with your sleep, you lose the very process that's supposed to help your body get the junk out. Now picture what happens when that something is a toxin. Mold and mycotoxins keep your nervous system on alert and your detox pathways overloaded. You sleep less deeply, you clear less, more builds up, and the cycle tightens. That is how you end up sleeping nine hours and still waking up wrecked. Mycotoxins like Ochratoxin A and Aflatoxin G2 can do real damage. Ochratoxin A is rough on the kidneys and nervous system and tracks with chronic fatigue, brain fog, headaches, and anxiety. Aflatoxin hits the liver and immune system and can drive inflammation, nausea, and appetite changes. And if you're new here, welcome. I'm Dr. Diana, aka the Detox Doc. The Detox Doc’s Report
Your immune system can't see your environment. So it reads your gut instead. I sat down with microbiologist @kiranbiome on The Detox Doc's Report, and he broke down something most people never think about. It completely reframes how I think about gut health and environmental illness. Your immune system is one of the only systems in your body that has to adapt to wherever you are. Your immune cells are born naive. They aren't preloaded with a list of friends and threats. They have to learn it, constantly, because your surroundings keep changing. But your immune system has no forward facing sensors. Nothing on your skin scanning the air for danger. So how does it decide what to attack, what to ignore, and how seriously to react? It uses your microbiome as the translator. Your gut bacteria take in information about your environment and pass it to your immune system. That is how your immune cells get educated. So when the microbiome gets disrupted, by mold, by mycotoxins, by years of environmental exposure, the messages your immune system receives get scrambled. It starts overreacting to things it should tolerate and missing things it should flag. This is part of why I see so much immune chaos in people dealing with mold and toxins. Histamine intolerance, MCAS, and new reactions to foods, smells, and chemicals that never used to be a problem. It also explains why I never start with aggressive detox. If the gut is the translator and the translator is compromised, you support it first. Every body, every exposure, and every healing path is different, so think of this as the why, not a protocol. POV: telling your doctor you have symptoms from Mold
Raise your hand if you have ever sat in a doctor’s office, brought up a real concern, and walked out feeling dismissed. Unfortunately… you are not alone. Doctors are trained to treat the symptoms they see and send you on your way. But they do not always try to get to the root cause. Like mold illness. Yes, mold illness is real. When you live or work in a water damaged building, the mycotoxins produced by mold can trigger an inflammatory response that shows up all over the body. It has been studied in peer reviewed research, and it can look like: Brain fog and memory issues Fatigue that sleep does not fix Anxiety, depression, and mood swings Histamine reactions and new food sensitivities Air hunger or shortness of breath Headaches and recurring sinus problems Joint pain and muscle aches It can also show up alongside conditions like MCAS, POTS, and CIRS, which is part of why it gets missed for so long. So you say you think you got sick from a water damaged building, and suddenly mold gets the air quotes treatment. Functional medicine focuses on getting to the root cause. I listen to ALL of your symptoms, figure out what your body is trying to tell us, and we build a plan from there. Comment PREP and I’ll send you my patient advocacy letter you can bring to your provider when talking about mold illness. #thedetoxdoc #moldillness #mold #functionalmedicine #mycotoxins
Quick ideas for a lower tox life
Life used to look very different. Food was grown closer to home. Cleaning was done with simple ingredients. Plastics barely existed. Fragrance came from actual flowers, not a lab. Then everything changed. Tens of thousands of new synthetic chemicals were introduced into our homes, our food, our water, and the products we put on our skin every day. Most were never tested for what happens when they build up in a body over a lifetime, or for what happens when they all mix together. The EPA's chemical inventory lists more than 83,000 substances in commercial use in this country. Around 42,000 of them are active in the things we use, eat, and drink right now. Only a small fraction have ever been studied for what they actually do to the human body. That alone should make us pause. Your body has a remarkable detox system. It was simply never built for synthetic compounds that did not exist a few generations ago, arriving in this volume, every single day. So what can you do about it? Living a low-tox lifestyle goes a long way, whether or not you are dealing with chronic health conditions. I'm not suggesting you overhaul your entire life overnight, but a few quick swaps can make a real difference. -Filter your water and switch to glass or stainless steel -Skip synthetic fragrance -Take your shoes off at the door -Open your windows -Eat organic when you can, especially the Dirty Dozen (The Dirty Dozen are the twelve fruits and vegetables that carry the most pesticide residue, so they are the ones worth buying organic first. This year's list: spinach, kale, collard and mustard greens, strawberries, grapes, nectarines, peaches, cherries, apples, blackberries, pears, potatoes, and blueberries.) None of this is about living in fear. It is about awareness. When you understand how much your body is managing, you can start lowering the load one simple swap at a time. Every body and every exposure is different, so think of these as a starting point, not a rulebook. Questions? Drop them below. #thedetoxdoc #functionalmedicine #lowtoxlife #toxins #moldillness
Always getting sick? This could be why!
You eat clean. You take your vitamins. You actually sleep. So why do you still catch every single thing going around? Secretory IgA is your first line of defense. It coats the lining of your gut, sinuses, and airways, binding to bacteria, viruses, toxins, and other invaders before they can take hold and trigger infection or inflammation. When sIgA runs low, that barrier weakens. You become more vulnerable to recurring infections, gut imbalances, new food sensitivities, and a more permeable gut lining, often called leaky gut. So if you keep getting sick no matter how well you take care of yourself, your immune system may not be weak. It may be under-resourced at the one place where most of your immunity actually lives. Have you had any of these symptoms? Let me know in the comments. #thedetoxdoc #functionalmedicine #functionalmed #moldillness #mold
The Detox Doc’s Report
Most people assume the air inside their home is cleaner than the air outside. It's usually the opposite. On the recent episode of The Detox Doc's Report, I sat down with building scientist and mycologist @brantley.iaq, and this is something I talk about with patients constantly. It's not just mold. Everyday life fills our homes with pollutants. Cooking, cleaning, showering, the particulate we and our pets shed, plus the chemicals coming off our building materials and furnishings. It all adds up in the air we breathe for hours every single day. What makes it worse is how we've built modern homes. We keep making them tighter and more energy efficient, which seals us in with all of it. Ventilation and HVAC systems are supposed to handle the conditioning, filtration, and fresh air exchange, but as Brantley explains, this is still so new to many contractors that it's often done wrong. So a lot of homes meant to be healthier are actually trapping poor air quality inside. This is exactly why I push people to look at their environment. You can do everything right with your health and still feel awful if the air around you is making you sick. Want the full conversation? Biotoxin Illness
Biotoxins are toxic substances produced by mold, bacteria, algae, and other organisms. When you're exposed through water-damaged buildings, contaminated food, or tick bites (or other sources!), these toxins can circulate and re-circulate in your body and trigger widespread health problems. The tricky part? Biotoxin illness doesn't look the same in everyone. For some, it shows up in the gut as IBS, chronic diarrhea, or new food sensitivities. For others, it is brain fog, anxiety, and memory slips. Plenty of people deal with joint pain, deep fatigue, or lingering respiratory issues. And often, it's a combination of symptoms across multiple systems. That is exactly why this gets missed. Most doctors treat each symptom on its own. One prescription for the gut. Another for the anxiety. Something else for the joint pain. None of it answers WHY you are sick in the first place. When we identify the root cause of your symptoms, you can actually start healing. We support your body's detox pathways, lower your toxic burden, and give your systems what they need to work the way they should. That is root cause medicine. We do not just manage symptoms. We find what is driving them, and we help you…HEAL.
Red flags for Mold Illness
Most people with mold illness go years without a diagnosis... And it's not because the symptoms aren't there. It's because the symptoms don't look like what most doctors are trained to connect to mold. Brain fog. Vision changes. Dizziness. Frequent urination. Headaches that keep coming back. These aren't random. They're your body sending signals that something in your environment may be driving what's happening inside it. Mold produces mycotoxins, and mycotoxins are systemic. They don't just hit one system and stop. They cross the blood-brain barrier, disrupt the gut, affect the bladder, and interfere with how your nervous system functions. Which is why mold illness can look like a dozen different diagnoses before anyone thinks to look at your environment. Every body responds differently, and not every symptom traces back to one cause. But if you've been chasing answers and nothing is adding up, mold is worth looking into. I want you to know there is a path forward. Getting the right testing, understanding what your body is actually responding to, and building a protocol around your specific exposures and history, that's exactly the work I do. four people one house
If only I knew then what I know now. That mold can make four people in one house sick in four completely different ways, even if not genetically predisposed. That everyone can respond differently, so it never looks like one shared cause. That it can hit the gut, the lungs, the brain, and the nerves all at once. That you don't have to see the mold, or smell it, to be getting sick from it. That is exactly why I built the Detox Doc Inner Circle. It is the space I wish my family had back then. Guidance from a doctor who knows mold and toxins. Live Q&As with me, monthly nutrition trainings, nervous system reset practices, Mold and Candida protocols you can actually use, and a community of people who understand what you are going through because they are living it too.
