The menstrual cycle is a regular, recurring process that occurs in reproductive-age females and involves hormonal changes and physiological events. It typically lasts around 28 days, although variations are common. The menstrual cycle involves the growth and maturation of an egg in the ovaries, the release of the egg during ovulation, and the preparation of the uterus for potential pregnancy. If fertilization does not occur, the uterine lining is shed during menstruation, leading to the expulsion of blood and tissue through the vagina. Hormones like estrogen and progesterone play critical roles in regulating the menstrual cycle.
