Mitochondria

Mitochondria are small, specialized structures found within cells that are often referred to as the “powerhouses” of the cell. Their primary function is to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the cell’s main source of energy. Mitochondria contain their own DNA, separate from the cell’s nucleus, and are believed to have originated from ancient bacteria through a process called endosymbiosis. Dysfunction in mitochondria can lead to various health issues, as they are vital for cellular energy production and play a role in apoptosis (programmed cell death) and other cellular processes. Defects in mitochondria can lead to mitochondrial diseases, which may affect various organs and systems in the body. Research on mitochondria is ongoing, and understanding their function and potential implications for health is an active area of scientific investigation.
