I am so good. I am so excited to have you here because you are part of our solution discussions. You are the co-owner of Sunlighten, a global leader in infrared light therapy and infrared sauna manufacturing. You have spent over two decades bringing light, hope, and happiness to people. I love that because you do feel happy when you get out of a sauna and you are around the world. Location-wise, there are 13 countries. Then you have an award-winning day spa in your headquarters in Kansas City. We are thrilled to have you here because this whole discussion we are having is about the root cause of chronic inflammatory health conditions and diseases. There is a lot of information being presented.
I think people can start to get overwhelmed by the fact that there are so many infections, so many toxins, and so many nutrient deficiencies. There are so many reasons why this is happening. Today, no pun intended, we are going to have a ray of sunlight for people because you are a solution. You help people solve these issues faster. and it does bring so much joy. We are going to jump into a discussion about infrared saunas today. This is a modality for whole-body healing. Let us jump in. What the heck is infrared? Because I know there is confusion, there is red light therapy and there is infrared sauna therapy. What is what? What makes a sauna different than a standard red light, for example?

Yes. Okay. I can answer all of those. I will start with what is infrared. Essentially, the reason our name is Sunlighten is that we are bringing sunlight into your home or harnessing the healing power of the sun, which is what infrared is. It is a natural, safe spectrum that comes from the sun and is needed for all living things. Infrared is different from what I would call a traditional heat source, such as a steam or dry sauna, in three ways. Infrared. First, as you start with the heat, the heat from traditional or steam saunas heats the air, and you get hot because the air is hot. It is a byproduct of the air being hot. Infrared heats your body directly. It is absorbed into your body, and your body elevates your core temperature and gets hot because the infrared penetrates the body. It is a different way that heat interacts with the body.
You will notice when you get inside an infrared sort of, for example, that you can breathe easily. I was just in Costa Rica, and I was experiencing all the different modalities there, and I had not been in a traditional sauna in a long time. When I stepped in, I forgot about that. It almost takes your breath away because the air is extremely hot, which is a completely different experience than infrared heat. The second difference is light. Infrared is this wonderful light energy that is needed by our bodies. Our bodies are designed to be solar panels. We are just these beautiful solar panels that need infrared light to be activated and absorbed to charge the water molecules, your water molecules, and your mitochondria. That is what activates the energy that is needed. That is very different from traditional heat.
The third is this magic spectrum of infrared. Infrared itself has three different parts to it. There are far-infrared, mid-infrared, near-infrared, and near-infrared aspects. It was specifically asked about the red light. That is where the red light lives. It lives on. We can kind of dive into each part of the spectrum if you want. But red is a part adjacent to the near-infrared category. It is one little part where infrared as a whole is the entire spectrum. But to understand the magic behind the healing power of infrared, you do need to dig into each separate spectrum because it impacts the body at very different levels.

I think it would be helpful for our audience to understand that. Then what I want to go into next, once we understand the different spectrums of light, I want to talk about why we use infrared saunas for different problems and conditions in the body and how that benefits because everyone watching has a different set of symptoms, conditions, and diagnoses. I want to make sure that this applies to everyone watching and that they find their solutions here in mid, far, and near-infrared. Let us unpack that and what they are getting when they are in sunlighten infrared sauna. Are they getting all of that, or are they getting some of that? Help us understand.

Okay. Let us start with far because that is the foundation part of the infrared spectrum. If you are it, that is what this spectrum is built on. Let us go into what is it, and how does it impacts the body. It is the farthest wavelength, and it is the coolest as well. When I say coolest, the surface temperature of the wavelength is at a cooler level. Therefore, it can be absorbed into the body in a very efficient way because the wavelengths are shorter. As that wavelength gets hotter, it gets harder to get into the body.
How does far infrared impact the body, and what are the benefits? It is absorbed into the body. It increases your core temperature, impacts your water molecules, and vibrates your water molecules. That is going to help increase circulation and increase oxygenation in the brain. It is going to help boost the immune system. It is going to help by increasing your core temperature and detoxifying the body. We can talk deeper into that in a minute about some of the studies regarding detoxification. But that is a huge benefit of infrared. The far also helps with relaxation and stress reduction, as well as weight loss.

We are done. That is it. Everybody needs this. That is right. It is a short relaxation, stress reduction, and oxygenation, healing. Okay. What else do I need to say? Thank you, Connie. It is fantastic. Keep going. There’s more?

I know, the good news is there is more. So mid is hotter the wavelength is shorter. That is about muscle recovery and helping to reduce pain and inflammation at the joint and tissue level. It also aids in the benefits of weight loss with the far infrared and the near infrared. so the near infrared helps find the air in two ways. One is the invisible part, and that is delivered by LEDs, and this wavelength is so powerful. It is magical with how it works on your skin. It transforms your skin, is great for wound healing and inflammation, increases collagen, and helps with anti-aging and reducing inflammation. Those are some of the benefits of near that can also help with brain health. The red light has similar benefits. The difference, and here is a key thing, Laura. Because there is so much confusion between red light and near-infrared and red light and far-infrared.

The only difference between red light and near-infrared, and keep in mind, is that it is a very small, specific part of the infrared spectrum. It is not the whole thing. It has one little important part and two valuable parts but it is one part of it. The difference between red and near and the invisible part is the level of penetration into the skin. Near-infrared goes the deepest; red does not go as deep. The reason we have added red to our mPulse Smart Sauna is because there is a synergistic effect of both near and red together. When they work together they have a more powerful effect on the cells. That is the spectrum at large; the benefits of red. We do not talk about it, but they are very similar to the benefits of near, as far as skin and brain health; it just does not go as deep.

Okay. Now we have defined mid, near, and far infrared. When you are in the Sunlighten sauna, you are exposed to all spectrums.

Okay, great question. You can, or you can do just a foundational far. Okay, so let us talk through that for a second to make sure that is super clear. We will start with well; we will start with having just gone through the entire spectrum, so we will start with mpulse Smart Sauna. Let me also ask you this. Does anybody else on the market do this, or is this a super unique thing to Sunlighten?

It is unique. It is patented. We patented a couple of the patents that normally do not even go into patents. But we are on this topic. The patents that are we have a lot over 20 patents. The two that are significant to the people who are listening because they provide peace of mind are the highest absorption level into the body, which is the highest amount of far infrared delivered into the body. We have the patent on the highest 70, and then the second is two or more wavelengths and one patent. We have that patent as well. You are protected. It is a big purchase.
The reason I mentioned is that you do not. I hate that feeling of when you get something and are super excited about it, and then you see something else, and you are, no, is that better than what I just got? I cannot go further at this point. Goals. But yes, some people think that is their thing. They want to be hot, and they want to be in there pouring sweat in 5 seconds.

Now, Sauna can support anti-aging, and we are not just talking about beautiful skin; we are talking about internal anti-aging, slowing down the clock, keeping our bodies strong, and going long into our lives. It can help with sleep. It can help with your heart health. It can help with muscle recovery. This is something near and dear to me. With the heavy-weight lifting workouts that I do, it can help with mental health concerns like anxiety or depression. We have a lot of discussions in my community about solving chronic infections, parasites, bacteria, viruses, and toxins. We have talked a little bit about how this is supportive of detox and getting toxins out of the body. We have lots of talks at this summit about all the different toxins. Let us just unpack some of those things. I will just let you pick where you want to go and just drop pearls of wisdom on us.
Connie Zack
Sure. The first pearl that I would drop is regarding inflammation. Inflammation is the number-one cause of aging. Inflammation, inflame- aging, as some people will call it. The infrared spectrum is so powerful at reducing inflammation in different parts of the body, and each wavelength penetrates and affects the body differently. It is whole when you put the entire spectrum together as in Impulse; it is whole-body anti-aging. That is how I would look at it, and I would unpack it separately from that in the spirit of just looking at the anti-aging piece, so on far infrared, several different ways.
First of all, one of my favorite data points is that there is a study where far infrared has a potent anti-inflammatory effect because it induces a gene that regulates inflammation in the body. We do not have to go into the specific gene. But it is HO-1 if you want to do more research. But that gene helps to regulate inflammation and far infrared induces that in powerful genes. That helps to fight aging in that way.
Also, by increasing your core temperature and boosting the immune system, you are getting back stronger mitochondria in your body, and you are helping to fight off all of the toxins and inflammation that is inside your body that slow down and increase aging. That is far infrared itself. The gene and the pain relief at the core are important. Med helps reduce inflammation in the joints and tissues, so it is excellent. A lot of athletes are now using it for muscle recovery so that it can speed up their time to get back into their sport. Professional athletes, when they are down, need time and money, and they need to get back up to speed fast.

Connie, I am telling you now that I am not a professional athlete, but I do some heavy workouts in a gym where professional athletes do workouts. It is kind of interesting. NFL players and professional baseball players are there, and then normal grandmas are there. Moms and people like me who hate to work out, but I need to do it. I do not have to be a professional athlete to be in serious hamstring and glute pain when I get done with my workout. This helps with recovery. Trust me if you are anything like me and you love to work out, and hurts, makes it less painful.
Connie Zack
It does. It helps your hamstring. The other thing is that this is a great segue way to near-infrared because this was one of my favorite personal stories. I will make it short, but it was when I was training for a marathon recently and my feet, my knees, and my neck, after I would run, would just, literally, feel like pins and needles, almost glass, where you just could not move after a run. I would hobble down because my sauna is downstairs in my basement. I would hobble down the stairs. I could barely even get in. Then I would lie down on my bench. I put my feet and my knees up next to the near-infrared LEDs.
I, Laura, could instantly feel that those pins were there all of a sudden. Where I was, you could feel the movement, and everything started to just kind of calm down, and everything that was so angry before started to chill. When I was finished, I always did the inflammation and pain relief. Sorry, that is the name of the program—the pain relief program—when I was training, and then after I finished the pain relief program, I literally could walk it up the stairs. I would not go for another run that day, but I could. Yes, so near-infrared. Back to the near-infrared. What it does, which I just use as a story because I use it personally, is that it helps at the surface level with inflammation. It helps those hard areas of the knees, feet, and back of the neck. It also helps the skin with anti-aging. I love, love, love how you said that anti-aging is not just about the skin and beauty. It is on the inside. When you feel better and are healthier from the inside out, you are going to look better because you feel better. That is why people have that glow: they feel better and are healthier from the inside out.

Well, here is what I have to say, Connie. Anti-aging is an inside game, as the multitrillion-dollar anti-aging industry will make you believe it is about putting a potion on your skin. If your insides are not supported, you will never just support this outer layer and have it look youthful. It has to come from the inside. Then all that stuff you put on will work better. You might get a result if you are working on the inside.
Connie Zack
Exactly. That is exactly right. Near-infrared is an excellent way to see near-infrared, the invisible, as well as red light. If you combine the two, you are hitting the body at two different levels. You are hitting the skin at two different levels, but they have a potent anti-inflammatory effect on the skin. They help, as I said earlier, boost collagen and elastin, which helps the skin have a more youthful appearance. Fine lines and wrinkles.

Your teenager has acne, got there? Yes, exactly. Can we talk about it, I would love to talk. I want to make sure we talk about detox, but I want to get to mental health now. In my programs, many people that we support in our community, in addition to low energy, brain fogginess, and digestive issues, also experience heightened anxiety or maybe some depression, not having joy in the things that used to bring them joy.
There is some benefit to infrared saunas in supporting neurotransmitter production and maintaining balance in the body. You call it happiness or experience for a reason. Could you explain how this can support people as they solve the root causes of what is creating that imbalance in their neurotransmitters and their brain-gut pathway? There is so much that causes this mood instability. How can people benefit from this?
Connie Zack
There is a study done by Dr. Rosen and the University of Wisconsin on depression, and essentially what he did was he had people go through it in Germany and know the whole body hypothermia experience, and it was severely depressed patients who were immersed in this of the solo. If you can kind of picture a piece of equipment that was lying down in a chamber they were in, it was using infrared, and it increased their core temperature. When it increased their core temperature, they were able to change, unlock the switch, and thermo-regulate their bodies so that their bodies could heat up and then naturally cool down.
What he found was that after only one session, there were significant benefits to their depression symptoms for up to six weeks. One session and depression symptoms were relieved, which is significant. The key, he believes, is that people who have severe depression are not able to naturally heat their bodies and cool them down. It also affects the way they sleep. One of the benefits that we have found with our asanas is that they help people significantly sleep better, and when your body can naturally cool itself down so that you can change your hormone levels and kind of get to that circadian rhythm, you can sleep more efficiently and have a deeper, more restful sleep. Then, when you wake up, you have more energy to go about your day. That was what far infrared was, and that was just one session. There are many studies, but this is one of my favorites because it is so powerful and it lasted so long.

What comes to mind is that when you are getting into a deep sleep and you are in a parasympathetic state of healing, restoring, and repairing, you are also in a state of making mirror transmitters, making serotonin, making dopamine, and making the things that your body needs to feel good. It is all directly related. Can you talk about detox? We have a lot of talks at this summit about metals, environmental toxins, mold, toxins, all the toxins that are coming from air and water from our body products, and cleaning products. We are assaulted with toxins day in and day out. How does sauna support getting those toxins out of the deep into cellular and extracellular spaces—we are talking beyond the gut? We are talking about toxins being packed into our bodies in hidden places, and we need to get them out.
Connie Zack
Yes, that is one of the most important benefits that Sunlighten and its products provide, for sure. for sure, because so many things are connected to having a high toxic burden in your body. You do not even know it is there. It affects your energy level. It affects your appetite, and it affects your skin. It affects your attitude and affects so many things. There is a study again; another study was called the Blood Urine Sweat Study by the U.S. It examines the toxins in your body and the removal of them via blood, urine, or sweat. One of the interesting data points was the power of sweat to remove toxins. For example, they measured a lot of the heavy metals. They measured rad, cadmium, mercury, and aluminum and found that there were more of the toxins reported through sweat than in your blood, urine, and mercury. specifically, 15% of the participants had no detectable levels of mercury in their blood or urine. But when they measured it in the sweat, 100% of those 15% had mercury in their sweat.

This is something we tell people all the time, just because we do not see it. Your urine test, even though we have. When we do a toxin test, what I do is slowly provoke people over some time before they do it, instead of a fast provoke. We do a slow, easy provoke that also helps them feel better, boosts energy, helps them sleep, etc. We oftentimes do not see many metals in a urine test. I am constantly telling them that it does not mean they are not there. Trust me, they are being rained on us. Aluminum is pervasive. It is everywhere. It is in your kitchen; it is in the food that you are eating in restaurants and that you are buying in the store. It is in your body products. It is in so many places that it is not possible for aluminum to not come out of your body; it is not there. Same with Mercury. It is everywhere. I am so glad you said this because just because we do not see it on a test does not mean it is not there. Your body hasn’t safely released it yet. Your body has not had a way to get it out yet.
Connie Zack
Yes. It is important to get it out through sweat in an infrared sauna, and because you are heating your core temperature, you are doing it in an enjoyable environment. You will stay in there. which is key because to get better, you need to be in there and let the infrared be absorbed into your body, let it make all of those significant changes, and let the sweat do its thing and pull out a lot of those harmful materials that are trapped inside your body. The more that you do it, the more you are going to pull it out and the health you are going to feel. That is why so many times people say, I feel so much better. I have so much more energy when I get out of the Sunlighten, and, for example, I feel lighter. That is a common comment.
Well, you are removing a lot of the stuff that is heavy, and it is weighing your body down. That is why you are fatigued, and that is why you do not feel great. That is why you have brain fog and you do not; my head never feels clearer than probably a minute. I do not know, 15ish when I am inside, because my head just starts. I get that it gets clear, and then I get creative, and it is just wonderful because we can get bogged down with brain fog or just overload. We are taking in so much information, and I just cannot even imagine what our brains would look like if we were to take an inside camera with all of the thoughts and information in there. Infrared helps, not just get the oxygen going, get the flow going, and get the sweat removed. The toxins are removed.

We are going to switch because I want to talk about sauna habits, and you have given us a great segue. But I want to just recap: what we have established is very important for healing. The process is number one: oxygenation of the cells. You must have oxygen for healing. There are two critical things. There are lots of critical things, but there are two very critical things. You must have oxygen, and this supports oxygenation. You must get into a parasympathetic healing state.
If you are sympathetic all the time, you are going to be on a never-ending hamster wheel trying to solve this. You must. I run into people all the time who say, Just give me the supplements, just give me the pills, just give me the food I need to eat. However, they are not willing to do the parasympathetic work. You must get off; you are levitating all the time. You are in this fight or flight. We must get that down for you to be able to sleep. For you. I cannot. I cannot supplement your way to sleep if you are still in a sympathetic state. Two very important things that must happen for healing.
Now, we started talking about how you feel so good at the 15-minute mark. I want to talk about sauna habits. Just from my perspective, I am all about habit stacking. What can I do? I do three things at once. How can I fit my body in multiple ways? You can do things like this in the sauna. I want to take my time in the sauna to catch up on different things. I am usually reading three books at a time, usually some kind of health book. I am studying something. I am usually learning something about self-development or how to do something in my business. I usually read a novel for fun or something; there are always three things, and then there are podcasts that I want to listen to, and there is scripture I want to read, and there are all these things. Then some ideas come to you. You said you start getting ideas at the 15-minute mark so you can start, you can have a journal, and they are. I do not want to forget this or write it down. What are some habits you can create in your routine, in your life, and around using a sauna?

Yes, well, I am just going to build on your love for habit stacking. It is one of mine as well. That is one of my favorite things about using my Sunlighten sauna: I can accomplish 2 to 3 other important lifestyle ads while I am inside an important one. There are not a lot of modalities for what you can do. I have been doing more yoga, and I love it. But while you are doing yoga, you are focused on it, and it is wonderful and awesome, but it is hard to do it multiple times now. You can do a little bit of yoga inside the sauna, and there you go. There is yoga and sauna together.

Yes. I always feel fine when the first thing I do is do my neck stretches, and that is because when you get in there, you can feel your shoulders start to lower, and you can feel your body start to receive that healing energy. The light energy and the heat energy are all crucial for our bodies to be as healthy as possible. As far as great habits go, the first and most important is to listen to your body. I cannot stress that enough. Your body knows the length of time. If you are in there, and especially if you have a lot of toxins in your body, you may not want to stay in there very long. Start slow, work up for 10 to 15 minutes, and see how your body responds. Also, the second tip, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate, is so important to make sure you drink plenty of water. Also, pay attention to your electrolytes. You can probably speak to that better than I can as far as some of the additional things that people should take and be aware of,?

Yes, I would also say, Let me just sprinkle purified water. Yes. Just any water. You are detoxing. You do not need to be retoxing your body while you are simultaneously detoxing. purified water and we are not talking about fridge filters, so do not contact me if you need to know more about purifying water. It is an important thing. But yes, electrolytes. I used to see plasma and, yes, very clean seawater. I put that into my water every day. I put minerals in liquids. There are several companies where you can get great liquid minerals, and then it is easy to just put a pinch of Himalayan salt into your water, too. so easy, too easy thing to do.

Yes. That is important. Then make sure that, when you are in there, you are your present. You talked about getting into the parasympathetic. You are just paying attention to your body and doing deep breathing. You can do different things every time. You do not have to do the same thing. Sometimes I go in there, and I am focusing on breathwork. I am just focusing on that while I am in the sun, or sometimes it is meditation, sometimes it is getting caught up in podcasts, and also just doing work while I am in there, which is great because I also receive it differently. I do believe that a lot of that is due to the different wavelengths because near-infrared and red light work with a brain in a different cognitive way.
You have all these different healing energies working with your body—your whole body—while you are in there. It is nice to be able to do something else because you get the benefit of the act, the activity, and the activation of your cells while you are there. Those are some of the tips. Personally, everybody always asks me, and when I do it, I go to the sauna in the morning. That is my personal preference. I heard stories of people doing it in the evening, and they are fine too, to then shower and go to sleep. I like it in the morning. I just want to stack my exercise sonics. I want to elevate my core temperature, keep the sweat going, and keep my body at a cardiovascularly active level for as long as possible.
