Menopause is the point 12 consecutive months after your last menstrual period — a year after your final period — when ovarian hormone production has largely ceased and the monthly cycle ends. The median age is about 51–52, but perimenopause can begin up to ten years earlier (sometimes in the mid‑ to late‑30s); cycle changes such as irregular timing, skipped periods, or a >7‑day variation often mark entry to the transition, and 60 days of amenorrhea signals the late transition. During perimenopause progesterone often falls first (which can cause anxiety and insomnia), and loss of ovarian estradiol leads to hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness and later skin thinning; afterward most remaining hormones come from fat cells and the adrenal glands. Common symptoms include sleep disturbance, mood swings, changes in energy and libido, acne or hair changes, and variable bleeding patterns (heavier or lighter). Some women experience a gradual mellowing and feel better after menopause, but earlier onset usually means a longer, potentially more symptomatic transition.
