Menopause is the point defined as 12 consecutive months after your last menstrual period; the median age is about 51–52, though the transition (perimenopause) can begin a decade earlier. During perimenopause you’ll often see irregular cycles (a >7‑day change signals the transition; 60+ days of amenorrhea marks the late transition) and symptoms from fluctuating hormones. Common symptoms include hot flashes and night sweats (often near the final transition), sleep disturbance, mood changes, anxiety/insomnia (often linked to early progesterone decline), changes in libido, and later signs of low estrogen such as vaginal dryness and thinning, and drier skin. Ovarian production of estradiol and progesterone winds down, so after menopause most remaining sex hormones come from fat cells and the adrenal glands, which is why body composition, stress/adrenal reserve, and weight influence how women feel. Many women’s symptoms mellow after menopause, but others need targeted care (lifestyle, hormonal or nonhormonal treatments) to manage persistent symptoms.
