Menopause is the point defined as 12 consecutive months after your last menstrual period, when ovarian production of estradiol and progesterone has essentially stopped. It most commonly occurs around age 51–52, but the transition (perimenopause) can begin many years earlier — sometimes in the mid‑ to late‑30s or around the late 40s. Common signs during perimenopause and menopause include irregular or skipped cycles, hot flashes and night sweats (typically near the transition), mood changes, sleep disturbance, decreased libido, and later vaginal dryness and thinning of skin. Biologically, progesterone often falls first as anovulatory cycles appear, estrogen fluctuates and then declines, and remaining hormones come largely from fat cells and the adrenal glands; cortisol changes with stress can worsen mood, energy, and blood sugar. Clinically, a change of more than seven days in cycle length can mark entry into the transition, and 60 days or more without bleeding indicates the late transition — from which most women will reach their final period within about four years.
